Kickback may occur when the noseor tip of the guide bar touches anobject, or when the wood closes inand pinches the saw chain in thecut. Tip contact in some cases maycause a lightning fast reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar upand back towards the operator.Pinching the saw chain along thetop of the guide bar may push theguide bar rapidly back towards theoperator. Either of these reactionsmay cause you to lose control of thesaw which could result in seriouspersonal injury.

Section 5.12 of ANSI B 175.1-1991sets certain performance and design criteria related to chainsawkickback. STIHL has developed acolor code system using green andyellow to help you select a power-head, bar and chain combinationthat complies with the kickbackrequirements of the ANSI Standard.See the sections entitled "SafetyPrecautions" and "Specifications"of this manual.

Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into your saw.As a chainsaw user, you should

take several steps to keep your cutting jobs free from accident or injury.

1. With a basic understanding ofkickback, you can reduce or eli-minate the element of surprise.Sudden surprise contributes toaccidents.

2. Keep a good firm grip on the saw with both hands, the righthand on the rear handle, and the left hand on the fronthandle, when the engine is run-ning. Use a firm grip withthumbs and fingers encirclingthe chainsaw handles.A firm grip will help you reducekickback and maintain controlof the saw. Don’t let go.

3. Make sure the area in which youare cutting is free from obstruc-tions. Do not let the nose of theguide bar contact a log, branch,or any other obstruction whileyou are operating the saw.

4. Cut at high engine speeds.

5. Do not overreach or cut aboveshoulder height.

6. Follow manufacturer’s sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain.

7. Only use replacement bars andchains specified by the manu-facturer or the equivalent.

8. Reduced kickback bars and lowkickback chains are designedto reduce the risk of kickback injury. Ask your STIHL dealerabout these devices.

1. Do operate a chainsaw withone hand! Serious injury to theoperator, helpers, bystanders,or any combination of these persons may result from one-handed operation. A chainsawis intended to be used with twohands.

2. Do not operate a chainsaw whenyou are fatigued.

3. Use safety footwear; snug-fittingclothing; protective gloves; andeye, hearing, and head protect-ion devices.

Page 3: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

4. Use caution when handling fuel.Move the chainsaw at least 10 feet (3 m) from the fuelingpoint before starting the engine.

5. Do not allow other persons tobe near the chainsaw whenstarting or cutting with thechainsaw. Keep bystandersand animals out of the workarea.

6. Do not start cutting until youhave a clear work area, securefooting, and a planned retreatpath from the falling tree.

7. Keep all parts of your bodyaway from the saw chain whenthe engine is running.

8. Before you start the engine, make sure that the saw chainis not contacting anything.

9. Carry the chainsaw with the engine stopped, the guide barand saw chain to the rear, andthe muffler away from yourbody.

10. Do not operate a chainsaw thatis damaged, improperly adjusted, or not completely andsecurely assembled. Be surethat the saw chain stops moving when the throttle triggeris released.

11. Shut off the engine before setting the chainsaw down.

12. Use extreme caution when cutting small size brush andsaplings because slender mate-rial may catch the saw chainand be whipped toward you orpull you off balance.

13. When cutting a limb that is under tension be alert forspringback so that you will notbe struck when the tension inthe wood fibers is released.

14. Keep the handles dry, clean, and free of oil or fuel mixture.

15. Operate the chainsaw only inwell-ventilated areas.

16. Do not operate a chainsaw in atree unless you have been specifically trained to do so.

17. All chainsaw service, other thanthe items listed in the Owner’s

Manual maintenance instruc-tions, should be performed bycompetent chainsaw servicepersonnel.(For example, if improper toolsare used to remove theflywheel or if an improper toolis used to hold the flywheel inorder to remove the clutch, structural damage to theflywheel could occur and couldbe subsequently cause theflywheel to burst).

18. When transporting your chain-saw, use the appropriate chainguard (scabbard).

Other important safety precautionsare contained in the body of theOwner’s Manual.

! "

When using a chainsaw for loggingpurposes, refer to the Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 1910and 1928.

Page 4: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

Your STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from therear handle. As before, the chain brakecan be activated manually by pushingthe front hand guard toward the barnose or by inertia in certain kickback situations. In addition, the new system, which utilizes a different braking mechanism, is designed to stop chain rotation within a second of you letting goof the rear handle. The locked chain isnot released until you press down thethrottle trigger interlock lever again tooperate the throttle.

The QS braking system may be activated in three ways:

1 By inertia in certain kickback situations

2 Manually via the front hand guard3 Manually via the rear handle

(new function)

The activating mechanism for function 3 is integrated in the throttle trigger interlock lever (rear handle). One of the big advantages of this system is that the saw chain is locked when carrying the running saw by the fronthandle (with the rear handle released).

Due to the way it functions, the QS braking system may cause the saw to react in an unaccustomed manner. Toavoid personal injury during cutting, observe the characteristics that makethe STIHL 036 QS different from sawsthat do not have such a braking system. Before operating the STIHL 036 QS forthe first time, make sure you are familiarwith how the QS system works. Pay special attention to the chapters "ChainBrake" and "Starting" in this manual.

