“Memorable Events – Without the Stress”

took us on a field trip to dine out. I loved it! And I have been hooked ever since. Planning and

coordination, and the final satisfaction of seeing clients and their guests enjoy their special day.

“Memorable Events – Without the Stress”
Overview:
Sterling Events by Design is located in the northwest section of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area.
This is an under-represented area for the type of services we will provide. This location also lends
itself to obtain clients along the Rio Grande corridor from Albuquerque to Santa Fe.
This is a fee-for-service, wedding and event planning business, with potential growth based on the
increased population growth of the suburbs of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The potential for growth
also exists as time becomes more valuable to the consumer who belongs to dual-income earning
household.
In the long-term, social media, technology, and the increased access to self-help planning tools
definitely will continue to have an impact on the event planning industry. We can expect to see more
and more collaboration between venue, planners, and vendors to offer the client the most competitive
pricing and services
Through on-going research, industry conferences, training, collaboration with other service providers,
hiring key personnel, and maintaining a realistic review of best practices, lessons learned, and
strategic planning, this company will be able to provide excellent customer service, maintain a profit,
and reserve the potential for growth.
Goals and Objectives
The Goals and Objectives will align with the Core Values of the company, focusing on the following
areas:
- Increased Brand Recognition
- On-going Customer Service Improvement
- Increased Revenue
- Hiring and Training of Staff
- Community Service Projects
Marketing Strategy: The Marketing Strategy will be developed based on market analysis, current trends, surveys, vendor
relationships, and professional development.
The Marketing Strategy will include the following:
- Professional web design - Bridal Fairs - Advertising thru radio and publications - Postcard bulk mailings - Meetings with vendors and venue
managers - Sponsorships
- Monthly Social Media Plan - Special Event Booths - Wedding planning workshop & webinars - Networking thru professional
organizations - Community service projects - Word of Mouth
Specific Market:
My business location will be a major contributing factor to my strategic plan. Located in the far
northwest corridor of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area, I will be able to provide services to a very
diverse population group. Located between the largest city in our state, several Native American
communities, and smaller communities in rural areas, my services should be well received.
Conveniently located within a twenty-file mile radius are venues that range from a five-star resort
complete with golf courses, casinos, horse-back riding, and hot air balloon rides, to the unique historic
Spanish Hacienda style bed and breakfast.
This location is ideal to attract destination wedding seekers who are looking for the ultimate
southwest vacation experience. Offering breathtaking views, art, culture, dance, and the heritage of
the Hispanic, Anglo, and Native American cultures that cannot be found anywhere else in the United
States.
This location will provide much needed services to the population in the area. Traditionally clients in
this area have had to travel as far as fifty miles to obtain similar goods and services for their events.
Currently there are only one other event planner within twenty-five miles of my location, and only
focuses on corporate events. This area has seen tremendous growth in the past fifteen years, and
continues to grow at a steady pace.
Owner’s Professional Background:
“The personal satisfaction of the planning and design of an event, and the joy it brings to the client is
the motivation for making every event a success. Having planned several events in the past twenty
years, I have the tenacity, talent, and foresight it takes to see an event through to the end.”
My personal background, experience, skills, and strengths include:
Co-owner of a small business for five years, excellent organizational skills, leadership skills, a
background in accounting, federal grants management, contract negotiation, event organization, fund
raising, project management, and team building.
Having lived in this area all of my life, I am very familiar with the diverse
population groups, their cultures and traditions, and the economic make-up of
the population in my target market.
I look forward to opportunities for collaboration, education, and personal growth on a regular basis. I
am also always interested in sharing my knowledge with other people, and would love to give back to
my community on a regular basis
Distinctive Competencies: I have an eye for design, and I am intuitive to the event planning process.
I am also a great listener, and can remain calm under stressful circumstances.
Other interests include: basic art design, fabric arts, cake decorating, graphic arts, and planning
community service events.
The combination of my business location, education, and experience should give me a competitive
edge in this market.

