organization.TheBCWFisaregisteredcharityrepresentingmorethan50,000
individualmembersand100clubsoperatingin10regionsoftheprovince.
A message from the BCWF President, Jim Glaicar
BritishColumbiaisnotonlybeautiful;it’salsoCanada’smostecologicallyandbiologi-callydiverseprovince.
Asresidents,weunderstandourprovince’sspectacularwildernessdrawspeoplefromallovertheworld.It’soneofthereasonswhythepopulationofB.C.hasnearlydoubledinthepast25years,from2.4to4.5millionpeople.
Populationgrowth,economicdevelopmentandother factorssuchasclimatechangeplaceconstantpressureonfishandwildlifepopulationsandtheirhabitat.B.C.ishometomorethanhalfofthefishandwildlifespeciesindigenoustoCanada,butwecan’ttaketheuniqueandabundantbiodiversityofourprovinceforgranted.
Tremendouspressuresonthelandandresourceshaveresultedindeclinesinfishandwildlifepopulations.With1,597speciesand329ecologicalcommunitiesatriskinourprovince,theBCWildlifeFederation’smissiontosafeguardfish,wildlifeandtheirhabitatismoreimportantthanever.
TheFederation’soriginscanbetracedbacktothe1890’swhensomeofitscurrentclubswereformed.In1966,theprovincialSportsmen’sCouncilreorganizedunderthebanneroftheBCWildlifeFederationandadoptedanewconstitution.Thisnamechangerepre-sentedmoreclearlythefactthattheFederationwasinvolvedinallwayswithconserva-tionoffishandwildlifeandtheenvironmentforthebenefitofeveryone.TheFederationisstillgrowing,buttheprimaryaimsandobjectivesfrom1966remainunchanged.
ToensurethattheBCWildlifeFederationcontinuestomeetitsgoalofbeingasustain-ableandeffectiveconservationorganization,theBoardofDirectorsengagedinastra-tegicplanningprocesstoguideouractivitiesandfocusresources.Together,wecreatedafive-yearplan tokeepouractions,activitiesandprogramsalignedwithour vision,missionandgoals.
Mysincerethankstoalltheexecutive,directors,staff,clubs,directmembersandpart-nerswhoparticipatedinoursurveysandstrategicplanning.Theinformationandper-spectiveprovidedwasthebaseweusedtodevelopour2017-2022StrategicPlan.
The BCWF Strategic Context
The BCWF is a grassroots conservation organization incorporated under the B.C.SocietiesAct,andhasbeenaregisteredcharitysince1969.
ThestrengthoftheBCWildlifeFederationcomesfromitssolidmembershipbase.TheFederationisabletoquicklymobilizeresourceswhenthereisaneedonaparticularissue.
TheBCWFisahighlyrespectedorganizationwithingovernmentanddecisionmakingbodies because of its non-partisan, solution-focused and balanced approach toconservation.
The BCWF Strategic Objectives
1. Toensurethesound,long-termmanagementofBritishColumbia’sfish,wildlife,parkandoutdoorrecreationalresourcesinthebestinterestsofallBritishColumbians,andtocoordinateallthevoluntaryagencies,societies,clubsandindividualsinterestedinthatobjective,and

Todevelopandsupportcomprehensiveeducationalprograms tomakeallBritishColumbians aware of the value of fish, wildlife, park and outdoor recreationalresources,andtoarouseinthepublicconsciencearecognitionof,andarespectfor,theplaceoffish,wildlifeandoutdoorrecreationinthewiseintegrateduseoftheprovince’snaturalresources

Challenges and Opportunities
SomeofthechallengestheBCWFfacesare inherent in a provincial structurewhich must represent the issues of 10different regions with volunteer boards.The organization’s strategic plan willhelpaligntheBCWFBoardofDirectors,regionsandclubstoaproactiveapproachtoconservation.Theplanalsoaddressessuccessionplanningtoidentifyandtrainleadersattheregionalandclublevelandmentor them to lead the BCWF in thefuture.
Asfundingforprojectsandprogramsfromexternal sources becomes increasinglyunreliable, theBCWFneeds tobecomemore focussed on being a successfulsocial enterprise to ensure long-termfundingandfinancialsustainability.
The2017-2022strategicplanning is theroad map for conservation leadershipoverthenext5years.Thecurrentpublicshift towards greener, more sustainablelifestylespresentsopportunitiestoreachnewmembers.Asthegovernmentreducesfunding and downloads responsibilities,there is increasing opportunity for theBCWF to build strategic partnershipswith businesses and other like-mindedorganizations to accomplish mutualconservationgoalsandobjectives.
1. Board governance and oversight
• Roles,responsibilities,toolsandmethodologiesfor club presidents, regional presidents andBoardofDirectors
• Succession planning and mentorship forupcoming future leaders through LeadershipSuccessionPlan
• ImplementBoardCulturalChangeProgramtoassisttheBoardfunctioning
• Ensure committees, staff and contractorsare informed, coordinated and effective inaddressingbusinesspurposes
2. Retain and increase individual memberships
• Detailedtrackinganddevelopmentofmemberrecruitment and retention programs linked tostrategicgoals
• Improved communication and delivery ofmemberservices
• Development of a member engagementstrategy thatcoordinatescommunicationandoutreach throughout the province to ensurethat member needs are being captured andsolutionsprovided