Page 8: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

The use of any chainsawmay be hazardous. The saw chain has manysharp cutters. If the cutters contact your flesh,

they will cut you, even if the chain is notmoving. At full throttle, the chain speedcan reach 45 mph (20 m/s). It is impor-tant that you read, fully understand andobserve the following safety precautionsand warnings. Read the owner’s manual the safety instructions periodically.

Pay special attention to the section on reactive forces.

Reactive forces, including kickback, canbe dangerous. Careless or improper useof any chainsaw may cause serious orfatal injury.

All safety precautions that are generallyobserved when working with an axe or ahand saw also apply to the operation ofchainsaws. However, because a chain-saw is a high-speed, fast-cutting powertool, special safety precautions must beobserved to reduce the risk of personalinjury.Have your STlHL dealer show you howto operate your chainsaw. Observe all applicable local safety regulations, standards and ordinances.

Minors should never be allowed to use achainsaw. Bystanders, especially

children, and animals should not be allowed in the area where a chainsaw is in use. Never let the saw run unattended.Store it in a locked place away from children and empty the fuel tank beforestoring for longer than a few days.

Do not lend or rent yourchainsaw without theowner’s manual. Be surethat anyone using yoursaw reads and under-

stands the information contained in thismanual.

These safety precautions and warningsapply to the use of all STIHL chainsaws.Different models may have differentparts and controls. See the appropriatesection of your owner’s manual for a description of the controls and functionof the parts of your model saw.

Safe use of a chainsaw involves

1. the operator 2. the saw 3. the use of the saw.

You must be in good physical conditionand mental health and not under the influence of any substance (drugs, alcohol) which might impair vision, dexterity or judgment.

Do not operate a chainsaw when youare fatigued. Be alert - If you get tired whileoperating your chainsaw, take a break. Tiredness may result in loss of control.Working with any chainsaw can be strenuous. If you have any condition thatmight be aggravated by strenuous work, check with your doctor before operating achainsaw.

Prolonged use of chainsaws (or othermachines) exposing the operator to vibrations may produce whitefinger disease (Raynaud’s phenomenon) orcarpal tunnel syndrome. These condi-tions reduce the hand’s ability to feeland regulate temperature, producenumb-ness and burning sensations and maycause nerve and circulation damage andtissue necrosis.

All factors which contribute to whitefingerdisease are not known, but cold weather, smoking and diseases or physical condi-tions that affect blood vessels and bloodtransport, as well as high vibration levelsand long periods of exposure to vibrationare mentioned as factors in the develop-ment of whitefinger disease. In order toreduce the risk of whitefinger diseaseand carpal tunnel syndrome, pleasenote the following:

- Many STIHL models are available with an anti-vibration ("AV") systemdesigned to reduce the transmissionof vibrations created by the engine

Page 9: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

and cutting attachment to the operator’s hands. An AV system isrecommended for those personsusing chain saws on a regular or sustained basis.

- Wear gloves and keep your handswarm. Heated handles, which areavailable on most STIHL power-heads, are recommended for coldweather use.

- Keep the saw chain sharp and the saw, including the AV system, wellmaintained. A dull chain will increase cutting time, and pressinga dull chain through wood will increase the vibrations transmittedto your hands. A saw with loosecomponents or with damaged orworn AV buffers will also tend tohave higher vibration levels.

- Maintain a firm grip at all times, but do not squeeze the handles withconstant, excessive pressures, takefrequent breaks.

All the above mentioned precautions donot guarantee that you will not sustainwhitefinger disease or carpal tunnel syndrome. Therefore, continual and regular users should monitor closely thecondition of their hands and fingers. Ifany of the above symptoms appear, seek medical advice immediately.

Clothing must be sturdyand snug-fitting, but allowcomplete freedom of

movement. Avoid loose-fitting jackets, scarfs, neckties, jewelry, flared or cuffedpants, or anything that could become entangled with the saw or brush. Wearoveralls or jeans with a reinforced cut retardant insert or cut retardant chaps.

Protect your hands withgloves when handlingsaw and saw chain.Heavy-duty, nonslipgloves improve your gripand protect your hands.

Good footing is mostimportant in chainsawwork. Wear sturdy bootswith nonslip soles.Steel-toed safety bootsare recommended.

To reduce the risk of injury to your eyesnever operate a chainsaw unless wear-ing goggles or properly fitted safety glasses with adequate top and side protection complying with ANSI Z 87.1.

Wear an approved safetyhard hat to protect yourhead. Chainsaw noisemay damage your hearing. Always wear sound barriers (ear plugs

or ear mufflers) to protect your hearing.Continual and regular users should havetheir hearing checked regularly.

Parts of the chainsaw; for illustrationsand definitions of the parts see the chapter on "Main Parts of Saw".

Never modify a chainsaw in any way.Only attachments and parts supplied bySTIHL or expressly approved by STIHLfor use with the specific STIHL saw models are authorized. Although certainunauthorized attachments are useablewith the STIHL powerhead, their usemay, in fact, be extremely dangerous.

!

Always stop the engine before putting achainsaw down or carrying it. Carrying achainsaw with the engine running is extremely dangerous. Accidental accel-eration of the engine can cause the chainto rotate. During operation, the power-head muffler and the material around itreach extremely high temperatures.Avoid touching the hot muffler, you couldreceive serious burns.

"# When carrying your saw byhand, the engine must be stopped andthe saw must be in the proper position.