The Wedding Industry
“Wedding ceremonies serve several purposes and they are often a cherished moment in a couple's
history. A wedding ceremony is often utilized as a public display of marriage vows and of the couple
entering into the marital contract. For many couples, the focus of the wedding ceremony, is on their
commitment and love for each other.
In addition to stating and agreeing to their wedding vows, they have the love and support of their
family and friends. Guests help to celebrate the couples’ commitment to each other. Wedding ideas
and practices are rooted in historical practices.” – Marriage Laws.com
No matter what your motivation is for having a wedding, the wedding industry in the United States is
huge. In 2017 the average cost of a wedding was approximately $35,000 resulting in a $72 billion
dollar industry.
The average couple is engaged about fourteen months, and the average age for couples getting
married for the first time is 27 for women, and 29 for men.
While some things remain the same like a white wedding gown, tuxedos, bridesmaids, and beautiful
bouquets, wedding trends have seen a break in some of the traditional wedding standards.
Bridesmaids mix it up to reflect their unique personalities in dress style, and colors.
Donut walls, cupcake stations, and desert bars may be served alongside a smaller version of a
traditional wedding cake.
Destination weddings are becoming more and more popular.
Social media has been monumental in changing the way a couple chooses their wedding venue and
vendors.

Professional Standards of Certification
“Beautiful weddings don’t just happen. They are the result of
careful planning, timing, and collaboration.” - The Owner
You may be wondering what the benefits are of hiring a Certified Wedding and Event Planning
Specialist vs. doing it yourself, or using “the lady your mom knows down the street”.
Obtaining a certification means your event planning specialist has spent numerous hours learning
how to develop a professional event planning business. As many as 300 hours of professional
education conducted by a qualified instructor may be required to obtain the CEU’s necessary to
obtain their certification.
Learning the planning process inside and out, building a realistic budget, developing marketing
materials, learning how to work with the client and listening for the detail of what they want,
developing a timeline, wedding design…these are just a few of the subjects covered in the
certification classes.
By the end of course the student knows if they have the calm demeanor it will take to work in this
industry. Internships offer a real hands-on experience for students before they start their own
business.
Once a student, always a student fits this industry as event planners who want to stay “in-the-know”
will take continuing education classes, attend conferences, and conduct market analysis on a regular
basis in order to bring their clients the latest in trends, and competitive pricing for their services.
A Certified Wedding Planner will strive to make your event a success, not only because their
business depends on it, but because they possess the real passion and dedication it takes to see the
event through from beginning to end.
Portfolio of Previous Events
Weddings and Special Events:
80th Tea Party/Kentucky Derby Birthday Celebration
Event Coordinator for an 80th birthday party with a Tea Party/Kentucky Derby theme. For this event I secured
the space, created the design and table decorations, designed the invitations and handled RSVP’s. This
space had a certified kitchen which allowed for catering and food preparation. Food was served buffet style.
Entertainment included a Scottish band, and games for the guests. Approximately 100 guests attended this
party, who were encouraged to wear their best Kentucky Derby outfit. Planning time was approximately six
months. This event was a huge success.
80th Birthday Celebration
Event collaborator for a surprise 80th birthday celebration. This event was held at a local restaurant for
