Strategies to Fight Corruption Corruption is one of the biggest problems which hinder the development in Sri Lanka. Corruption can be found in both public and private sector institutes. Global Corruption Perceptions Index (GCPI) is a number which represents the degree of corruption in the public sector of a country. Higher the GCPI of a country lower its degree of corruption. This index is calculated by an international organization called “Transparency International”. Sri Lanka has got a GCPI of 38 and has been ranked 85 th on the list. In the Sri Lankan context one of the main reasons for corruption in the public sector can be identified as the low salary level of public civil servants. Appropriate and sufficient compensations and incentives should be provided to the civil servants to maintain their level of motivation and their purchasing power. Since the public wages are too low in Sri Lanka the civil servants are under a tremendous pressure. Therefore they strive to supplement their incomes and increase their purchasing power in unofficial, unethical, illegal ways. So increasing the public wages in a sustainable manner would be a great and an effective solution to minimize corruption.