$

Page 10: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

Grip the front handle and place the muffler away from the body.

The chain guard (scabbard) should beover the chain and the guide bar, whichshould point backwards. When carryingyour saw, the bar should be behind you. When removing the scabbard be carefulnot to contact the chain.

"%# When transporting in a vehicle, keep chain and bar covered withthe chain guard. Properly secure yoursaw to prevent turnover, fuel spillage anddamage to the saw.

!

Take off the chain guard and inspect forsafety in operation. For assembly, followthe procedure described in the chapter"Mounting the Bar and Chain" of yourowner’s manual.

STIHL Oilomatic chain, guide bar andsprocket must match each other in gauge and pitch. Before replacing any bar and chain, seethe sections on "Specifications", kick-back and the ANSI B 175.1-1991 chain-saw kickback standard in this manual.

Proper tension of the chain is extremelyimportant. In order to avoid improper setting, the tensioning procedure mustbe followed as described in your manual.Always make sure the hexagonal nut(s)for the sprocket cover is (are) tightenedsecurely after tensioning the chain. Never start the saw with the sprocket cover loose. Check chain tension oncemore after having tightened the nut(s)and thereafter at regular intervals (when-ever the saw is shut off). If the chain becomes loose while cutting, shut off theengine and then tighten. Never try totighten the chain while the engine is running !

Your STIHL chainsaw uses an oil-gaso-line mixture for fuel (see chapter "Fuel"of your owner’s manual).

Gasoline is an extremely flammable fuel.If spilled and ignited by a spark or otherignition source, it can cause fire andserious burn injury or property damage.Use extreme caution when handlinggasoline or fuel mix.

Do not smoke or bringany fire or flame near thefuel or the chainsaw.Note that combustiblefuel vapors may be ven-ted from the fuel system..

&

Fuel your chainsaw in well-ventilatedareas, outdoors only.Always shut off the engine and allow it tocool before refueling. Gasoline vaporpressure may build up inside the gas-tank of a two cycle engine depending onthe fuel used, the weather conditions, and the venting system of the tank. Inorder to reduce the risk of burns or otherpersonal injury from escaping gas vaporand fumes, remove the gas cap on theSTIHL product carefully so as to allowany pressure build-up in the tank torelease slowly. Never remove fuel fillercap while engine is running.

Select bare ground for fueling and moveat least 10 feet (3 m) from fueling spotbefore starting the engine. Wipe off anyspilled fuel before starting your saw, andcheck for leakage.

Page 11: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

Check for fuel leakage while refuelingand during operation. If fuel or oil leakageis found, do not start or run the engineuntil leak is fixed and spilled fuel hasbeen wiped away. Take care not to getfuel on your clothing. If this happens, change your clothing immediately.

Unit vibrations can cause an improperlytightened fuel cap to loosen or come offand spill quantities of fuel. In order to re-duce risk of fuel spillage and fire, tightenfuel cap by hand with as much force aspossible.

The screwdriver end ofthe STIHL combinationwrench or other similartool can be used as an aidin tightening slotted fuelcaps.

Your chainsaw is a one-person saw.Do not allow other persons to be nearthe running chainsaw. Start and operateyour saw without assistance. For specific starting instructions, see the appropriate section of the Owner’s Manual. Proper starting methods reducethe risk of injury. Do not drop start. Thismethod is very dangerous because youmay lose control of the saw.

There are two recommended methodsfor starting your chainsaw.

With the ()the chainsaw isstarted on the ground. Make sure thechain brake is engaged (see "Chain Brake" chapter in your owner’s manual)and place the chainsaw on firm groundor other solid surface in an open area.Maintain good balance and secure footing.

Grip the front handlebar of the saw firmlywith your left hand and press down. For saws with a rear handle level withthe ground, put the toe of your right footinto the rear handle and press down.

With your right hand pull out the startergrip slowly until you feel a definiteresistance and then give it a brisk, strongpull.

The recommended (forstarting your chainsaw allows you tostart the saw without placing it on theground. Make sure the chain brake is engaged, grip the front handle of thechainsaw firmly with your left hand.Keep the arm on the front handle in alocked (straight) position. Hold the rearhandle of the saw tightly between yourlegs just above the knees. On "QS" models, be careful not to disengage thechain brake by depressing the interlocklever with your leg. Maintain good balance and secure footing. Pull the starting grip slowly with your right handuntil you feel a definite resistance andthen give it a brisk, strong pull.

Page 12: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

Be sure that the guide bar and chain areclear of you and all other obstructionsand objects, including the ground. Whenthe engine is started, the engine speedwith the starting throttle lock engagedwill be fast enough for the clutch to engage the sprocket and, if the chain-brake is not activated, turn the chain. If the upper quadrant of the tip of the bartouches any object, it may cause kick-back to occur (see section on reactiveforces). Never attempt to start the chain-saw when the guide bar is in a cut orkerf.

On "QS" models, as soon as you pressdown the interlock lever, the chain brakeis disengaged and allows the chain torun at high speed until you blip the throttle trigger and release the interlocklever again.

When you pull the starter grip, do notwrap the starting rope around yourhands. Do not allow the grip to snapback, but guide the starter rope slowlyback to permit the rope to rewind pro-perly. Failure to follow this proceduremay result in injury to hand or fingersand may damage the starter mechanism.

