Water not causing pipe leaks, second study says

See COPPER page 6

ST. LUCIE WEST — A second test to examine what is causing leaky copper pipes to spring up across St. Lucie West has deter-mined the service district’s water isn’t to blame. According to a March study

done by Ohio-based metal experts at Metallurgical Solutions Inc., high levels of chlorine stemming from installation is the problem. The St. Lucie West Services

District paid $9,800 for the com-pany to test seven pipe samples from The Vineyards, Lake Forest and the Cascades communities. Chlorine may have originated

from the flux used during instal-lation of the water lines. Flux is an oxidizing agent used on copper pipes before soldering. It helps clean the pipe and allows the solder to better adhere.“This suggests that either exces-

sive flux was used during instal-

lation or insufficient flushing of the tubes after soldering prevent-ed complete removal of the flux material,” corporate director Bri-an D. Joyce wrote in the 31-page report. District manager Dennis Pickle

didn’t have information on when the sample pipes were manufac-tured or installed. He said the second test was

conducted to verify results from a study earlier this year by another engineering and planning firm to analyze the district’s water. The district has had approx-

imately 86 complaints of leaky pipes since the beginning of the

“At this point all I could tell them (residents) is to be aware that there are faulty pipes out there.”

Mission accomplished: 100K in a day

FORT PIERCE — As summer approaches, local food pantries that once brimmed with nonper-ishable items donated during the holidays are dry and in dire need.Scott Van Duzer, Lake Charles

resident and owner of Big Apple Pizza and Pasta in Fort Pierce, made it his mission last week to ensure the shelves at two local charities don’t remain bare.During The Van Duzer Founda-

tion’s 24-hour food drive, dubbed “One Day to Give,” the philan-thropist, made momentarily famous nationally by his bearhug embrace of President Barack Obama last year, surpassed his goal of 100,000 pounds of food by 3,332.“You never take things for

granted. We have a wonderful community that truly cares about each other and together we make a tremendous difference,” Van Duzer said.Food collected benefited the

Mustard Seed Ministries in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie. Pro-gram director Stacy Malinowski said collecting food is critical mid-year when donations are typically low.

“That’s notorious for anywhere in this country or anywhere else. When there’s a holiday, every-body feels good, they feel (good) about giving and helping others.

And that’s it and I understand.”Malinowski expects to feed ap-

proximately 200 families, who will each receive a 25-pound box of nonperishable food. She said the

food should last until fall.Malinowski said the summer

Davis’s amusement arcade is one of close to two dozen arcades in St. Lucie County made illegal by House Bill 155 and its com-panion Senate Bill 1030, which was signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott last Wednesday. It’s estimated approximately 1,000 strip mall casinos and contro-versial Internet cafes across the state face similar circumstances. The law effectively shuts down the gambling establishments by deeming the slot-like computer machines that dole out gift cards as prizes illegal. The law, which took effect im-

mediately, comes on the heels of a three-year investigation that indicated the nonprofit Allied Veterans of the World is operating a $290 million illegal gambling business that barely benefited veterans, while execu-tives reaped the profits. Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, who provided public relations consulting for Allied Veterans, resigned last month after she was questioned about her ties to the Jackson-ville-based organization. Carroll doesn’t face any charges.Davis, who’s been in the adult

arcade business locally for the past 10 years, said he and his 17 employees, along with scores of faithful patrons, are collat-eral damage. Left with a vacant building, dozens of devalued ma-chines and impending financial hardship, the business owner said he’ll try his best to mone-tarily help his former employees forced to file for state unem-ployment benefits. Although he wouldn’t disclose the details, Davis said he and the Florida Ar-cade Association will fight back.

