SECTION 9 DECORATIVE STREET LIGHTING STANDARDS

9.1 Street Lighting  

Decorative street lighting is required on all public and private streets, public and private parking lots and along all shared use paths. Any variation from this requirement must have approval of the Public Works Director. Street lights shall be installed concurrently with underground utilities. Street lighting will be decorative in character, unless otherwise approved by the City Council. All decorative street lights must be compliant with the City's Outdoor Lighting Standards (Section 11-3-25 of the Whitefish City Code). Applicable lighting standard details 47a thru 47m must be included with lighting plans. Lighting plans shall include features such as, but not limited to, service assembly, photo control, layout of poles, conduits and pull boxes, conduit and wire sizes, fuses, etc.

 

9.1.1 Residential – Streets, Parking Lots & Shared Use Paths

9.1.5 Bollard – Share Use Paths

9.2 Pull Boxes

Pull boxes shall be installed flush with finished grade. To promote drainage and stability, all pull boxes shall receive a 6-inch deep foundation section of clean 3/8” minus aggregate chips extending 3-inches past the base of the box (See SD-47i). Pull boxes shall be placed at all locations where conduit layouts would result in 45-degree angles, except for street light base and service assembly pad sweeps. Pull boxes shall be installed at the ends of all conduit runs.

9.3 Conduits, Wiring and Fuses

All conduits shall be Schedule 40 PVC. Minimum conduit size is 1 ¼”. Minimum conduit bury depth is 1’-8”. Conduit runs from power source to service assembly shall be 3” (See SD-47m). All conduit work shall be inspected by a licensed electrician prior to burial. When present, conduits shall be placed 6” behind curbs (See SD-47j). Conduits shall be sealed from dirt, debris and rodents (dux seal, perma seal, etc.) when entering and existing light bases and pull boxes. Pull box splices shall be made watertight.

1) Keep linear footage of 1 ¼” conduit to 2,000’ maximum with #8 & #6 wire sizes. (measuring along main conduit run)

2) For conduit runs over 2,000’, use 2” conduit. 3) For conduit runs with #4 wire size, use 2” conduit. 4) For conduit runs with more than 1 circuit, use 2” conduit.

Each luminaire shall have two (2) watertight break away fuse holders with dual element midget fuses.

9.4 Pole Spacing, Offset & Installation

Poles shall be installed plumb and level. Anchor bolts and nuts shall be corrosion resistant and installed with an anti-seize compound on threads. Decorative lights shall be spaced 150 to 180 feet along residential streets. The light location should alternate from side to side of street. Lights shall be placed a minimum of 3 feet from back of curb.

9.5 Service Assemblies

Service assemblies shall be 100 Amp, 120/240 Volt, 1 Phase. Service assemblies shall be bolted to a mounting base (Milbank CP-16DMNT-CALT, or approved equal) that is bolted

bolt anchors fixed in a reinforced concrete pad (See SD-47l). Anchor bolts and nuts shall be corrosion resistant and installed with an anti-seize compound on threads. Use the following, or approved equal, service assembly commercial pedestals:

All service assemblies shall be controlled by a photo control (See SD-47k). Photo control device shall be Tork #2107, or approved equal.

9.6 Inspections

Call for electrical conduit rough-in inspection before covering conduits. Call for electrical final inspection and compete working test before project sign-off. Project will not be complete until work test is finalized.

9.7 Product Sheets & Isometric Footprint Exhibit

Product sheets for preapproved products can be obtained by contacting the Public Works Department (406-863-2460). Included are pull boxes, commercial pedestals, mounting base and photo control product sheets. Type 3 Residential Street Light Isometric Footprint Exhibit can also be provided by the Public Work Department upon request.

Commercial PedestalsCP3B “ML” Main Load Center Series

The Milbank Main Load Center Commercial Pedestals are designed to handle the vast majority of all requirements in a standard, stocked configuration.

• No waiting or extra charge• Units feature a load center with a plug-on, back-fed main

breaker• Load center has 16 positions for the 100 amp pedestals and

24 circuits for the 200 amp pedestals• Both sizes include sub-feed lugs to allow feeding an external

These units include everything required for remote site service:• Type 3R construction• Expandable: load centers allow for future expansion without

costly modifications• All units feature 200 amp meter socket with optional field-

installable fifth terminal kit available• Optional mounting base can be embedded in concrete for

fast, easy installation• Separate sealable and lockable utility termination section• Separate sealable and lockable metering section with the

option of either a ring-type socket with test/bypass blocks (conforms to EUSERC 308) or a heavy duty ringless socket with lever bypass

• A separate sealable and lockable customer section with a load center for “always on” loads that includes:

• Main circuit breaker• 20 (200 or 125 amp models) or 14 (100 amp models)

SENSOR: Conformal coated cadmium sulphide photocell resists effects of moisture and airborne contaminants. Photocell responds to the light spectrum near to that of a human eye.

OPERATION: Delay of up to two minutes to prevent false switching due to light from passing vehicles, lightning, etc.