approximately 80 guests, and was a successful surprise for the guest of honor. For this event I secured the
venue and entertainment, designed the invitations and guest menu, and helped with decorations. I
collaborated on games and prizes for the guests to partake in. This event included hiding out-of-town guests
until the party was underway. Planning time was approximately three months. Everyone had such a good
time.
50th Wedding Anniversary
Event coordinator for a beautiful 50th wedding anniversary party that was held at a local historic hotel. This
party accommodated approximately 100 guests. The event was semi-formal. For this event I handled all of the
design, planning, invitations, vendor coordination, payments, etc. A buffet dinner was followed by dancing to a
DJ who served as Master of Ceremonies. The couple was surprised by a trip to Hawaii from their family.
Planning time for this event was approximately nine months, and was a wonderful success.
Wedding Reception
I helped coordinate the events for an evening wedding reception for approximately 80 people for a bride-on-a
budget. The event was held in a historic building that was restored to host special events. We did most of the
work ourselves. The design, centerpieces, decorations, space design, catering, etc. were all handled by
myself and one other person. I made the table runners, and helped make some of the decorations, which had
a shabby-chic motif. I also managed the set-up and break-down of the dinner buffet. This event included a
D.J./MOC and a bar. Planning time for this event was approximately six months. What a lovely evening
event!!
Family Reunion – Destination Yellowstone
Coordinated information and reservations for a one-week family reunion to Yellowstone National Park. This
was a destination event for approximately 30 people. I developed invitations, managed RSVP’s, made maps,
developed newsletters, handled group mailings, etc. Unfortunately several family
members were unable to attend. Those who did attend had an awesome trip!
Fundraising Events:
Arts-N-Craft Fair Fundraising Benefit
Lead Organizer. As the lead organizer for this project, I secured and large gym for the location and sold
approximately 60 booth to arts-n-crafts fair participants and vendors who participated in this two-day funding
raising event. This project included advertising, project management, vendor contacts, space analysis, team
assignments and coordination. Our team provided a concession stand, entertainment, raffle items, and
awards. The net profit from this event was approximately $6,000. All proceeds helped to fund a local middle
school band trip to Washington, DC.
Phone Book Distribution
Collaborated on phone book distribution to an entire small city. This resulted in the distribution of over 5,000
phone books. For this project I helped secure the contract for the entire city, planned out delivery routes for
the most efficiency. I also helped to pick up the product, organize the delivery teams, deliver the product, etc.
The profits from this project helped pay for two families to take a trip to Disneyland.
Philanthropy:
Art-in-the-Schools
Lead Organizer for my community elementary school. Art in the School is a non-profit art education
organization designed to help students look at and discuss great works of art. For this on-going event, I had to
attend one art history class, and one art project instruction class. Secure the materials, and present the
information to one or more elementary level classes. The students were then able to participate in creating
their own piece of art in the classroom. As lead for this group, I helped to organize an end-of-the year art show
for approximately 100 students and their parents.
Other:
In addition to the events listed above, I have helped to organize several dinner parties, anniversary parties,
birthday parties, BBQ’s, etc. for family and friends. I always strive to do something special for each event,
whether it be themed decorations, games, or unique food displays.

