We want you to get the most from your time with us and walk away with real skills for real jobs. That’s why we have working hair and beauty salons, a restaurant, theatre, trade skills centre and a motor vehicle workshop. Our courses are all about building your knowledge and then putting what you’ve learnt into practice. After all, we know learning isn’t just about the theory, it’s getting stuck in and having a go.

There’s plenty of PCs and Macs available too, and our ICLT team are on hand to offer IT support.

APPRENTICESHIPSIf you’re ready to start work, an apprenticeship could be for you. You’ll learn on the job and pick up a qualification, all while earning a wage.

We work with employers from lots of different industries, so we can help find the right place for you.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?We’ll match you with a local employer who is recruiting an apprentice and guide you through the process. Apprenticeships last between one and four years. You’ll pick up the skills of the job while at work. On some apprenticeships you’ll spend one day a week at College.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?Yes if you’re looking to start your career now and prefer to learn in a working environment. It’s your opportunity to impress bosses with your determination and enthusiasm.

WHAT YOU NEED…

Different apprenticeships have different entry requirements but all require that:

You’re 16 or over

You live in England and are not takingpart in full-time education

You’ll be required to be in employment for at least 30 hours per week

You may need to come into College one day a week if your apprenticeship is in a trade including construction or hair/beauty.

You’ll undertake functional skills in English and maths and, in some cases ICT, as part of your apprenticeship framework.

(If you have a higher education qualification (degree or equivalent) you may not be eligible for funding.)

The national minimum wage for an apprenticeship is £3.30 per hour.

Take a look around, everything you see has been designed by someone, from your smart phone to your shoes, even the pattern on your socks! Studying Art & Design will give you a new way of looking at things, the perfect way to get into the creative industries.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Exploring different techniques our Art & Design courses will help you discover your own creativity. By carrying out a range of projects you’ll develop skills in drawing and painting, sculpture, textiles and graphics. You’ll also visit exhibitions, have a go at location work and see your own work exhibited.

AVIATIONIf you want to work in the aviation industry there aremore opportunities than you might think. On our programmes you’ll learn about the roles both on the ground and in the sky, from cabin crew, security, passenger agents to air traffic control. Our team, who all have experience and skills of the industry, will help you work out where you want to be and give you the skills to stand out from the crowd.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Trained to industry standards that are as current as possible, the College’s industry links will ensure lessons are at the forefront of this rapidly evolving sector. You’ll learn about baggage processing, check in, dispatch, health and safety, aircraft marshalling and security. Lessons will include a mixture of theory and practical sessions along with educational visits and guest speakers. Recent trips have included visits to London and New York.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?Yes if you want to work in the aviation industry and are willing to put in the groundwork. To work in aviation you need to be a good communicator and have a determination to succeed in this competitive industry.

What will you be? A BEAUTY THERAPIST?As a beauty therapist you could earn from £12,000 to £17,000 a year carrying out face and body treatments for clients. Go on to become a salon manager and you could earn £20,000 plus with opportunities around the world!

BEAUTYWhether you want to work in a high street salon, run your own business or travel the world offering treatments on a cruise ship, a career in beauty can get you there. Our programmes will give you the skills and knowledge you need to get started, deliver great service and master thelatest techniques.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Training in our on-site salon you’ll develop the skills and knowledge you need to launch your future career. Starting with the basics you’ll go on to learn more advanced techniques and treatments. You'll also learn about health and safety, how the body works and get pointers on setting up your own business.

COMPUTINGWe all use technology every day whether at school, work or at home. You can put that knowledge to good use by turning it into a future career. If you are interested in how computers work, want to learn how to write code or build a computer network that is secure from hackers, we have the course for you.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Offering hands-on practical experience you’ll learn a range of skills including; how computer systems work, how to protect computers and data, how to programme, including games programming, how to design and create your own website, how to design and build a computer network. Using industry-standard hardware and software you’ll work on projects and assignments, often based on realistic workplace demands.

Seeing the ribbon cut on her own business proved a special moment for former Stockton Riverside College student Charlotte.

The opening of Lux Hair & Beauty in Thornaby marked the culmination of her hard work.

Charlotte spent six years at the College honing her trade, picking up qualifications in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Nail Services, before going on to work in the industry.

Now she’s launched her own business, opened by TOWIE star Chloe Sims. “I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my College tutors. I loved my time at College and didn’t want to leave.”

Designs on a dream career have become a reality for Stephanie who is living her childhood dream working as an illustrator with a publishing agency.

The former Blakeston School student (now North Shore) said it was a love of art that led her to study Creative Digital Media at Stockton Riverside College.“I wanted to do something that had a bit more of a story or a purpose to it.”It certainly opened up opportunities that she hadn’t previously considered.

Looking back today she puts much of her success down to receiving a good grounding in the subject delivered in a way that she says is true to working in the industry.

SHARLENEPainting & Decorating

Sharlene is painting herself a bright new future after swapping the stage for a career in the trades. Problems with her vocal chords forced the former singer to reconsider her future. “I always knew whatever I did would have to be hard work.”The Stockton mum chose to retrain as a painter and decorator at Stockton Riverside College.She’s now running her own property maintenance, painting and decorating company, Repair, Prepare & Décor.

“I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for the College. Being in an environment with people of all different ages has given me so much confidence, I really have enjoyed it.”

Now after receiving four university offers the former St Michael’s Catholic Academy student is plotting his route to a high-flying career. After opting for a degree in Business Management at Sunderland University.