&(+(

To reduce the risk of personal injuryfrom loss of control or contact with the running chain, do not use a saw with incorrect idle adjustment. At correct idlespeed, the chain should not rotate. Fordirections to adjust idle speed, see theappropriate section of your owner’s manual. If you cannot set the correct idlespeed, have your STIHL dealer checkyour saw and make proper adjustmentsor repairs. After adjusting a chain, start the saw, letthe engine run for a while, then switchengine off and recheck chain tension.Proper chain tension is very important atall times.

,

Operate the chainsaw under good visibility and daylight conditions only.

Your chainsaw producespoisonous exhaust fumesas soon as the combusti-ble engine is running. These gases (e.g. carbon

monoxide) may be colorless and odor-less. To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury from breathing toxic fumes, neverrun the chainsaw indoors or in poorly

ventilated locations. Ensure proper venti-lation when working in trenches or otherconfined areas.Even an oil mist (from chain lubrication)and sawdust are health hazards.

The muffler and other parts of the engine(e.g. fins of the cylinder, spark plug) become hot during operation and remainhot for a while after stopping the engine. To reduce risk of burns do not touch themuffler and other parts while they arehot. Operate the saw under good visibility and daylight conditions only.Don’t work alone. Keep within calling distance of others in case help isneeded.

Your chainsaw is equipped with a chaincatcher. It is designed to reduce the riskof personal injury in the event of a thrownor broken chain. From time to time thecatcher may be damaged or removed. To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not operate a chainsaw with a damaged or missing catcher.Inspect buffers periodically. Replace damaged, broken or excessively wornbuffers immediately, since they may result in loss of control of the saw. A "sponginess" in the feel of the saw, increased vibration or increased "bottoming" during normal operationmay indicate damage, breakage or excessive wear. Buffers should alwaysbe replaced in sets. If you have any questions as to whether the buffersshould be replaced, consult your STIHLservicing dealer.

-.

Page 13: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

Take extreme care in wet and freezingweather (rain, snow, ice). Put off thework when the weather is windy, stormyor rainfall is heavy. Clear the area where you are working.

Avoid stumbling on obstacles such asstumps, roots or rocks and watch out forholes or ditches. Be extremely cautiouswhen working on slopes or uneven ground. There is increased danger ofslipping on freshly debarked logs.

To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury to the operator or bystanders, never use the saw with one hand. You cannot control reactive forces andyou may lose control of the saw, whichcan result in theskating or bouncing ofthe bar and chain along the limb or log.

Even for those compact saws designedfor use in confined spaces, one-handedoperation is dangerous because the operator may lose control.

&Grip: Always hold the saw firmly withboth hands when the engine is running.Place your left hand on front handle barand your right hand on rear handle andthrottle trigger. Left-handers should follow these instructions too.

Wrap your fingers tightly around thehandles, keeping the handles cradled between your thumb and forefinger. With your hands in this position, you canbest oppose and absorb the push, pulland kickback forces of your saw without losing control (see section on reactiveforces). Make sure your chainsaw handles and grip are in good conditionand free of moisture, pitch, oil or grease.

Do not operate your chainsaw with thestarting throttle lock engaged. Cuttingwith the starting throttle lock engaged does not permit the operator proper control of the saw or chain speed.

Never touch a chain with your hand orany part of your body when the engine isrunning, even when the chain is not rotating. The chain continues to rotatefor a short period after the throttle triggeris released.

Do not cut any material other than woodor wooden objects. Use your chainsawfor cutting only. It is not designed for prying or shoveling away limbs, roots orother objects. When sawing, make surethat the saw chain does not touch any foreign materials such as rocks, fences, nails and the like.

Page 14: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

Such objects may be flung off, damagethe saw chain or cause the saw to kick-back.

In order to keep control of your saw, always maintain a firm foothold. Neverwork on a ladder, or on any other insecure support. Never use the sawabove shoulder height.

Never work in a tree unless you have received specific, professional trainingfor such work, are properly secured(such as tackle and harness system or alift bucket), have both hands free foroperating the chainsaw in a crampedenvironment and have taken properprecautions to avoid injury from fallinglimbs or branches.

Position the chainsaw in such a way thatyour body is clear of the cutting attach-ment whenever the engine is running.Stand to the left of cut while bucking.

Don’t put pressure on the saw when reaching the end of a cut. The pressuremay cause the bar and rotating chain topop out of the cut or kerf, go out of control and strike the operator or someother object. If the rotating chain strikessome other object, a reactive force maycause the moving chain to strike the operator.

%,,/,

Reactives forces may occur any time thechain is rotating. Reactives forces can be dangerous! In any chainsaw, the powerful forceused to cut wood can be reversed (andwork against the operator). If the rotating chain is suddenly stoppedby contact with any solid object like a logor branch or is pinched, the reactive

forces may occur instantly. These reactive forces may result in loss of control which may, in turn, cause seriousor fatal injury. An understanding of thecauses of these reactive forces may helpyou avoid loss of control.

The most common reactive forces are– kickback,– pushback,– pull-in.

0,/,#Kickback occurs whenthe upper quadrant of thebar nose contacts a solid object or is pinched.

