Street Safety Tips for Kids and Teens We encourage parents & kids who are traveling without adults to talk about how to be safe on Brooklyn’s streets. Here are a few simple tips: Navigating the streets safely: Walk with a group or friend Avoid crowds of strangers or teens (cross to the other side of the street) Take different routes to and from school (don’t always go the exact same way) Keep your cell phone or iPod out of view as you walk Avoid walking near vans with tinted windows Don’t make eye contact with strangers With your parents, identify some business, churches, etc along your route, that are places you can stop if you feel uncomfortable Call 911 in case of an emergency If you get approached by someone who looks threatening: Scream Yell something Keep moving Stay out in the open, never run down a dark street Go into a store Get a description of the offenders Call 911 How to approach a NYC Police Officer: Get to know your school safety officers Say hello. Always address a police officer politely and with respect. Never have your hands in your pocket when you approach a police officer Never put your hands on a police officer Follow instructions from a police officer, and ask questions if you don’t understand.
