Stewardship Reflections

In today’s second reading, St. James urges us to be “Doers of the

Word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22). Being a “Doer of the

Word” means being a good steward of the Gospel; meditating on

the sacred scriptures and putting the teachings of Jesus Christ

into action in our day-to-day lives. Whenever we are uncertain as

to what decisions to make or actions to take as good stewards of

the Gospel, St. James reminds us: We can never go wrong if we

resist popular values that are not compatible with the Gospel

and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed or

poor. Being a steward of the Gospel is not taking one single

action. It means embracing a lifestyle as a follower of Jesus

Christ. What can we do this week to be better “Doers of the

Word?”

THE FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

The earliest document commemorating this feast comes from the sixth century. The birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary announced joy and the near approach of salvation to the lost world; therefore this festival is celebrated by the church with praise and thanksgiving. It was a mystery of sanctity, and distinguished by singular privileges. Mary was brought forth into the world, not like other children of Adam, infected with original sin, but was born pure, holy, beautiful, and glorious, adorned with all the most precious graces which became her who was chosen to be the Mother of God. She appeared indeed in the weak state of our mortality; but in the eyes of heaven she already transcended into the highest realm in purity, brightness, and the richest ornaments of grace. Nazareth was the native place of the Blessed Virgin. The holy parents of Mary were Saints Joachim and Anna. “Christ is our Lord; Mary, our Lady, as she is always called. She has borne Christ, the King of heaven and earth: who can hesitate to call her Queen of heaven and earth, especially as she is raised in heaven above all the Saints?” The whole Church addresses her in the following language: “Thou glorious and blessed Virgin! Our Lady, our Intercessor, our Mediator!” She is our Lady; she is also a light, or “the enlightened,” and more so than all the Saints, because she possessed a much clearer perception of God and of divine mysteries than all the other Saints: for, she was more closely united with the Light that illumines all mankind. She is a light, because, according to the teachings of Saint Anselm and many others, she revealed to the Apostles and Evangelists, many things which she knew of the life and actions of our Saviour, and thus instructed them, and gave them light in matters of faith. She is a light, because she obtained, for so many who sought it by her intercession, wisdom and knowledge in spiritual matters, and does the same still to this hour. She is a star of the sea, because she guides us, by her intercession and her virtuous example, safely through the dangers of this world into the haven of eternal bliss. We pray Thee, O Lord, grant to Thy servants the gift of heavenly grace: as the child-bearing of the blessed Virgin was the beginning of our salvation, so may the devout celebration of her Nativity accord us an increase of peace. Amen.
