PUPIL FREE DAY
Knowing where you are now is the best way to move forward and is integral
to the growth of a teacher. The recent Pupil Free Day provided opportunities
for teachers to reflect on their practice and improve their teaching–
regardless of their career stage. Lee Watanabe Crockett, an educational
consultant, spoke with educators from all sites in our partnership about his
passion for the planet and impact we are having on it; and how this in turn is
having an effect on our students and the skills they will need for the future.
Students will need essential skills like creativity, problem solving, critical
thinking, and collaboration. Skills such as remembering and understanding
information is not enough. Our students need to be able to create, evaluate
and analyse their learning. We learnt about 10 shifts of practice that support
future focused learning. This formed a framework for teachers to reflect on
their work as educators and identify one shift to focus on to develop and
enhance their practice. The work we started on this Pupil Free Day will
continue enhance the learning program at Stradbroke School.
SENIOR EXECUTIVE & STUDENT VOICE
Stradbroke School has a newly appointed Senior Executive and Student Voice
team for Semester 1 2018. The job of the Student Voice and Senior Executive
team is to represent the student body in decision making at Stradbroke
School. Years 1 to 7 students meet on even weeks for the Student Voice
meeting, where school wide suggestions and issues raised in class meetings
can be discussed and actioned. Senior Executives (year 6/7) also meet with
myself on odd weeks to continue and deepen our insights, strategies and
ideas. We will begin 2018 reviewing the work that the Senior Executive and
Student Voice teams did last year with Rachel on reducing school yard rubbish
and deciding together, “where to from here?”
Stradbroke’s Twelve 2018 Senior Executives are:
FR3: Charlie Sproule and Odessa Katakasi
FR4: Abigail Papps and Caleb Scott
K3: Kahlia Sweet and Onkar Shukla
K7: Luke Valenti and Jasmin Baker
L5: Dakota Parish Ryan and Oxford Katakasi

GOVERNING COUNCIL
STRADBROKE SCHOOL GOVERNING COUNCIL
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
6.30PM, WEDNESDAY 7TH MARCH 2018
All families are invited to attend the Stradbroke School
Governing Council AGM on Wednesday 7th March at
6.30pm in the Stradbroke School Staff Room. A free crèche

Kids’ Zone by Wednesday 28th Feb to make a booking.
Booking is essential.
THE READING REVOLUTION AT STRADBROKE
One of our site priorities at Stradbroke is Independent
Reading. This is a term used in educational settings, where
students are involved in choosing and reading material (fiction
books, non-fiction, magazine, other media) for their
independent consumption and enjoyment. Instead of students
reading because they have to, independent reading gives
students a chance to read because they want to.
• Try the following to help motivate your child to read on their
own:
• Let them choose – your child will be so much more motivated
to read on their own if they choose books that they’re
interested in.
• Set reading goals – give your child something to work towards,
for example, they can aim to finish a book before the end of
the week, or learn five new words from a book they are
reading.
• Regular reading time – designate a special time after school
when your child can read without being disturbed. Setting a
regular time will help them get into the habit of reading
regularly, and it will soon become a part of their normal daily
routine.
• Be on hand to help – make sure you’re around if your child has
any questions about words they can’t read or don’t know the
meaning of. If they are having trouble with a word or sentence,
try to give them hints to see if they can work it out themselves,
instead of simply giving them the answer.
• Let them tell you all about it – like most people, when you
finish a book you want to tell people about it and share your
thoughts. Discuss your child’s book with them and ask them
questions that will help their comprehension, like ‘Who were
the main characters?’ ‘What did you think when…’, ‘What was
your favourite part?

Congratulations to Talia Cargin-Rowe who has been selected

DCSI CHECKS
The DCSI (Department for Communities & Social Inclusion)
screen is the criminal history screen required for all employees
and volunteers in schools who volunteer for an excursion,
camp or sport coaching. The fee for a DCSI screen for
volunteers is paid for by the school. The screen can take up to
three months to be processed so we are encouraging
volunteers to plan ahead for this year. Please see Anona or
Kathy in the Front Office to initiate the process.
SPECIAL INTEREST IN MUSIC 2018
ICAS
International Competitions and Assessments for Schools
Your child is invited to participate in ICAS in 2018.
ICAS provides an opportunity for all students in Years 3 to 12
to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external
testing situation. It provides teachers, parents and students
with comprehensive reporting of results in the areas of Digital
Technologies, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and
Writing. The tests are an excellent preparation for national
tests and the student report is useful for highlighting your
child’s strengths and weaknesses.
All students receive a certificate and an individual student
report indicating which questions they answered correctly and
their score compared with the rest of the students tested. The
certificate and individual student report are also suitable for
your child to include in a portfolio.
Certificates are awarded for each year level as follows:
• High Distinction to the top 1% of entrants
• Distinction to the next 10% of entrants
• Credit to the next 25% of entrants
• Participation to all other participating students
A UNSW medal is awarded when the highest score in each year
level in each state in each subject is judged to be sufficiently
meritorious. Students must sit on the official sitting dates to be
eligible for a UNSW medal.
The entry fee per student is as follows:
Digital Technologies Yr 3-7 8th May $9.00
Science Yr 2-7 29th May $9.00
Spelling Yr 2-7 13th June $12.00
Writing Yr 3-7 14th June $18.00
English Yr 2-7 31st July $9.00
Mathematics Yr 2-7 14th August $9.00

What parents have said… A step dad recalled an incident at the weekend with his 12 year old step daughter. He said that the input he had received the previous week from the course helped him keep his cool and brought a more favourable outcome.
A single Mum who had presented as quite anxious on the first night told the group in week 2 that she had made an appointment with her 15 year old son during the week and had a far more favourable discussion with him than would previously have been the case.
