Chemical weathering – a reaction

Physical weathering – it is carving ex. The Grand Canyon

Sediment is the result of weathering.

Weathering

Running water is the main agent of erosion

The Grand Canyon was formed by the Colorado River

Gravity causes eroded material to slide downhill

Sheet erosion is when rain washes away a layer of topsoil

Erosion

Erosion – the lifting and physical removal of rock particles, dirt, and sand

Deposition – the laying down of matter by a natural process

Sediment – solid fragments of inorganic or organic materials that come from weathering

Gravity – the force of attraction that exists between two particles of matter or objects

Weathering and Erosion Vocabulary

It is the cycle that rocks go through

3 different ways are cooling, crystallization, and melting.

3 types are: Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic.

The Rock Cycle

It is rock that is formed from cooling lava

One type is extrusive igneous rock – it is rock that forms on the outside of volcanoes

Another is intrusive igneous rock – it is rock that hardens inside of the volcano

Igneous Rock

It is a rock that is made up of other rocks and particles of sand.

It is formed when deposited sediment hardens

Fossils are most likely found in this rock

Sedimentary Rock

It is rocks that were changed by heat and pressure.

They used to be sedimentary and igneous rock

Metamorphic Rock

It states that the oldest rocks are normally on the bottom layers, and the more recent ones are on the top.

If there where ocean animal fossils on a hill it would mean that that area was once an ocean

Law of Superposition

It is a time scale that shows the different eras and what animals lived during that time period.

Geologic Time Scale

It is the remains of a dead organism

Fossils are, most likely, found in sedimentary rock

The law of superposition tells us how old a fossil is
