All staff at T. A. Wilson Academy will improve student mathematics achievement by increasing our proficiency level (1 or 2) from 0% to 20% on the 2010 MME by focusing instruction on number sense & numeration and geometry & measurement (most deficient areas in the 2007 and 2008 MME assessments) for our economically disadvantaged students who comprise 88% of our entire student population.

Strategy One

The Alpha math teacher will teach geometry concepts with the Alpha Geometry program.

Page 5: Steve Lieder TA Wilson Academy Mathematics Goal. All students will improve mathematical skills

The Alpha Geometry program is available as part of our Alpha Math Class this quarter .

Diagnostic tests are being conducted this week, the beginning of Quarter 3.

For the first time at TA Wilson, we are also offering 2 classes of Geometry.

At TA Wilson, there continues to be a need for emphasis on higher level mathematics concepts.

The College Readiness Benchmark for Mathematics is 19. In 2008, 1 student scored 19 or higher. 53% of the students scored 13 or higher.

In 2009, no student scored 19 or higher, but 66% of the students scored 13 or

higher.

Is the objective implemented to the

expected level based on the plan?

Only 1 teacher will be implementing the Alpha Geometry program and it will not be the same teacher who is teaching the Geometry class

The Alpha Geometry course is available for qualified students for 1 hour per day for both the 3rd and 4th quarters in 2010

Are the students making progress based on the

original goal?

Student Achievement Data will be collected from the results of the MME in March 2010

Because we are providing additional instructional opportunities in geometry and measurement, our students should improve their

overall mathematics score.

Strategy Two All teachers will, on a daily basis, begin their class with math- focused questions developed by the math department.

Page 11: Steve Lieder TA Wilson Academy Mathematics Goal. All students will improve mathematical skills

Kevin Blair has assumed responsibility for this objective by designing a daily math Challenge.

Page 12: Steve Lieder TA Wilson Academy Mathematics Goal. All students will improve mathematical skills

Our daily math challenge will provide mathematical tasks that:

Prompt student thinking, discussion, and collaboration

Hold potential for students to access important mathematical ideas

Create opportunities for students to explore and articulate mathematical ideas independently

Build student capacity for mathematical thinking and reasoning

Is the objective implemented to the

expected level based on the plan?

All of the teachers who have a first hour class will participate in this project.

The students will spend 15 minutes per day on this activity.

Are the students making progress based on the

original goal?

This project begins next week, so we do not have student data to report .

Daily work on mathematical problems should build mathematical capacity and confidence among the TA

Wilson Students.

Strategy Three Our teachers will collaboratively create projects that involve families and community to further encourage students to utilize math skills outside the classroom.

TA Wilson Academy has partnered with the Church World Service Kit Program to assemble hygiene kits to make the difference between sickness and health for struggling families who are facing natural disasters, violence, or grinding poverty.

Items for the kits are being collected from January 25-February 12.

Page 17: Steve Lieder TA Wilson Academy Mathematics Goal. All students will improve mathematical skills

Email was sent to all staff. Each class was given one type of item to collect for the project. One teacher volunteered to bring Ziploc bags for packing the materials. Mathematical tasks: What percentage of students have participated in the project? What is our room goal?  To date, what portion have we

collected? How many kits should our school complete based on our

population? How many more kits do we need, to reach our goal?

This project reinforces the concept that mathematical skills are used in everyday life. All students need to acquire skills in number sense and numeration.

Page 18: Steve Lieder TA Wilson Academy Mathematics Goal. All students will improve mathematical skills

Is the objective implemented to the

expected level based on the plan?

All teachers who have a second hour class are participating. All students are invited to participate

Items are being collected daily in the class at the beginning of the hour for 3 weeks.

Are the students making progress

based on the original goal?

Students like to participate in a philanthropic cause that makes their own situations pale in comparison. Mathematical facts provide that realization.

Using mathematical skills in conjunction with service learning, builds positive attitudes about math and

increases students’ awareness of the importance of math in everyday life.

More data must be collected to determine the effectiveness of the strategies that we have/will implement.

We will need to measure student success in geometry and in alpha geometry.

Page 20: Steve Lieder TA Wilson Academy Mathematics Goal. All students will improve mathematical skills

We have only one math objective which denotes two areas of concern: Number sense & Numeration Geometry and Measurement

Perhaps we should have two objectives with specific strategies to implement for each objective.
