The best things about birthday parties are that

you get to see friends and family, reminisce about the

past, catch up on what’s new in people’s lives, and

talk about the future. You also get presents.

This next year, Matthaei Botanical Gardens and

Nichols Arboretum will be having a birthday—a really

big one. We’ll be turning 100 in February, and we plan

to celebrate all year long. In preparation, we’ve been

collecting family stories about our past and planning

for our future. We want to be prepared for whatever

the next century brings. What follows is a brief history

of Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum

as well as what we envision for our future.

Although the 1817 charter for the University

of Michigan authorized the forming of a botanic

garden along with other “useful literary and scientifi c

institutions,” it took nearly a century for the University

to do so. In 1897, Pharmacology Professor Julius

Schlotterbeck established a small teaching garden

of medicinal and economic plants on campus, but

the garden soon proved inadequate on the crowded

campus where it was prone to trampling by students.

Botany professor Frederick C. Newcombe picked up

the cause and actively campaigned to the Regents for

investment in a botanic garden. He noted the value of

such a facility to numerous departments on campus

as well as to the community. In 1906 the University

accepted a gift of 30 acres on Geddes Road from

Walter and Esther Nichols which was combined with

additional land owned by the City of Ann Arbor in

order to create a jointly owned botanical garden and

arboretum. The noted landscape gardener Ossian Cole

Simonds (U-M, 1878) was engaged to create a plan

for the property. In February 1907, Botany Professor

George P. Burns, who was well recognized for his

tireless efforts to create a park system for the City

of Ann Arbor, was appointed as Director.

A key feature of the desire for a botanical garden

and arboretum was that of having a conservatory

and related greenhouses for the study and display of

plants not hardy in our Michigan climate. Although

a small greenhouse was established next to the

Superintendent’s cottage, the Geddes site provided

little fl at land for the construction of a larger facility

and series of outdoor research beds. Consequently,

the botany and pharmacology faculty sought a new

site suitable for such facilities. In 1914 a site on

Iroquois Street was purchased, new greenhouses were

constructed, and the move occurred two years later.

The Geddes site was transferred to the newly created

Department of Landscape Design and the property

offi cially renamed as Nichols Arboretum in 1923, with

Professor Aubrey Tealdi as director. In the years that

followed, Tealdi oversaw much of the development

that we currently know as the Arboretum: the Peony

Garden (which opened in 1927), the large shrub

collection near Geddes with its spring display of

lilacs, and the collections of various trees and shrubs

throughout the Arb set against native woodland

backdrops. Under Harlow Whittemore, who became the

director in 1934, a team of some 30 W. P. A. workers

We currently attract more than 200,000 visitors yearly

and provide meeting places for dozens of community

environmental and garden organizations. We serve

as living classrooms and research laboratories for

both the University and broader community with our

diverse offerings, classes, and programs. As a public

garden, we provide a place of beauty and serenity in

the heart of a great University and an increasingly

urbanized region.

So, what about the future…Among the great challenges to our generation are a

growing loss of biodiversity and habitat destruction,

immense changes to the world’s climate, and a rising

lack of ecological literacy in the general population.

There is an increasing need for places of hope that

encourage environmental action and showcase

examples of what people can do in response.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum

are such places. As a leading public garden and living

museum, we currently attract people who want to

learn about plants, gardens, and the environment

and we will continue to do so. We are working to

enhance our role as a bridge between the University

and broader community where both come together

to learn how to address these vexing environmental

problems, with particular focus on the Great Lakes

region. With our University connections, we are

uniquely poised to serve as a hands-on laboratory

for redefi ning our relationship to nature and

showcasing examples of sustainable technology and

environmental stewardship through our gardens,

collections, facilities, and natural areas.

As we place greater emphasis on demonstrations

of environmental sustainability and fi eld teaching,

we will continue to create beautiful, restorative

places that are an antidote to the stressful, harried

world. We will also maintain the integrity of our

historic gardens and landscapes while making

them more accessible to a broader cross section

of the public. We will continue to offer a variety of

educational programs and events, utilizing the rich

array of creative talents found within the University

and community. Our goal is to create and maintain

places and to offer programs that delight while

encouraging people to be more sensitive, aware,

and engaged in practices of environmentally-sound

horticulture and sustainability.