The reaction of the cutting force of thechain causes a rotational force on thechainsaw in the direction opposite to thechain movement. This may fling the barup and back in an uncontrolled arc mainly in the plane of the bar. Under some cutting circumstances the bar moves towards the operator, who maysuffer severe or fatal injury.

Kickback may occur when the nose ofthe guide bar is pinched unexpectedly, unintentionally contacts solid material inthe wood or is incorrectly used to begina plunge or boring cut. It may also occur during limbing. The greater the force of the kickback reaction, the more difficult it becomes forthe operator to control the saw. Many factors influence the occurrenceand force of the kickback reaction. Theseinclude chain speed, the speed at whichthe bar and chain contact the object, theangle of contact, the condition of thechain and other factors.

The type of bar and saw chain you use isan important factor in the occurrenceand force of the kickback reaction.

Some STIHL bar and chain types are de-signed to reduce kickback forces. STIHL recommends the use of reduced kick-back bars and low kickback chains.

Section 5.12 of ANSI standard B 175.1–1991, sets certain performance and design criteria related to chainsaw kickback. To comply with section 5.12 of ANSI B175.1-1991:a) saws with a displacement of less than

3.8 cubic inches– must, in their original condition,

meet a 45° computer derived kickback angle when equipped withcertain cutting attachments.

– and must be equipped with at leasttwo devices to reduce the risk of kickback injury, such as a chain brake, low kickback chain, reducedkickback bar, etc.

b) saws with a displacement of 3.8 cubicinches and above

– must be equipped with at least onedevice designed to reduce the risk of kickback injury such as a chain brake, low kickback chain, reducedkickback bar, etc.

These kickback requirements do not apply to chainsaws fitted with bow guides.Use of bow guides may result inserious or fatal injury. See section

entitled "Bow Guides" of this manual. The computer derived angles for sawsbelow 3.8 cubic inch displacement aremeasured by applying a computer program to test results from a kickbacktest machine.

The computer derived angles of § 5.12 ofANSI B 175.1-1991 may bear no rela-tionship to actual kickback bar rotationangles that may occur in real life cuttingsituations. Compliance with § 5.12 of ANSI B 175.1-1991 does not automatic-ally mean that in a real life kickback thebar and chain will rotate at most 45° .

In order for powerheads below 3.8 cubicinch displacement to comply with thecomputed kickback angle requirementsof § 5.12 of ANSI B 175.1-1991 use onlythe following cutting attachments:

– bar and chain combinations listed ascomplying in the "Specifications" section of the Owner’s Manual or

– other replacement bar and chain combinations marked in accordancewith the standard for use on the powerhead or

– replacement chain designated "low kickback saw chain’’1).

There are potential powerheadand bar combinations with which lowkickback saw chains can be used whichhave not been specifically certified tocomply with the 45° computer derivedkickback angle of § 5.12 of ANSI B175.1-1991. Some low kickback chainshave not been tested with all powerheadand bar combinations.

1) "Low kickback saw chain" is a chainwhich has met the kickback perfor-mance requirements of § 5.12.2.4 ofANSI B 175.1-1991 (Safety Require-ments for Gasoline-Powered Chain-Saws) when tested on a selected repre-sentative sample of chainsaws below3.8 cubic inch displacement specified inANSI B 175.1-1991.

STIHL offers a variety of bars andchains.STIHL reduced kickback bars and lowkickback chains are designed to reducethe risk of kickback injury. Other chainsare designed to obtain higher cuttingefficiency or sharpening ease but mayresult in higher kickback tendency.

STIHL has developed a color codesystem to help you identify the STIHLreduced kickback bars and low kick-back chains. Cutting attachments withgreen warning decals or green labels onthe packaging are designed to reducethe risk of kickback injury. The matching

of green decaled powerheads under 3.8cubic inch displacement with greenlabeled bars and green labeled chainsgives compliance with the computedkickback angle requirements of ANSI B175.1-1991 when the products are intheir original condition. Products withyellow decals or labels are for users withextraordinary cutting needs and expe-rience and specialized training fordealing with kickback.

Please ask your STlHL dealer to properlymatch your powerhead with the appro-priate bar/chain combinations to reducethe risk of kickback injury. Green labeledbars and chains are recommended for allpowerheads. See your "STIHL Bar andChain Information" leaflet for details.

Use of other, non-listed bar/chain combi-nations may increase kickback forcesand increase the risk of kickback injury.New bar/chain combina-tions may be developed after publication of this litera-ture, which will, in combina-tion with certain powerheads, comply with § 5.12of ANSI B 175.1-1991. Check with your STI HL dealer for suchcombinations.

Do not mount a bow guide on anySTIHL chain saw.Any chainsaw equipped with a bowguide is potentially very dangerous. The risk of kickback is increased with abow guide because of the increasedkickback contact area. Low kickbackchain will not significantly reduce the riskof kickback injury when used on a bowguide.

STIHL recommends the use of the STIHLQuickstop chain brake on your power-head with green labeled reduced kick-back bars and low kickback chains.

To reduce the risc of enjury, stop usingthe saw immediately if the chain brakedoes not function properly.