payments to your vendors. 23. What is the most unique wedding you have ever planned? Probably a last-minute country wedding
for a bride on a budget. The wedding was at the courthouse, and the reception was held in an orchard, complete with hay bales for the guests to sit on. We only had a few weeks to put it together, but it turned out to be one of the best weddings I have ever been to!
24. Tell us about a mishap that has occurred, and how you handled it? A common mishap is when the
bride or bridesmaids step on their dress and tear a seam or the hem. I keep a wedding day repair kit on hand with things like safety pins, thread and needle, duct tape, soda water, smelling salts, etc. LOL! You just never know what is going to happen!

Wedding Fun Facts and Traditions
Have you ever wondered why the bride tosses the bouquet? Or where the idea of having a best man came from?
Maybe you have had the opportunity to attend a wedding that embraced different cultural traditions from your own, and
you wondered why they included certain ceremonies into their wedding.
Here are some fun facts around weddings and the traditions celebrated in various countries.
Bachelor Party
This tradition goes back to ancient history. As early as the 5th century B.C., it is believed that the ancient Spartans were the first to make a celebration out of the groom’s last night as a single man. Spartan soldiers held a dinner in their friend’s honor and made toasts on his behalf. Since then, the events have generally grown more raucous.
Best Man
Runaway brides have been around for quite some time, because the best man's former duty was to make sure the
bride didn't escape during the ceremony. Sometimes he was even asked to kidnap her. Yes, kidnap her. Reference
to the “best man” didn’t always refer to the groom’s best friend, but rather the best man to get the job done!
Bridesmaids
In early Roman times, bridesmaids would line up to form somewhat of a protective shield while walking the bride to
the groom's village. The group of women, who were similarly dressed, were expected to intervene if any vengeful
paramours tried to hurt the bride or steal her dowry
Egypt
Egyptian women pinch the bride on her wedding day for good luck.
Germany
In Germany, newlyweds must put their bond to the test b working together to saw a long in half in front of all of their
guests. This is done to show the bride and groom’s ability to work together and face the challenges they may face
throughout their marriage.
Giving Away the Bride
The tradition of the father giving away his daughter has its roots in the days of arranged marriages. Daughters in those times were considered their father's property. It was the father's right to give his child to the groom, usually for a price. Today a father giving away his daughter is a symbol of his blessing of the marriage.
All that Gold
Seventeen tons of gold are made into wedding rings ear year in the United States.
Guatemala
At a Guatemalan wedding reception, the mother of the groom breaks a white bell to welcome the newlyweds to the party.
The bell, filled with flour, rice, and grains, is meant to bring luck and prosperity.
India
In a traditional Indian wedding, the bride’s sisters will play a trick on the groom by stealing his shoes once he enters the
wedding tent. The groom must bribe the sisters to return his shoes before he exits.
Japan
San-san-kudo is a beloved Japanese tradition where the bride and groom take three sips each from three flat sake cups,
after which their parents do the same, bonding the families together.
Kenya
As the bride and groom leave the village, the father of the bride spit on his daughter’s head and chest so as not to jinx
their good fortune.
Milk Bath
In Morocco, women take a milk bath to purify themselves before their wedding day.
Navajo
To begin a traditional Navajo wedding ceremony, the groom and his family and friends traditionally enter a Hogan and sit
on the west side facing the east. They enter the Hogan clockwise.
Ring Finger
Engagement rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because in ancient Rome it was once thought that a vein
in that finger led directly to the heart.
Sapphires
In the symbolic language of jewels, a sapphire in a wedding ring means marital happiness.
Scotland
Taken out on the day before their wedding, the bride and groom are plied with alcohol, and covered in treacle, ash,
feathers, and flour by friends and family. The celebratory mess was originally carried out to avoid evil spirits and bring
good luck.
Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and a Sixpence in Your Shoe
"Something old" represents the bride's link to her family and the past. "Something new" represents hope for good fortune and success in the future. "Something borrowed" usually comes from a happily married woman and is thought to lend some of her good fortune and joy to the new bride. "Something blue" is a symbol of love, fidelity, and purity of the bride. A sixpence in her shoe is to wish the bride wealth in her future life.
South Africa
It is traditional for the parents of the bride and groom to bring fire from their own fireplaces to the home of the newlyweds.
The bride and groom use the flames provided to ignite the hearth in the new home together.
Tossing the Garter and Bouquet
Originating in England, women used to try to rip pieces of the bride’s dress and flowers in order to obtain some of her
good luck. To escape from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away. The garter was also used as an
alternate piece of attire to avoid having the bridal dress ripped. As far back as the 14th century in Europe and France, it
was considered good luck if you were to catch the garter.
Tying the Knot
Celtic, Hindu, and Egyptian weddings all embrace tying the bride and groom’s hands together to demonstrate the couple’s
commitment to each other and their new bond as a married couple.
The Veil
Ancient Greeks and Romans thought the veil protected the bride from evil spirits. Brides have worn veils ever since.
Wedding Cake
The tradition of a wedding cake comes from ancient Rome, where revelers broke a loaf of bread over a
bride's head for ferti l ity's sake. Prior to the 18 t h century, wedding cakes were considered a luxury item
and a sign of social status. The bigger the cake the higher the social standing . Wedding cakes have
been present at wedding ceremonies for centuries. The wedding cake was originally known as the
bride’s cake therefore the color white became common because the cake needed to reflect the bride.
The cake was originally intended to be distr ibuted among the guests by only the bride because
consuming the cake would ensure ferti l ity. .
Wedding Destinations
Las Vegas is the top wedding destination in the United States with over 100,000 wedding a year, followed by Hawaii at
25,000 weddings a year.
The White Wedding Dress
Throughout history brides from around the world have worn varying styles and colors of the wedding dress as it was
deemed appropriate to their cultural traditions and social status. Although white was worn by brides in previous history, it
became more popular in the 19th century after Queen Victoria of England broke with the traditional colored gown and
opted for a white wedding gown, trimmed with lace and orange flower blossoms as a sign of fertility.
Although we often associate the white wedding gown as a sign of purity, history shows that white was originally worn as a
sign on one’s wealth, worn primarily by nobility.