St. Lucie West resident and Golden Nugget employee Nancy Scott, 51, spent her last evening on the job shutting down ma-chines and bidding customers farewell.“The trickle-down effect on the

unemployment, the empty store-fronts and just what it does in the community is a long-lasting effect,” Scott said as she em-braced arcade regular Charles Connolly, 91, for the final time.Connolly, affectionately known

as “Pops” by friends at the ar-cade, plays the machines every day. Davis’s devoted patron said

the arcade hosts free holiday and birthday parties for players and even serves complimentary meals. Connolly said he’ll miss the company.“Where do I go now, being all

alone? I’m with people here in the arcade that have become friends,” the Port St. Lucie resi-dent said. “If I have to sit by the boob tube, I’m going to ferment and I’ll be gone and I don’t want that kind of life. I want to live with people.”Carol Strencejewski, 70, of Fort

Pierce said the affordable enter-tainment will be next to impossi-

ble to replace.“We do this because it’s clos-

er than going to the casinos (in Hollywood) and it gives us a night out, something that we can enjoy,” she said. “We’re very disappointed that this is taking place.”Strencejewski’s partner, Rich-

ard Reynolds, 77, a seasonal res-ident of Port St. Lucie said Gov. Scott’s hasty stroke of the pen is disheartening. “I just think he cut (their)

throats. If he’s looking for anoth-er term, he’s not going to get it,” Reynolds said.

year, which could total thou-sands of dollars in home dam-age and pipe repairs, Pickle said. The district serves ap-proximately 7,000 customer properties with a population of 20,000. The testing, conducted by

Baskerville-Donovan Inc., which has offices in Pensacola, Tampa and Melbourne, evaluat-ed daily water logs, lab testing results and drinking water re-ports. The report concluded the district’s water was not causing the leaks. “Based on information col-

lected and evaluated, the fin-ished water being produced by the SFWMD is not considered corrosive and meets industry standards for stabilized drink-ing water,” the report stated. Copper corrosion, also known

as copper pitting, can take

anywhere from several months or years before the corrosion causes a leak.Pickle said there isn’t much

more the district can do.“At this point all I could tell

them (residents) is to be aware that there are faulty pipes out there,” said Pickle, who was to have a staff meeting with the Copper Development Associ-ation on April 18 to see what recourse residents may have. “There isn’t anything the dis-trict can do at this point if the water has been deemed not corrosive.”Pickle, who said the issue is

occurring nationwide, said it wouldn’t be wise to continue to pump cash into more testing.“We feel that there’s not much

more we need to be doing from a utility stand point, because in essence, we’re spending the taxpayers, or the rate payers dollars on these reports.”

Local plumber a fixture in Port St. Lucie

PORT ST. LUCIE — Art Stover has been in Port St. Lucie for 35 years. When he came to the city, there wasn’t much here. “My mom and dad came here

from New Jersey,” he said. “I was working as a welder in a shipyard. Even as a foreman, making only $8 an hour wasn’t working for me.”He came down here to work as

a plumber’s helper for $3.50 an hour. It took several years, but he eventually opened his own busi-ness.“I worked for eight months and

had my own truck,” he said. “I had to wait for four years to get my license, and I got a master plumb-er’s license. A friend said, ‘Jump in,’ and there I was with a pickup truck and a couple of shovels.”The company grew, but as with so

many businesses, it was affected by the downturn in the economy. As the economy has improved, Stover has continued offering res-idential and commercial plumbing services for new construction and repair services for existing homes, businesses, schools and other structures. He has done work at larger installations including sev-eral Home Depots and a Wal-Mart

Supercenter. “We do a lot of remodeling,” he

said. “We’re really big on service. That means repairs and replacing water heaters, faucets, toilets, and drain cleaning. We have our own machines.”Stover said that water conserva-

tion has become a big issue with customers. Old toilet flush tanks used to hold 3½ gallons, and the first smaller, water-conserving tanks were 1.6 gallons. “They didn’t flush properly,”

Stover said. “Once they got it right at 1.28 gallons, they’re better than the old toilets.” He said that technology is bet-

ter for faucets, as well, using one touch or no-touch sensors to make them work.“Shower heads are also conserv-

ing water and working well,” he said. “They’re high-tech. We have shower heads that work off your iPod. We did a trade show and had one on display. It was a big hit and we could have sold a case.”Stover said that hot water heat-

ers have also become much more energy-efficient, and that while some are a substantial initial investment, there are rebates and incentives to encourage conserva-tion. For a large family, where sav-ings could run $60-$80 a month, units will pay for themselves in a

few years.Plumbing contracting is Stover’s

business, but he has other import-ant things in his life, including his three adult children, a registered nurse, an attorney and a chef. He is also involved in mission trips with the First Baptist Church of Stuart.“We made several mission trips to