To accomplish these goals, we are developing a

strategic plan for the next fi ve years that will enable

us to evaluate existing programs and activities,

laid out over three miles of trails. The Alex Dow

Field was given to the University by Detroit Edison in

1943 to round out the 123 acres that now comprise

the Arboretum.

For many years the Botanical Gardens fl ourished

at the Iroquois site under the leadership of Director

Harley Hatcher Bartlett and a strong tradition of

teaching and research was established. By the

mid 1950s, encroachment by development around

the property and the general inadequacy of the

property for expanding facilities for classroom use

led Professor A. Geoffrey Norman, who had become

director in 1955, to seek once again a new site for the

Botanical Gardens. Generous gifts from the Frederick

and Mildred Matthaei family that included 200 acres

of land on Dixboro Road and cash to purchase the

adjoining Matteson Farm allowed the establishment

of today’s Matthaei Botanical Gardens. The noted

architect, Alden B. Dow, was engaged to design the

complex of conservatory, auditorium, greenhouses,

classroom and research labs that were completed in

1965. Landscape architects Edward A. Eichstadt and

Carl Johnson of Eichstadt and Grissom Associates

developed designs for the construction of entry

roads and Willow Pond, and Professor Chuck Cares

provided advice on early planting schemes. The

96-acre Horner-McLaughlin Nature Area was added to

the Botanical Gardens care as a wildfl ower sanctuary

in 1965 and Mud Lake Bog was transferred to the

Gardens in 1970.

The development of community-oriented public

outreach programs was greatly aided by the formation

of Friends organizations. At the urging of Director Erich

Steiner, the Friends of Matthaei Botanical Gardens was

established in 1974 to support the Botanical Gardens

fi nancially and provide a variety of public programs.

A similar group, the Friends of Nichols Arboretum,

was established in 1989. Both Friends organizations

have helped the Botanical Gardens and Arboretum

extend outreach efforts into the community and

established an array of traditions that have included

fl ower shows, plant sales, peony parties, as well as

lectures, workshops, and other activities focused on

the environment and gardening. In 2004, the University

combined Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols

Arboretum as one administrative unit, reporting

directly to the Provost. The Friends organizations

were offi cially merged in early 2005.

Today, Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols

Arboretum provide many benefi ts to the community

and state. We are cherished as places that greatly

enrich the lives of people not only at the University

and in Ann Arbor, but throughout Southeast Michigan.

2 3

Caring for nature, enriching lives

set clear priorities across our entire organization, and

monitor our progress. We have identifi ed four general

themes for focusing our actions. They include:

• Expanding University partnerships for teaching

and research

• Growing the Friends organization

• Building our relationships with community

partners

• Improving our attractions for visitors and

providing rich learning opportunities.

About the presents: we’ve received quite a few

over the past year as you will discover from the pages

that follow. We’ve already put a lot of these to use.

As you’ll learn, we’ve had a busy year launching new

programs and continuing important traditions. We’ve

also made some exciting changes to our facilities,

gardens, and natural areas improving accessibility,

interpretation, and environmental sustainability. We

believe we’ve made visitors feel more welcome and

their experiences with us more enjoyable.

As we turn 100, we don’t feel particularly old

and tired. Instead, we feel energized, ready to

move forward, ready to use the past 100 years as

a launching pad for the next. We hope you’ll come

celebrate with us!

2005-2006 highlights

PlacemakingWhat are the elements of a rich community place?

According to the Project for Public Places, a great

place includes sun, shade, places to rest, amenities

both grand and unassuming, and a wealth of different

activities. The Arb has already been nominated as one

of America’s great places (http://www.pps.org/great_

public_spaces/). At the Gardens, we’re taking simple

steps to make our site a more satisfying place to spend

time. This includes seating on the terrace, west porch

and west lobby, Conservatory, and in the new picnic

grove. We’ve moved our library to a more accessible

location, installed a lobby display system, and provided

more wayfi nding and interpretive information within

and outside the building.

