WELCOME TO OUR fabulous ISLANDenjoy your visit!

...thanks for coming

www.gabriolaisland.org

We golfWe catch fishWe go to meetings andmusical events and live theatreand poetry readings and gallery openings, and even the movies. We gather oysters and mussels and dig for clams, we need a license for this too and we always check for red tide closures to make sure they’re safe to eat.We farm and we have organic, inspected beef, lamb and chicken and all kinds of fruits and vegetables and eggs and some of it’s available at the Saturday Farmer’s Market at the AGI Hall.

We gardenOur rain shadow status gives us a gentle climate in which to grow exotic flow-ers and shrubs and trees not usually expected to thrive at our latitude. It also means we get less rain then Vancouver, which is a good thing.

We volunteerGabriola is a very active and caring community and a glance at events in the local newspapers just hints at the scope of activities. We have organizations of every stripe like the Rollo Seniors Centre, The Commons and People for a Healthy Community, the Women’s Institute, AGI Hall, The Community Hall, GIRO, the Power Squadron, the Ambulance Society, The Gabriola Health Care Foundation and the local Yacht Club... and those are just a few of them.

We walk...... and walk even more now with two new parks. We are aware that the parks do not have the trails well marked yet and we could get lost or wander onto private land by mistake. We do respect private land and take care not to trespass. The GaLTT Trail Map is available for a $1 donation and will worth having. Cell phones don’t always work so we are sure to let someone know when we go off for hike in any of our parks. In winter, or if it has been raining, we need rubber boots on some of the trails.

We have a library...... and we have a used bookstore at Folklife Village and a “new” bookstore at the south end, at Page’s Resort & Marina. We read a lot of books as the ferry wait does create an unending demand for reading material of all kinds. We publish two newspapers weekly, the Gabriola Sounder and the Flying Shingle. We have many award winning writers and poets and we were the eponymous subject of a 1970 book by Malcolm Lowry, October Ferry to Gabriola.

We own pets...... like horses and many dogs and cats lovingly cared for. And there are deer, peacocks, turkeys, barred owls and assorted other critters like sea otters and raccoons. Wonderful birds (eagles and hummingbirds and everything in between). And we have a veterinarian and Cats Alive and GROWLS, a wildlife rescue group. And even Gabriolans who band hummingbirds. There are no bears or cougars or other predators so hiking is very safe.

We bicycleGabriola Island was made for cyclists! A narrow, paved road (you really need to cycle single file) encircles the island. You can head south on scenic South Rd. and experience the thrill of Brickyard Hill which starts just past the Gabriola Greenhouse... or ... take North Rd. which takes you through the wooded, farm-ing area first. According to some local cyclists the North Rd. route is easiest and of medium difficulty. You can always push your bike up the 18% grade of Brickyard Hill. Be sure to check out the trails map at the Mid-Island Co-op created just for cyclists. And many of the hiking trails in the GaLTT trail map (707 acre park especially) are great for cycling too!

What don’t we have...1. A hospital (but we can get you to one in Nanaimo in the middle of the

night) and we do have doctors on call and an ambulance; no middle school or high school (they go to Nanaimo); no more than 3 street lights (we can see the stars); and not a lot of potable water. After all, our island is a big sandstone rock. We are very careful with out water.

2. A municipal government. Just an interesting mixture of Islands Trust and the Nanaimo Regional District and the local Fire Improvement District.

3. Good cell phone service, it just depends on where you are. But then, does it really matter when you come for a visit? It’s just part of island life.

Do we like it here?Absolutely. We get the best of laid-back country living, most of the services we need without leaving Gabriola and the convenience of a world class city like Vancouver just 20 minutes away by plane, a few hours by ferry.

Gabriola Island...... is about 14 km long by 4.5 km wide with an estimated 45 km of coastline. With over 30 public beach access points. We have more places to dip our toes in the salt water than any other Gulf Island.

We have peopleGabriola Island is home to slightly fewer than 5000 people: up to 10,000 in the summer months. The average age of a Gabriolan is about 52.9. Our residents are well educated with 66% having schooling beyond grade twelve. We have more artists and musicians per capita than the rest of BC: some are world fa-mous like Juno Award winner, Gary Fjellgaard. One resident holds the worlds bicycle speed record and another received international kudos for his expertise in violin bow making. Plus we have the only full-time wooden boat school in Canada.

We Beach-combWhen we go to the beach, we watch our step: while many of our public beach accesses are level, sandy and easy for all people, some can be quite steep, rocky and very adventurous! Some have steps built to make it easier to reach the water; just remember the steps can be slippery when wet. Every beach has its own particular charm and interest. The sandstone formations make for very interesting tidal pools and photo ops... but do be kind to the little critters you find in the pools and under rocks (don’t touch with sun-screeny hands). Be a responsible visitor to the ocean environment and leave things and critters the way you found them. Beach fires are not permitted during fire season (usually April 1 to October 15). You need written permission from the Fire Chief ’s of-fice 250.247.9677, but it’s a good idea to call anyway.

Did you know? All beaches are open to the public up to the high tide line. You are not trespass-ing, so enjoy the beach. We check the tide tables (in the Gabriola Sounder) before we go and take a watch to check the time because we can get caught by the incoming tide, especially if the beach is gently sloping.

We have deer!

Our Visitor Centre is made possible by the members of the Gabriola Island Chamber of Commerce, BC Tourism and our many valued tourism counsellors.

Leaving Gabriola? Waiting in line for the next ferry is a necessary part of our island way of life. Over the years the locals have developed a routine that

can be very confusing to our visitors.a) No one parks in the lineup where it’s too sunny. Sometimes we stop so we

can wait in the shade;b) The space on the curve is at too great a slope for comfortable waiting, so we

park where it’s flat. And that leaves spaces in the lineup to confuse you and tempt you to back in. But don’t do it, you’ll get asked to move;

c) Large trucks and trailers will park on North Rd. just above Taylor Bay Rd. After parking there, they will notify the last in line, that they will enter the loading lineup right after them.

A few other tips for the ferry traveler1. If you must make connections or you have an appointment, arrive early and

be prepared to wait. Bring a book. Have a snooze. Walk the dog. Smell the cedar trees. Enjoy the view. Or take an earlier ferry.

2. Cash is nice if you want to purchase a cold drink or snack from the Skol Pub.3. Patience is good. Ferries don’t always run on time. You get used to that when

you live here.4. The ambulance always takes precedence. Sometimes the ferry is held for the

ambulance, then it’s late arriving at Nanaimo harbour. 5. The Gabriola Home Support Society van is given loading precedence to

make it easier on the older folks.

Ferry Information

If you plan to travel back and forth on

the ferry you’ll want to purchase a BC Ferries Experience™Card. It is an electronic swipe card that can be loaded with money at the terminal or online and be used to pay for ferry travel. It gives you reduced (commuter) fares wherever they’re available.

However there is a catch: you have to put at least $40 (passenger) and $75 (vehicle) into the card to get started but it does save you money in the long run.

When you’re driving around, especially early morning or at dusk, be very alert for deer browsing along the road. They sometimes

decide to cross the road when you least expect it and while they’re smart enough to find our gardens at their most succulent, they

certainly don’t pay any attention to the deer crossing signs. So do drive carefully.

Paradise Island Alpacas started in 2005, with just two alpacas. Now you’ll find 35+ alpacas,

llamas and chickens. An old barn is now a farm shoppe, which sells alpaca products (yarn, clothing), free-range eggs and items from local artists. Ask for a tour, walk an alpaca, learn

all about spinning, carding and shearing. Great fun for kids of all ages, and educational too!

We have an Alpaca Farm too!