Haiti,” he said. “We built a church and a water cistern for a village of 30,000. We built the cistern with a pump to the medical clinic. It was pretty awesome. We finished it last month. Next year, we’re off to Bra-zil. Last year, we went to Kentucky.

They were hit by tornadoes and we helped rebuild churches.” Stover also tries to give back to

the local community, helping with Habitat for Humanity in Stuart. All isn’t work for Art Stover. Off

the job, he’s on the golf course or fishing. Still, his business of 30 years enables him to do all the other things he loves. Good busi-ness and good works are a good combination.

influx of families who request rent and utilities assistance because they have to feed their children, who are on the reduced lunch program during the school year, but who are on summer vacation. Malinowski said the charity

easy-to-make items rich in nu-trients, including granola bars, canned tuna and peanut butter and jelly. This year, Mustard Seed part-

nered with a soup kitchen, Sarah’s Kitchen. Malinowski said she’ll give the kitchen super-sized and jumbo cans of food that can’t fit in family boxes. Kitchen founder, Bob Carey of

St. Lucie West, said the drive will help garner essential items.“We always need basic food stuff

like green beans and corn, pasta and rice,” Carey said. The kitchen serves approximate-

ly 300 people at different sites four nights a week in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie. Carey expects to open a fifth site in Fort Pierce in June.Carey expressed his heartfelt

One of the many reasons for their success, according to head coach Aaron Sheppard, is his girls’ willingness to get their uni-forms dirty if need be, a concept that their male counterparts don’t always grasp. “The girls just play hard,” Shep-

pard said, who is also a part of the Treasure Coast boys’ football coaching staff. “The results take care of themselves if you just play hard.”“Every play, they’ll dive, lay out

and give their body to try and get a flag. They’ll kill themselves to get that flag. That’s stuff that we try to preach to the boys but don’t get all the time; to give it their all, lay out and do the right things.”At press time, the Lady Titans

held an 8-0 record. Before the story went to print, Treasure Coast will have traveled to South Fork High School to play the Lady Bulldogs on April 16.What has helped Treasure Coast

reach this level of play is the team continuity from season one to season two.

“Last year our team was pretty good,” Sheppard said. “We only lost one girl from last year’s team so the girls that came back are experienced and understand the game.”One of the girls who returned

to the squad was senior Andrea Dunkley. Dunkley, who is known by her

coaches as “Ms. Funkley” for her supreme athleticism and skills, was a member of the Lady Titans’ varsity basketball team for the past three years. She was a mem-ber of the Titans dance team, but Dunkley has always loved and played football.“Growing up, I was always

around a lot of boys, so I always actually wanted to play football,” Dunkley said. “It’s unfortunate that we can’t tackle, but flag foot-ball is the next best thing.”As the leader of the team, Dunk-

ley hopes to go far in the school’s first attempt to participate in Dis-trict 20 postseason tournament.“We are trying to make it to

states and get a ring,” Dunkley said. “We are trying to be the best.”

Q – Why is the edge of my crown dark? - Bob, St. Lucie West

A – The typical porcelain baked over metal crowns that were the main material used from the 1970s to the present may tend to darken a tooth and not allow light to pass near the gum line. This often can be seen as a darkening or blue hue to the gums. All ceramic crowns now exist that overcome these limitations with no dark metal layer.