Risk of injury! Take the saw to your localSTIHL Service Centre! Do not use thesaw until the fault has been rectified(see the section "Chain Brake")

8,/,

STIHL has developed a chain stoppingsystem designed to reduce the risk ofinjury in certain kickback situations. It is called a "Quickstop" chain brake. The Quickstop is available as standardequipment on your Stihl chain saw. When a kickback occurs, the guidebarmay rotate around the front handle. If the cutting position is such that theoperator’s left hand ist gripping the fronthandle behind the hand guard, and if theleft hand rotates around the front handleand pushes forward the front hand guard, which is the Quickstop activatinglever, this contact will activate the Quick-stop. The chain brake on most new model STIHL chain saws can also be activated by inertia. On QS" models, theinterlock lever and the throttle trigger onthe rear handle act as a third means ofactivation. See the chapter entitledchain brake" of your owners manual.

See the chapter entitled "Chain Brake"of your Owner’s Manual.

Never operate your chain saw without afront hand guard. In a kickback situationthis guard helps protect your left hand orother parts of your body. In addition, removal of the hand guard on a sawequipped with a chain brake will deactivatethe chain brake.

No Quickstop or other chain brakedevice prevents kickback. These devicesare designed to reduce the risk ofkickback injury, if activated, in certainkickback situations. In order for theQuickstop to reduce the risk of kickbackinjury, it must be properly maintainedand in good working order. See thechapter entitled " Chain Brake " and"Maintenance, Repair and Storing" ofyour Owner’s Manual. In addition, theremust be enough distance between thebar and the operator to ensure that theQuickstop has sufficient time to activateand stop the chain before potentialcontact with the operator.

An improperly maintained chain brakemay increase the time needed to stopthe chain after activation, or may notactivate at all.

Never run the chain saw above idlespeed for more than 3 seconds whenthe chain brake is engaged or the chainis pinched or otherwise caught in the cut.Clutch slippage can cause excessiveheat, leading to severe damage of themotor housing, clutch and oiler compo-nent and may interfere with the operationof the chain brake. If clutch slippage inexcess of 3 seconds has occured, allowthe motor housing to cool before pro-ceeding and check the operation of yourchain brake as described in the chapter

,,/,/STIHL green labeled reduced kickbackbars are designed to reduce the risk ofkickback injury when used with STIHLgreen labeled low kickback chains.

When used with other, more aggressivechains, these bars may be less effectivein reducing kickback, and may result inhigher kickback forces.

7!,,/,Some types of saw chain have speciallydesigned components to reduce the force of nose contact kickback. STIHLhas developed low kickback chain foryour powerhead.

A dull or improperly sharpened chainmay reduce or negate the effects of thedesign features intended to reduce kickback energy. Improper lowering orsharpening of the depth gauges or shaping of the cutters may increase thechance and the potential energy of akickback. Always cut with a properlysharpened chain.

Reduced kickback bars and low kick-back chains do not prevent kickback, but they are designed to reduce the riskof kickback injury. They are availablefrom your STIHL dealer.

Even if your saw is equipped with aQuickstop, a reduced kickback barand/or low kickback chain, this does noteliminate the risk of injury by kickback. Therefore, always observe all safety precautions to avoid kickback situations.

%,,/,

The best protection from personal injurythat may result from kickback is to avoidkickback situations:

1. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands and maintain a secure grip. 2. Be aware of the location of the guide bar nose at all times. 3. Never let the nose of the guide bar

contact any object. Do not cut limbs with the nose of the guide bar. Be especially careful when cutting small, tough limbs, small size brush and saplings which may easily catchthe chain.

4 Don’t overreach. 5. Don’t cut above shoulder height. 6. Begin cutting and continue at full

throttle.

7. Cut only one log at a time. 8. Use extreme caution when

re-entering a previous cut. 9. Do not attempt to plunge cut if you are not experienced with these

cutting techniques.10. Be alert for shifting of the log or other

forces that may cause the cut to close and pinch the chain.

11. Maintain saw chain properly. Cut with a correctly sharpened, properly

tensioned chain at all times.12. Stand to the side of the cutting path of the chainsaw.

Pull-in occurs when the chain on thebottom of the bar is suddenly stoppedwhen it is pinched, caught or encountersa foreign object in the wood. The reaction of the chain pulls the sawforward and may cause the operator tolose control.

Pull-in frequently occurs when the bumper spike of the saw is not held securely against the tree or limb andwhen the chain is not rotating at fullspeed before it contacts the wood.

Use extreme caution when cutting smallsize brush and saplings which may easilycatch the chain and pull you off balance.

%51. Always start a cut with the chain

rotating at full speed and the bumper spike in contact with the wood.

2. Pull-in may also be prevented by using wedges to open the kerf or cut.

/,#

Pushback occurs when the chain on thetop of the bar is suddenly stopped whenit is pinched, caught or encounters a foreign object in the wood. The reactionof the chain drives the saw straight backtoward the operator and may cause lossof saw control. Pushback frequentlyoccurs when the top of the bar is used forcutting.

%/,

1. Be alert to forces or situations thatmay cause material to pinch thechain on the top of the bar.

2. Do not cut more than one log at a time.

3. Do not twist the saw when withdraw-ing the bar from a plunge cut or underbuck cut because the chain canpinch.

=

Felling is cutting down a tree.

Before felling a tree, consider carefully allconditions which may affect the directionof fall, including:

The intended direction of the fall.

