Field of expertise: rolling stock and bogie design, FEM calculations, rolling stock project engineering and management, expertise for rolling stock repairing and revamping, rolling stock manuals and maintenance plans, rolling stock shop equipment design and layout, railways superstructure expertise, assessment of design and testing for the purpose of the rolling stock homologation, engineering and RAMS supports for ECMs. STM is an engineering company fully oriented to the rolling stock design. The Company is located in Florence (Italy) and it is approximately 30 years old. It was founded at the beginning of the '80 years with the main mission to provide engineering support to the Italian State Railways engineering department, that is located in Florence. From that time STM has provided engineering services for several other customers including local small companies and world leaders like Bombardier Trasportation and Ansaldobreda. The STM capability to support all that customers and in covering a very large field of required specialisations is possible also because very experienced engineers are available in the Florence area. This is thanks to the presence of the Trenitalia engineering dept, the Italian National Safety Agency (ANSF), the Osmannoro laboratories, and the most of the Italian rolling stock and signaling suppliers like Ansaldobreda, Knorr Bremse, GE, Thales, ECM, Italcertiferr, IDS. STM is continuously involved in the technical evaluation and feasibility studies for the revamping or repairing of passenger coach, locomotive, freight wagons, and track maintenance machines. At the present time the most important STM customers are the followings: - Bombardier Transportation (Zefiro High Speed Train, ETR1000 manuals, Bidding activities worldwide) - RINA Service of Genova: various assessments for the homologation of rolling stock in Italy and in foreign countries - SIFTA of Moncalieri: Freight wagon design updating, tests, expertises for incident and for repairing cost evaluation, ECM support, Maintenance plan and maintenance procedures, CMS Risk Analysis) - Trenitalia SpA (repairs of damaged rolling stock: technical specs, cost evaluation) - Various italian owners of Railway Maintenance machines: drafting of the maintenance plan and of the maintenance manuals for the purpose of the homologation. - Funivie SpA of Savona - Italy (railway superstructure assessment and procurement support) Short descriptions of some recent projects are provided in the following.

1) ETR 1000 (2012-2013) Bombardier ZEFIRO. A couple of years ago Trenitalia has ordered 50 new HST trainsets (360km/h) to be designed and manufactured by a consortium including Bombardier Transportation and Ansaldobreda. This train shall be capable to run in almost all the european high speed networks: Italy, Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Suisse, Austria.

The first coaches are starting just now the static tests. STM has been involved in the design for the following parts: - Conceptual design of the driver's cab, 7 corridors signalling arrangement (ERMTS/ETCS level 2), and the pilot coach electronic room - Technical specifications for subsystems procurements (driver's bench, interiors, floors, electrical cubicles, lightning, ...) - Safety earthing design and management - Production drawings for the welded parts of the carbody structure. - Installation drawings of interiors and of the equipment in the pilot coaches and of the driver's cab - Production drawing of the interiors of the luxury coach - Maintenance manuals engineering.

2) AGV (Alstom). One year ago the NTV Company started to run its fleet of 25 AGV High Speed Trains (350km/h) designed and built by Alstom (France). STM has been involved trough RINA Service in the homologation process with ANSF (Italian National Safety Agency). STM provided the support for the assessment of the following parts: - Kinematic Gauge - Souplesse - Aerodynamics - Noise

3) Durmazlar tramway (2012-2013). The Durmazlar Company of Bursa (Turkey) is developing a new design of low floor urban tramway that is now undergoing the first phase of the dynamic tests. STM has been involved trough RINA Service for the tramway design validation carbody, bogies and equipment), the testing bench equipments (carbody compression test, bogie press, load weighting bench), and for the prototype testing activities for the purpose of the homologation.

4) Trentino Trasporti SCMT installation (2013). The carborne SCMT equipment (Automatic Train Control) must be retrofitted in all the existing italian railcar to be admitted to run in passenger service on the national railways network. Trough the STS supplier, STM has commissioned to design the ATC system integration and to supply all the documentation for the Design Reviews and the production drawings to allow the installation of the onboard equipment (bogie, cab, roof).

5) SITFA (2013). The SITFA Company is running a fleet of approximately 2000 wagons. In the framework of its European ECM activities (Entity in Charge for Maintenance) SITFA has selected STM as partner for all the engineering activities needed to perform the maintenance of the fleet in accordance with the European union 445/2011 regulation. This is including the safety risk assessment to be performed according the European Common Safety Method.

6) Expertise on Trenitalia damaged coached (2012). Trenitalia required STM to expertise the passenger MD type coaches (MDVC 50 83 31-86 191-6 nAB and 50 83 31-86 178-3 nAB ) and to assist its procurement activity for the bid of the repairs (damaged frames and carborne equipment).

STM provided Trenitalia with the investigation report, the technical specification for repairing, and the budgetary cost evaluation.

7) Revamping of Passenger Coach Bogie (2012). Bombardier Transportation required STM to provide assistance for the technical specification, procurement and handling of the materials needed to perform the revamping of 200 bogies of 160km/h passenger coaches by Trenitalia SpA.

8) ETR1000 Maintenance manuals (2013). Bombardier Transportation required STM to support the technical management and to provide the technical integrations needed to allow the editing of the maintenance manuals to be delivered to Trenitalia for the new high speed italian train ETR1000 (Zefiro family).