Organization works with families of injured and fallen heroes

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — When tragedy strikes in the line of duty, The Hundred Club is there to help pick up the pieces. The non-profit’s St. Lucie County chap-ter, which was formed in 1987, strives to provide financial help for spouses and family of law enforcement officers, firefighters and other first responders who have paid the ultimate sacrifice or become disabled while on the job.Club president Jane Rowley of

Tradition said the organization wants to give families of fallen he-roes some kind of peace of mind.“There’s very little we could do at

(that) point, but make (the family) feel we’re there when they need us,” Rowley said.As soon as the club learns of

a death, its 14-member board quickly assembles to make funer-al arrangements if a family needs assistance. The club also coor-dinates and pays for airfare and housing for family members who live out of town.“People do not realize when

there is a death, there are hidden expenses right off the bat that there’s no preparation time for,” Rowley said.During the recent death of St.

Lucie County Sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, who was gunned down in Fort Pierce on Feb. 28, Rowley said the club sprang into action to help. A team of volunteers from the club and Westside Baptist Church, where the service was held, organized the funeral, which was attend-ed by approximately 4,000 from around the country, she said.Rowley said community and

business support is what allows the organization to help griev-ing families. The church cov-ered Morales’s funeral expenses while The Hundred Club raised $56,645 for Morales’s widow and

two young daughters, Rowley said.“The wonderful, wonderful peo-

ple at Westside Baptist Church always open their doors when something like this happens,” Rowley said. “They don’t ask for anything, but we’re going to be giving them a donation for the work they did.”The Hundred Club was first

born in Detroit in 1950. During that time, law enforcement was on full alert against civil unrest that led to a number of casu-alties. Auto dealer Bill Packer created a touching way to assist a police widow. He wrote 100 friends, asking each for $100. Each friend contributed and the rest is history.Rowley said since the St. Lucie

Club’s establishment 26 years ago, raising funds through mem-ber sign-up and donations is a constant effort. Among its ser-vices, the club awards an annual scholarship to Indian River State College for a family member of a first responder who lives in St.

ber estimates he’s helped more than 1,000 kids through the nine programs his organization offers. Some of Barber’s events aim to

raise food, not money, for needy families; partner youth with the elderly to bond and learn music together and involve the area’s homeless population into a performing group with the hope that they realize their full poten-tial.“Art is a catalyst to solve prob-

lems in the community,” Barber said.Performing arts facilitates

learning in a way no other sub-ject can, Barber added.“Art accesses emotion in a

unique way,” said Barber, who added the same musical compo-sition can garner different emo-tions from various individuals.“You could sit and listen to

a piece and I’m sitting right next to you, and I’m crying and you’re elatedLong lasting lessons are

learned through the performing arts because of the unique bond it forges with the human soul, Barber said.“The way that it elicits that

emotion and brings out that emotion in us is a unique, beautiful and special thing,” Barber said. “It’s also why you learn better when arts are going on. It’s why German surgeons are playing Mozart when they’re cutting into people ... it’s also why they use music therapy to teach people how to speak again after a stroke.”Lyric soprano and Martin

County High School student Savanna Webber, 16, echoed Barber’s sentiment.“Music and dance and theater

are special because it’s some-thing that has so much passion in it already,” said Webber, who sings classical opera. “There’s so much passion for you to plug into. You become one with the music. It’s an experience that no

other sport or any other activity can give you.”As part of Artists for a Cause,

Webber has performed at nurs-ing homes and assisted living facilities to spread the joys of her craft.“It means a lot to me because

I like to promote the arts in the community and to give an op-portunity for less fortunate kids to experience the joys of music and dance and art, whatever form it may be in. It’s wonderful to share that with people.”But the night wasn’t all about

the love of music. It was about the love of food, too.“Isn’t food about love?” Chef

Peter Perry said. The commercial real estate

broker by day and Italian food connoisseur by night, showed attendees how to make the per-fect pasta from scratch, along with other Italian dishes, while listening to authentic Italian music. Patrons enjoyed Perry’s lively

presentation of some of his Si-cilian mother’s best recipes, all while donating for a good cause.

