Introduction

The SPAR International Store Development Seminar puts a spot-light on our SPAR retail formats and creates a unique opportunity to exchange knowhow within the SPAR family and enable us to identify best practice. The programme for the Seminar is rich in content and draws on the expertise and knowledge from SPAR Partners and also from within SPAR International.

The Seminar is again linked with EuroShop, a world-class Trade Fair on store operations, shop fitting and design. Thus during our stay in Dusseldorf, there is an opportunity to combine best practice from within SPAR with the latest developments in equipment, technology and software.

We are delighted to welcome you as a participant to the Store Development Seminar 2017 and are confident that you will return to your SPAR colleagues full of enthusiasm to share many new ideas.

The agenda of the Seminar includes presentations on flagship store design projects from SPAR Partners as well as an overview on the SPAR International Store Development Programme and the different developments undertaken in various store formats.

We close out with our Guest Speaker Michael Pawlyn from Exploration Architecture, with a thought provoking presentation entitled ‘Biomimicry, Using Nature’s Genius!

The Store Development Seminar will be held at The Leonardo Royal Hotel, which is situated just 100 metres away from the main shopping street in Düsseldorf, the elegant Königsallee. The hotel is well connected by public transport: Guests enjoy the proximity to the Central Station, which is easily accessible in three tram stops from the hotel; Düsseldorf International Airport is about 20 minutes away by taxi; and the EuroShop Retail Trade Fair is just a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

Michael PawlynExploration Architecture

Michael Pawlyn has been described as a pioneer of biomimicry and established Exploration Architecture in 2007 to focus on designing high performance buildings and solutions for the circular economy. Exploration has collaborated with numerous organisations demonstrating environmental leadership including, The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Interface, Lush and Biomimicry 3.8.

In 2008 Exploration was short-listed for the Young Architect of the Year Award and the internationally renowned Buckminster Fuller Challenge. Since then the company has developed a ground breaking office project, an ultra-low energy data centre and a zero waste textiles factory. Michael Pawlyn jointly initiated the widely acclaimed Sahara Forest Project; the first version of which was built in 2012 and opened by the Emir of Qatar during the Doha Climate Change talks.

Prior to setting up Exploration Michael Pawlyn worked with Grimshaw for ten years and was central to the team that radically re-invented horticultural architecture for the Eden Project. He was responsible for leading the design of the Warm Temperate and Humid Tropics Biomes and the subsequent phases that included proposals for a third Biome for plants from dry tropical regions.

He is regularly booked as a keynote speaker on innovation and, in 2011, became one of only a small handful of architects to have a talk posted on TED.com. His TED talk has since had over 1.6 million viewings. The first edition of his book Biomimicry in Architecture has been RIBA Publications’ best-selling title and the second edition was published in October 2016. Exploration is currently working on a range of biomimicry-based architectural projects and consultancy.
