The Coach House Streamcross, Claverham, BS49 4QD
DESCRIPTION Formally part of neighbouring Claverham House, a fine Grade II listed
manor with origins dating back to 1744 that was extensively improved
and remodelled in the Victorian Era, 'The Coach House' is now an
equally impressive and substantial property in its own right.
Approached via a private driveway that parts two glorious formal lawns, 'The Coach House' has an unusual and striking façade which is
built of local stone, above which sits a warm clay tiled roof. The east
elevation of the property evokes a slightly Tuscan/Mediterranean
appeal whereas the south wing of the property is far more traditional
and reminiscent of an old Somerset Long House. The two contrasting
wings of the property blend effortlessly and seamlessly to create what
is a wonderfully balanced and flexible family home. Between the two
L-shaped elevations of the coach house sits a magnificent courtyard terrace which features an exceptional stone pond and fountain with a
gorgeous back drop of the original stone walls of the Manor House
and its handsome dove cote resting in one corner, coupled with a
stunning Victorian brick garden wall which separates the courtyard
from its many useful outbuildings.
Internally the property is unique and wonderful in its design and
blends traditional period styled rooms with dramatic open plan living spaces that simply ooze character and individuality, ideal for
entertaining. In brief, the accommodation comprises of five bedrooms
which are arranged over the two floors and could be increased or
decreased as desired. The five bedrooms are served by two
bathrooms with the master bedroom enjoying a superb and spacious
en-suite. There is also a further utility/wash room on the first floor.
From the master bedroom a simply magnificent Minstrels gallery
provides an additional study/office which overlooks the living space below which features a quite magnificent Minster stone staircase. The
vaulted exposed wooden ceiling above the gallery creates a dramatic
and ecclesiastical feature which adds even more intrigue to the
property.
On the ground floor the accommodation is split into two defined
wings with the original part of the house enjoying a large and
welcoming sitting room with a stunning aspect onto the inner courtyard and a wonderful feature stone wall with inset open fire and
traditional cast chimney hood over, along with a ground floor
bedroom/craft room, wash room and WC. The original staircase rises
to the first floor rooms and a storm porch gives access out to the rear
of the property and to a further parking area for the house along with
two former stables and car port. Linking the two sections of the
building is an impressive entrance hallway with a stone tiled floor and access to a further WC.
From the entrance hallway, magnificent solid wood wedding doors
lead into the newer section of the property which by contrast features
a wonderful open plan living/kitchen/dining area along with a large
and useful utility/pantry and a separate study/library. This expansive area is ideally suited for family life and would provide excellent
entertaining space for social occasions or large gatherings and flows
beautifully onto the inner courtyard garden. This truly striking room
features the aforementioned Minstrel's gallery sitting above it with an
open stone fireplace to the gabled end with a unique oak wooden
mantel in the form of brick tiles. The unique features do not end there,
with a twisted wooden handrail cut from a single piece of oak rising to
the Minstrel’s gallery above the Minster stone steps. Beyond the vaulted gallery of the living space a door leads to a further reception
room which is currently a library/office and features a lovely dual
aspect and feels quite separate from the main body of the home
offering the essential peace and quiet required to study and research.
By far one of the most fabulous features of The Coach House is the
extensive and beautifully maintained gardens and terraces that grace
this wonderful property. The inner courtyard is truly a space of great beauty with its majestic stone pond and fountain rising above a
myriad of stone reams that cross through the large terrace. The
enchanting back drop of the original stone wall of 'Claverham House'
along with its dove cote coupled with the superb planted borders
and rich variety of flora and fauna make this courtyard a serene and
private space from which to entertain or simply enjoy its most
beautiful west-facing setting. Beyond the courtyard a wrought iron
gate flanked by a stunning Victorian brick wall opens through to an area which houses several incredibly useful outbuildings and garden
stores and a number of beautiful flower gardens and kitchen garden.
As you move around towards the east of the house you are greeted
by a sweeping lawn that projects away from the barn towards the
entrance driveway and is flanked by a tall mature hedgerow giving
exceptional privacy. On the opposite side of the entrance driveway is
a further glorious formal lawn which enjoys mature well planted
borders and is the perfect space to enjoy a game of lawn boules or host a garden party.
The coach house has the unusual benefit of being approached via
two separate driveways. The original access to the house is via the
courtyard for the main manor house which provides access to a
covered car port, parking for approximately four vehicles and two
stables/workshops for storage. The second, which is a private
driveway sweeps through the formal lawns to the east elevation of the house and provides access and parking for a further couple of
vehicles and links through to the original entrance driveway via a five
bar gate.

We have noticed… Before even entering The Coach House at Streamcross I had fallen in love with it! The crisp parallel stripes that
graced the skilfully manicured lawns that flank the approach to the
house created a most wonderful and smart first impression. The
well stocked garden displays a myriad of colour from the
abundance of blossoming flowers and impressive shrub borders,
thus making the whole setting so quintessentially English. On
entering the house the uniqueness of the property is immediately
apparent owing much to the well travelled life of its current owner. Many years of living internationally have without question left the
vendor's distinctive mark on the property with rich and varied
influences clearly displayed from a variety of interesting
destinations.