Grease is the Word in Vero Beach Riverside Theatre’s Simply

Amazing Season concludes with the effervescent musical come-dy “Grease” on the Stark Stage. Written by composer, lyricist and librettists Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, “Grease” takes the stage through May 4 and is sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors and Riv-erside Theatre’s Patron Producers group. “Grease” is a co-produc-tion between Riverside Theatre and the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Get ready to hand-jive the

night away with the rollicking, hip-shaking, original high school musical, “Grease.” Danny, the ‘bad boy greaser’ falls in love with Sandy the ‘girl next door’, but will their differences keep them apart or will love conquer all? Featuring the unforgettable songs “You’re The One That I Want,” “Summer Nights,” “We Go Together,” “Hope-lessly Devoted To You,” and many more, “Grease” is the electrifyin’, rock ‘n’ roll musical of a simpler time — of growin’ up, cruisin’, and goin’ steady.

The show opened at the Eden Theatre on Feb. 14, 1972 and garnered seven Tony Award nom-inations. When the show closed in April 1980 it had run for 3,388 performances, making it the lon-gest-running Broadway show to date. “A Chorus Line” would sur-pass that total a few years later. “Grease” became a hit in

London, a smash musical film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, and garnered two successful Broadway revivals in 1994 and 2007. Set in 1959 at Rydell High

School, “Grease” follows the lives of 10 working-class teenagers as they follow their hearts and their dreams. While the musical score recreates the sounds of a bygone era, the story deals with issues that are still current – falling in love, fitting in, never giving up on your goals. Riverside Theatre’s production

is directed by Bruce Lumpkin and stars Matthew Ragas as Danny, Laura Giknis as Sandy, Michael Warrell as Kenickie, Richard Cer-

FORT PIERCE — More than 50 students, ages 9-15, will take the stage when Indian River State College’s Performing Arts Acade-my presents “The Little Mermaid Jr.” on April 26-27. The students come from St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties.Jane Whitaker, music teacher

at Fairlawn Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, is the Performing Arts Academy’s youth musical theater director. She said that the youngsters have worked extremely hard to put the show together.“For this program, there was an

audition seven or eight weeks ago,” she said. “There were five or six judges including actors and choreographers. Then the stu-dents rehearsed for seven weeks, four nights a week to put on the three performances.”Whitaker said that she chose the

show for several reasons. “It’s a show I had never done,”

she said. “We needed something new and a little more challenging. I had a strong enough cast. About half of them have been with me for three or four years and the other half have never been in a produc-tion. “The children are acting as ani-

mal characters. It’s a little more of a stretch for some. Teaching the strategy of not moving as a person is challenging, but they’re doing really well.”The cast includes Jade Spag-

nuolo as Ariel; Aidan McDon-nell as Sebastian; Taylor Hall as Flounder; Ally Wenger as Scuttle; Jaden Keys as King Triton; Halle Reynolds as Ursula; Terry Gard-ner as Prince Eric; Justin Adrian as Grimsby and Wesley Hinds as Chef Louis.Whitaker is serving as director

and choreographer. Her daughter Brooke serves as her assistant. Adri Becker and Joe Wilson are the tech crew, responsible for sets and lighting.

“They do amazing things,” Whita-ker said. “They treat these kids as if it were a college production.”The Performing Arts Academy

follows the college semester, with sessions in the fall and spring. The cost for the seven-week ses-sion is $165, and includes cos-tumes for the productions.Whitaker also leads two two-week

summer camp sessions at IRSC. The first, for those 8-11, will meet from June 17-28. The second, for those 9-14, runs from July 22-Aug. 2. The camp is open from 8 a.m-5 p.m. and the cost is $200 for the two weeks. “The camps are open to anyone,”

Whitaker said. “At the end of the two weeks, they put on a show for family and friends. In addition to musical theater, there are other activities, including swimming.”

Indian River State College’s Per-forming Arts Academy students present Disney’s “The Little Mer-maid Jr.” at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce, on April 26-27. Performanc-es are at 7 p.m. on April 26—27 and at 2 p.m. on the 27th. Tickets are $8 and are available at the IRSC box office, by calling (772) 462-4750 or online at www.irsc.edu. For more information about the

summer camp program, contact Rebecca Shearer or Ben Rowley at (772) 462-7695.