The natural lean of the tree.

Any unusually heavy limb structure.

Surrounding trees and obstacles.

The wind direction and speed.

Always observe the general condition ofthe tree. Inexperienced users should never attempt to cut trees which are decayed or rotted inside or which are leaning or otherwise under tension. There is an increased risk that such treescould snap or split while being cut andcause serious or fatal injury to the operator or bystanders.

Also look for broken or dead brancheswhich could vibrate loose and fall on theoperator. When felling on a slope, theoperator should stand on the uphill sideif possible.

First clear the tree base and work areafrom interfering limbs and brush and clean its lower portion with an axe.

Then, establish a path of escape (") andremove all obstacles. This path shouldbe generally opposite to the planned direction of the fall of the tree () andabout at a 45° angle. An alternate path(") must also be selected. Place all toolsand equipment a safe distance awayfrom the tree, but not on the escape path.

If the tree has large buttress roots, cutinto the largest buttress vertically first(horizontally next) and remove theresulting piece.

Felling a tree that has a diameter greaterthan the length of the guide bar requiresuse of either the sectioning felling cut orplunge-cut method. These methods areextremely dangerous because they involve the use of the nose of the guidebar and can result in kickback. Only properly trained professionals should attempt these techniques.

For the sectioning method make the firstpart of the felling cut with the guide barfanning in toward the hinge. Then, usingthe bumper spike as a pivot, repositionthe saw for the next cut.

Avoid repositioning the saw more thannecessary. When repositioning for thenext cut, keep the guide bar fully enga-ged in the kerf to keep the felling cutstraight. If the saw begins to pinch, inserta wedge to open the cut. On the last cut,do not cut the hinge.

5(

Timber having a diameter more than twice the length of the guide bar requiresthe use of the plunge-cut method beforemaking the felling cut.

First, cut a large, wide felling notch. Make a plunge cut in the center of thenotch.

The plunge cut is made with the guidebar nose. Begin the plunge cut by applying the lower portion of the guidebar nose to the tree at an angle. Cut untilthe depth of the kerf is about the same asthe width of the guide bar. Next, alignthe saw in the direction in which the re-cess isto be cut.

With the saw at full throttle, insert the guide bar in the trunk.

Enlarge the plunge cut as shown in illustration.

There is an extreme danger of kickbackduring the limbing operation. Do notwork with the nose of the bar. Be extremelycautious and avoid contacting the log orother limbs with the nose of the guide bar.

Do not stand on a log while limbing it –you may slip or the log may roll.

Start limbing by leaving the lower limbs tosupport the log off the ground. When underbucking freely hanging limbs, apinch may result or the limb may fall, causing loss of control. If a pinch occurs, stop the engine and remove the saw, by lifting the limb.

Be extremely cautious when cuttinglimbs or logs under tension (spring poles). The limbs or logs could springback toward the operator and cause lossof control of the saw and severe or fatalinjury to the operator.

log. Make sure the log will not rolldownhill. If on a slope, stand on theuphill side of the log. Watch out for rolling logs.

2. Cut only one log at a time.

3. Shattered wood should be cut very carefully. Sharp slivers of woodmay be caught and flung in the directionof the operator of the saw.

4. When cutting small logs, place logthrough "V" - shaped supports ontop of a sawhorse. Never permitanother person to hold the log. Never hold the log with your leg orfoot.

In order for the chain brake on yourSTIHL chainsaw to properly perform itsfunction of reducing the risk of kickbackand other injuries, it must be properlymaintained. Like an automobile brake, achainsaw chain brake incurs wear eachtime it is engaged.(see chapter "Chain Brake").The amount of wear will vary dependingupon usage, conditions under which thesaw is used and other factors. Excessivewear will reduce the effectiveness of thechain brake and can render it inoperable. For the proper and effective operation ofthe chain brake the brake band andclutch drum must be kept free of dirt, grease and other foreign matter whichmay reduce brake performance on thedrum.

For these reasons, each STIHL chain-saw should be returned to trained personnel such as your STIHL servicingdealer for periodic inspection and servicing of the brake system accordingto the following schedule:

Heavy usage - every three months, Moderate usage - twice a year, Occasional usage - annually.

The chainsaw should also be returnedimmediately for maintenance wheneverthe brake system cannot be thoroughlycleaned or there is a change in its operating characteristics.

Additionally, the daily maintenanceschedule for your chainsaw set forth inyour STIHL Owner’s Manual should bestrictly followed.

Store chainsaw in a dry place and awayfrom children. Before storing for longerthan a few days, always empty the fueltank.

Use regular branded unleaded gasolinewith a minimum octane rating of90 ROZ (U.S.A./Canada: pump octanemin. 89!). If the octane number of theregular grade gasoline in your area islower, use premium unleaded fuel.Fuel with a lower octane rating mayresult in preignition (causing “pinging”)which is accompanied by an increase inengine temperature. This, in turn, increases the risk of piston seizureand damage to the engine.

The chemical composition of the fuel isalso important. Some fuel additives notonly detrimentally affect elastomers(carburetor diaphragms, oil seals, fuellines etc.), but magnesium castings aswell. Take care when handling gasoline.Avoid direct contact with the skin andavoid inhaling fuel vapour(see “Safety Precautions”).

