•Stride Ahead can be regarded as a follow on from Toe by Toe

• Meant for older students

•Aims to make decoding process automatic without requiring concentrated mental effort.

•Students' comprehension improves as they can turn all their attention to the meaning of the text in front of them.

“A good reader is only conscious of meaning. The print on the page is all but invisible”

Prof. Diane McGuinness

•Toe by Toe insists that the student is dragged back to check the absolute basics (i.e. the letter sounds)

•Older students sometimes find this ‘demeaning’.

•May find you are hitting 'resistance' from Day One.

Stride Ahead

•Stride Ahead – however - assumes that a few decoding skills are already in place.

•Thus 'real reading' comes much sooner in the programme.

•Teenage boys - especially - really start to enjoy the series of timed 'challenges' at the heart of the Stride Ahead method.

•The scheme is achieving astonishing results with older, disheartened students.

•Another great advantage of Stride Ahead is that the course is much shorter.

•With daily input of 30 minutes, it's perfectly possible to finish in a couple of months.

•Children who have reached the age of 11+ need to have their reading problems 'sorted' ASAP in order to bring their school misery to an end.

Sentences for Exercises 41 and 42

Section Two

My cousin Phyllis trained to be a physiotherapist but found the sheer physical demands

of the job too much of a strain. She had studied psychology at college and briefly

considered training to become a psychologist or even a psychiatrist. The thought of

being attacked by psychotic patients soon put her off the idea. One day she was having

her palms read by an old gypsy lady who told her that she had phenomenal psychic

powers. As a result she invested in a crystal ball and joined a circus.