Marriage License Requirements
The State of New Mexico Marriage License Requirements are listed below. You will want to be sure and contact your local County Clerk’s office well in advance of your wedding to fill out your Wedding License Application form, and file for your Marriage License.
To marry in New Mexico, the two parties may not be related within the degree prohibited by the State of New Mexico (NMSA 40-1-7). Both parties must appear in person and bring valid picture identification to the County Clerk’s Office to apply for a marriage license in New Mexico.
Both must be at least 18 years of age. Both need current legal pictured identification, or birth certificate. Both applicants need to be present. Blood tests are not required. Both applicants need proof of Social Security number (if an individual has been issued a SSN), such as
a Social Security card, W-2 tax form, or tax return. Fee is $25, which can be paid with cash or the following credit cards: Discover, Visa, MasterCard and
American Express. Payable at the time of application. Contact your local County Clerk’s office to confirm their acceptable form of payment.
Marriage licenses are issued and valid immediately. Marriage licenses do not expire. If Under 18
o Parental consent if 16 or 17 years of age. o Court order if 15 years of age.
Are you considered legally married if you only obtain a marriage license?
o No. In the State of New Mexico you have to have a ceremony conducted by an officiant, and the
marriage license has to be signed by the officiant, the bride and groom, and two witnesses. You will then need to file your marriage license with the County Clerk’s office, typically within 90 days of the date of your wedding.
Who can officiate at your wedding? Anyone who is licensed, ordained, or certified to perform a ceremony can marry you.
IMPORTANT: If you are planning a destination wedding outside of New Mexico, be sure to confirm if the state or country you are getting married in will issue a license that is considered valid in New Mexico. Your local County Clerk’s office can help you with this information.

Civil Ceremony Information Sheet
A Civil Ceremony is a non-religious, legal marriage ceremony presided over by a legal officiant rather
than a religious one.
Civil wedding ceremonies have become more and more popular over the last twenty years.
Many couples opt for a civil ceremony for budgetary reasons, convenience, time restrictions, etc. A
civil ceremony allows for couples of different religious backgrounds to have a ceremony without the
religious requirements of either person’s faith.
Civil ceremonies can be performed anywhere, the courthouse, a beach, a park, a hotel, etc., and are
usually presided over by a judge, justice of the peace, or an officer of the court.
The format of a Civil Wedding Ceremony is similar to a traditional ceremony, with a procession or call
to order, opening remarks, exchange of vows and rings, pronouncement of marriage, and sealed with
a kiss!
Contact your local County Clerk’s office to apply for a marriage license
You will need to have a copy of your marriage license, and two witnesses with you for the civil
ceremony. The marriage license will need to be signed by the officiant, the bride and groom, and two
witnesses. All marriage licenses have to be filed through the County Clerk’s office within ninty days
of your wedding.
If you are getting married at the County Courthouse, schedule an appointment through the County
Clerk’s office. Most judges do not charge a fee, but confirm with your local County Clerk’s office
before your wedding day.
Please contact your local County Clerk’s office if you have any additional questions.

Bridal Shows and Expos are a wonderful way to connect with vendors,
review products and services, try samples, attend a fashion show

I would highly recommend that you attend at least one bridal show while you are

Ways to Save Money:
- Give yourself plenty of time to plan!
- Do your research – when are vendors most likely to offer the best discounts, etc.
- Map out your purchases, and take advantage of tax-free days, off-season discounts, discount
coupons, etc.
- Rent a house for your wedding and lodging
- Don’t serve a sit-down meal. If you have your reception at a restaurant create your own limited
guest menu. Most restaurants will work with you.
- Use a seating chart vs. individual seating cards.
- Find a unique venue that will allow for your wedding and reception, including your choice of
vendors.
- Don’t pay for colored invitation liners – purchase colored envelopes instead.
- Use a postcard for guest RSVP’s – saves on printing and postage.
- Don’t get married on a Saturday. It is the most popular and expensive day of the week to get
married on.
- Elope and throw a big party for your friends and family when you return
- Use more foliage in bouquets and floral arrangements. Adds volume, color, and costs less.
- Find a DIY centerpiece you love and invite the bridal party to a DIY day three months before
the wedding. You can hang out with your friends a save on your centerpieces.
- Take a survey of skills your family and friends have who wouldn’t mind contributing to your big
day. Everyone loves a wedding.
- Don’t overlook e-Bay and other web-sites that brides use to resale their perfectly good
wedding items.
- Do your own thing, and keep your wedding within your budget. Today’s weddings are all about
being individualized. Pinterest and other wedding web-sites have great ideas that can help.