The canister should be kept tightlyclosed in order to avoid any moisturegetting into the mixture.

The fuel tank and the canister in whichfuel mix is stored should be cleanedfrom time to time.

( $#)!

Only mix sufficient fuel for a few dayswork, not to exceed 3 months of storage.Store in approved safety fuel-canistersonly. When mixing, pour oil into thecanister first, and then add gasoline.

Page 31: Stihl 036 QS Chain Saw - STIHL – The Number One … STIHL 036 QS is equipped with an additional chain braking system activated by removing the hand from the rear handle. As before,

Your STIHL 036 QS features an additional chain braking system. This system is designed to activate the chainbrake when you remove your right handcompletely from the rear handle.

Since the mechanisms are different for(1.) inertia or manual activation by means of the front hand guard and (2.)activation by means of the rear handle, there will be a difference in elapsed timebefore the chain comes to a stop. Activation by means of the front hand guard is designed to stop the chain within a fraction of a second. The rearhandle activating mechanism, on the other hand, is designed to stop the rota-tion of the chain within approximatelyone-second after release of the rearhandle.

*+

In order to reduce the risk of personal injury, make sure you are familiar withhow the additional chain braking systemworks before cutting with the 036 QS forthe first time. Observe and become accustomed to the characteristics thatmake this saw different from other sawsthat do not have a rear handle brakingsystem. See also the chapter "Starting"in this manual.

It is advisable to fit the intake air prehea-ting kit* if you use your saw in extremelycold conditions (temperatures below -10 °C /+14 °F, in powder or driftingsnow).

When fitted, the kit ensures that onlyheated air is drawn in from around thecylinder - it prevents air filter and carburetor icing.

The rotary shutter for carburetor prehea-ting must be fully open when the intakeair preheating kit is fitted.

or sooner if the wear marks on the sprocket are deeper than approx. 0.5 mm (1/64") since this would reducethe life of the chain.

Check wear marks:

You can use gauge * 0000 893 4101to check the depth of the wear marks.

#, • Use a screwdriver to remove

the E-clip.• Take off the washer and rim

if wear marks are severe, fit a newclutch drum:

• Contact your STIHL dealer for assistance.

• Pull clutch drum and needle cageoff the crankshaft - clean the crankshaft stub and needle cage, and lubricate with STIHL grease(tube 0781 120 1111).

Reassemble with new rim sprocketand, if necessary, new clutch drum.

• Fit rim sprocket with cavities facingoutward.

• Refit the washer and E-clip on thecrankshaft.

Use only original STIHL clutch drums to ensure correct operation of the chainbrake.

For periods of about 3 months or longer:

• Drain and clean the fuel tank in awell ventilated area.

• Run engine until carburetor is dry -this helps prevent the carburetordiaphragms sticking together.

• Remove the saw chain and guide bar, clean them and protect with corrosion inhibiting oil.

• Thoroughly clean the machine -pay special attention to the cylinder fins and air filter.

• If you use a biological chain and bar lubricant, e.g. STIHL Bioplus, completely fill the chain oil tank.

• Store the machine in a dry and highor locked location - out of thereach of children and other unauthorized persons.

A properly sharpened chain slicesthrough wood effortlessly and requiresvery little feed pressure.

Do not work with a dull or damagedchain as it will increase the physicaleffort required, produce unsatisfactoryresults and a higher rate of wear.

for cracks in the links and damagedrivets - replace any damaged or worn parts ofthe chain and match the new parts to theshape and size of the original parts.

It is absolutely imperative tocomply with the angles and dimensionsspecified below. If the - and inparticular if the depth gauge is set toolow - there is a risk of increasedkickback of the chainsaw, with resulting.

.See “Technical Data” for the permittedchain pitches.

The chain pitch (e.g. 3/8) is marked onthe depth gauge side of each cutter.

Other files have the wrong shape andcut.

Select file diameter according to chainpitch - see table at the end of thischapter.

You must observe certain angles whenresharpening the chain cutters

As these requirements can be met onlyafter sufficient and constant practice:

!*

A file holder must be used for manualresharpening of Super chain. The correctfiling angle is marked on the file holder.

%STlHL filing gauge* (see table)A universal tool for checking the filingand side plate angles, depth gauge setting and cutter length. Also cleans theguide bar groove and oil inlet hole.

%

• If you use a file holder or the FG 1:Leave the chain on the bar.

• Clamp the bar in a vise if necessary.• Lock the chain - push hand guard

forward• To rotate the chain - pull hand

guard against front handle• Sharpen chain frequently, take

away as little metal as possible -two or three strokes of the file areusually enough

• Always file from the inside to theoutside of the cutter.

• The file only sharpens on the forward stroke -lift the file off the cutter on the back-stroke.

• Hold the file & for allchain types (at right angle to side ofguide bar) and file according to theangles marked on the filing tool.

• Avoid touching the tie straps and drive links with the file.

• Rotate the file at regular intervalswhile filing -this avoids one-sided wear.

• Use a piece of hardwood to removeburrs from cutting edge.

• Check angles with the filing gauge.

If the cutters are not the same length, they will have different heights. This makes the chain run roughly and cancause it to break.

Find the shortest cutter and then file allother cutters back to the same length. This can be very time consuming - it isbest to have it done in the workshop onan electric grinder.
