Born Araminta “Minty” Ross in Maryland, USA, around 1822, “Harriet” adopted her mother’s name after escaping slavery. She also adopted her husband’s surname “Tubman” to hide her identity. And later she was known as Moses, her code name, in reference to the biblical story of Moses who attempted to lead the Jews to the Promised Land and free them from slavery.
