DESiGN StAteMent

My designs explore the utility and beauty of products for the contemporary setting. Often do we see compromise in the usefulness of a product for the sake of good form or vice versa; my goal is to bring the two elements into perfect equilibrium. My works are also subject to a test that pays close attention to current environmental standards, from material use to the proposed end of life scenario. Additionally, I have designed for each product to retain maximum created value with minimum production intensity and thus allowing for a much larger profit margin. When held, my products grace the user with elements of lasting elegance; The intent is to promote the appreciation of intelligently-designed products with true and honest value.

Inspired by the use of railings as temporary seats, this simple bench is designed to replicate that same seating function. Bolted into the ground, the bench should enable passing users to rest and recuperate for a limited amount of time in high traffic areas. This makes the bench ideal for public parks, airports, and even small shop fronts. The unobstructive and streamline form alludes to the fleeting nature of travel, while remaining perfectly stationary. It is composed of pywood and raw steel.

rAck The Rack, fabricated from scrap and waste material of other projects, adheres to Nordic design principles of simplicity and enduring modernism. It is intended to be utilized as an ungrounded hanger for coats, hats and scarves. Apart from its function, its elegant form resembles a sapling in the mid-winter season. It is composed of bending plywood, turned cedar balls, maple veneer, and nylon threaded inserts.

THE SuitcAse To address the issue of disposability in the death of a suitcase, my design centers on consumer assembly and disassembly. The user, with an screw driver, can repair their own suitcase with ease. Constructed so that components can be replaced cheaply, damaged parts are singular materials and can be recycled. The features also allows the suitcase to be flatpacked, for the convenience of delivery, point-of-purchase, and portability. The product is prototyped with Eco-Felt, aluminum, steel, polypropylene sheets, rubber, and nylon.

RECEPTACLE The goal of this project is to design a method to deter and to counteract the scavenging behavior of North American Herring Gulls on beach receptacles at Rockaway Beach Park. The solution itself however is not exclusive to a specific public space and can be used elsewhere across New York City parks. This design seeks to use an efficient manufacturing process (rotational molding) whilst con-tinual observations should determine health externalities for us humans, the gulls, and the surrounding environment. This service product will be manufactured with the materials UV-treated LDPE and stainless steel to withstand harsh outdoor weathering and prolonged use.
