The connection process

• Submit application to New Supplies on a ENA form with relevant plans

• Application sent to the relevant department • We clarify any additional information • We prepare the Connection Offer Letter which

included the connection and reinforcement costs • You need to accept the Offer Letter and pay the

deposit • The works are started Top Tip - If you need a cost indication you can request a Budget Estimate free of charge without applying for a full offer or have a discussion with your planner

Connections teams

• LV generator connections – Local LV planner • Domestic generation • Smaller commercial generation • Up to roughly 200kW export

• 11kV generation - Local 11kV planner • Typically greater 100kW export • Depending on constraints up to 5MW export

• 33kV and 132kV connections - Primary System Design • At least 1MW export • Based in Bristol, Cardiff, Tipton or East Midlands Airport

Alternative Connections Due to the increasing amount of generation being developed in a number of constrained areas, alternative connections are being offered which will enable a greater amount of generation to be connected when the network is able to absorb this energy. The cost, complexity and application of the curtailment can be tailored to meet the needs of the connecting generator. The benefit of these connections not limited to a reduction in connection costs, they can also reduce timescales for connection.

Connecting Generation to the Grid Alternative Connections

TIMED

• Generation curtailed within specific times

• Sub 1MVA • Modelled seasonal

capacity variations • Localised control only • No comms • May have for voltage

constraint • Non-optimised

SOFT-INTERTRIP

• Releases pre-fault capacity with trip facility

• 11kV and 33kV • Real-time monitored

values • Small clusters of

generation or simple pinch points

• Existing monitoring with localised control

ACTIVE NETWORK MANAGEMENT

• Fully optimises capacity based on all constraints

• Management of generation using LIFO principles

• Real-time granular control of output

• Requires new Active Network Management control and monitoring systems

Connecting Generation to the Grid

Timed – Case Study • 350kW River Hydro

scheme • 10MW PV on constrained

circuit • 2MW capacity DG

headroom estimated • Connection times: - October to March = Full

350kW export - Apr & Sept = 150kW

10am to 4pm, full 350kW at other times

- May to Aug = Nil export 10am to 4pm, full 350kW at other times

Intertrip – Case Study • 18MW Mixed Biomass /

Energy from Waste, PV and Wind

• 9MW firm plus 9MW constrained

• Hybrid conventional and smart solution developed

• Trip signal from Spalding on voltage rise or reverse power

• Enmac analogues to be transmitted to customer to allow them to “throttle back” DG to avoid trip signal.

Active - Case Study • Offers issued • Offshore Wind • Uplift to 94.7MVA

output (from 90MVA) • Deploys ANM

equipment at Skegness and Boston

• Utilises Dynamic Line Rating on 132kV double circuit line

- Multiple £m conventional solution required reconductoring of Boston/Skegness – not quoted at customer request

Conclusion

Distributed Generation is currently being adopted on an unprecedented scale

Connecting Generation to the Grid

There is a wealth of information on WPD’s website to help with new connections. Alternative connections have been implemented to help reduce the cost due to reinforcement for new generators.