Natural Areas Steward ProgramWe are delighted to begin a new natural areas steward

program with the signing on of an Arb steward and

a Kirk’s Fen steward at the Gardens. Modeled on

the City of Ann Arbor’s Natural Areas Program, our

stewards will actually take ownership for restoring and

maintaining specifi c areas of our properties, including

supervising volunteers to remove invasives, monitoring

the ecosystems, and conducting prescribed burns.

We plan to expand the program to all of our natural

areas within the next fi ve years. A robust stewardship

program allows the City of Ann Arbor to restore far

more acreage than would be possible with paid staff,

and the stewards act as advocates and educators in

the community.

Hands-On Museum Alliance Summer CampThe Botanical Gardens was host to two weeks of

summer camp for fi rst through third graders this

past year. Campers learned about the world of bugs

in “Creepy Crawlers.” In “From Earth to Art,” the kids

turned plants into paper and made dyes out of plants.

One of our education program interns taught at the

camp. We had the pleasure of hearing children’s voices

in the halls and gardens every day, while the kids

enjoyed learning about nature in the gardens and

wilds of our property.

Michigan Math & Science Scholars ProgramTalented high school students participated in a

summer fi eld study course at the Arb and Gardens

this year through the Michigan Math & Science

Scholars Program. Students learned about current

vegetation and its stability in time; past site history

(post-settlement, pre-settlement) and future

prospects. The class, which included domestic

and international students, worked with plant

identifi cation and survey skills on-site. We hope this

will be a fi rst step in regularly offering spring fi eld

classes here for U-M students.

River LandingWe were proud to dedicate the Arboretum‘s River

Landing on Huron River Day, July 9, 2006. Thousands of

visitors are enjoying the benches, canoe landing, steps

and picnic tables at the newly restored riverfront site.

This collaborative project by the University of Michigan,

SE Michigan Resource Conservation and Development

Council, Environmental Consulting and Technology,

the City of Ann Arbor, the Washtenaw County

Road Commission, the Washtenaw County Drain

Commission, the Huron River Watershed Council and

others was a tremendous accomplishment, replacing

unsightly concrete blocks with erosion-preventing,

beautiful native landscapes. Many thanks to the

donors who made this possible.

Earth DayThousands of visitors came out to Matthaei Botanical

Gardens to enjoy Earth Day in April. This free family-

friendly event featured hands-on activities from local

non-profi t organizations, live animal demonstrations,

alternative fuel vehicles, entertainment, and an

opportunity to explore miles of nature trails and

breathtaking outdoor gardens. Thanks to the event

sponsors, SECURE Eco Shred and Whole Foods Market.

MiSoWe are proud to provide a permanent home for the

Michigan Solar (MiSo) House, a multidisciplinary

project of U-M graduate students and faculty

(http://www.misohouse.org/). MiSo House “seeks

to create an affordable and customizable home

which produces a surplus of renewable energy

that will effectively redefi ne comfortable living in

a manner feasible for generations into the future.”

Students entered the house in the Solar Decathlon in

Washington DC, an international competition designed

to promote innovation in energy-effi cient building

to demonstrate the benefi cial possibilities of solar

powered living. It is now installed at MBG as part of

our new display garden area, where its functioning

will continue to be monitored and it will be available

for public viewing.

ShakespeareJune 2006 brought us another great Shakespeare in

the Arb production: Love’s Labours Lost. Director and

Residential College faculty-member Kate Mendeloff

updated this lesser-known work, bringing out the

timeless humor in this political satire. The audience

roamed the Arb, following the troupe of student and

professional actors to natural settings choreographed

to underscore the play’s content. As always, the play

sold out when the weather was fair, so next year,

come early!

Digital KamiDigital Kami (digitalkami.org) is a series of four

interactive installations at the Nichols Arboretum

“intended to restructure visitors’ ideas about land

management, ecology issues, and the natural

landscape.” Funded by the Duderstadt Center’s

Digital Commons Program, the exhibit included a

shrine installation in the Peony Garden, an invasive

species light display along the Ridge Trail, and

documentary footage of the prairie burn in

Dow Prairie displayed on monitors in the prairie.

“Together these installations point to the idea of

making invisible or typically unnoticed processes of

ecology and land management visible or audible,”

according to the Digital Kami web site. The

team members were U-M graduate students:

Russ Kuhner, Media Arts and Music; Carrie Morris,

Art and Design; Mike Young and Tao Zhang, Natural

Resources and the Environment.Visitors enjoy lunch on the terrace

Accessible trail in the making

Intern Mary Walton working on Children’s Garden design

Intern Chris Smith mapping locations for upcoming signs

Question (to our readers): What do these Arb and Gardens projects have

in common?

• Design for the new children’s garden,

Great Lakes endemics garden, bonsai garden

and virtual bonsai exhibit

• Our Centennial logo and calendar

• Shakespeare production management

• Green roof demonstration exhibit

• Hands-On Museum summer camp and Michigan

Math & Science Scholars fi eld course

• Plantings and picnic table installation in the

Norman Picnic Grove

• A living willow domed lodge

Answer:All are projects and activities of the three dozen

student interns who brought their talents, enthusiasm,

skills, and intelligence to MBGNA this year. We

used more work-study workers and student interns

throughout the academic year, and this summer, we

grew our cohort to 30. Our previous all-time high

was closer to a dozen. With such a dramatic change,

nobody knew how the experience was going to unfold.

We asked our student workers and staff what they

thought.

Interns: our secret ingredient

Question (to our interns):What did you think of your summer job at MBGNA?

Answer:“I’m working outdoors, getting paid,

and helping the environment.

What could be better?”

Brian Colleran, horticultural assistant

“It’s awesome. I thought it would be

years before something I designed

would actually be built.”

Mary Walton, Children’s Garden Designer

“I love doing something different

every day. It’s never the same job

two days in a row.”

Dave Lipkovich, horticultural assistant

“I liked getting to know the high school students.

They were enthusiastic about the class, and we had

a lot of fun.”

like thinking about the project budget, and fi tting

the design into an existing location.”

Eric Bauer, Bonsai Garden designer

“It’s great to feel like my work is actually going to be

used. I’ve had a lot of freedom to develop a project

within the parameters laid out for me.”

Jenny Senko, graphic designer

Question (to our staff):What did you think about having student interns

to help out this year?

Answer:“It’s been fantastic! They’ve been able to handle

new projects independently. I don’t know how we

would have done it without them.”

Catriona Mortell, Education Program Coordinator

“I love seeing the activity level around here.

I’ve gotten good supervisory experience, and we’ve

had enough staff to do new projects as well as take

care of our regular work. We’ve accomplished a

huge amount this year.”

Paul Girard, Horticulturalist

“It’s been great getting to know a new group

of people. The interns have done good work,

and a lot of it.”

Jeff Walters, Horticulturalist

8

“Projects are unfolding right in front of my

eyes. I like the energetic feeling in the hallways.

I was able to hand off an entire project to a

summer intern, who took it from a glimmer of

an idea to a high quality product in just a

few weeks.”

Karen Sikkenga, Associate Director

“It’s been fun having such a diverse group of

people here. It’s interesting to hear about the

experiences and expertise these students

have picked up all over the world.”

April Pickrel, Visitor Services Program Coordinator

“They’re wonderful. So full of ideas and

enthusiasm. You can see why they’re the cream

of the crop in their high schools. The only thing

I don’t like about it is saying goodbye. I can’t

imagine work life without them.”

Joan Wolf, Development Associate“…

We’ve ac

complished a huge amount this year.”

A catalyst gift

As Nichols Arboretum neighbors, Tom Porter, Kathleen Crispell and their

children delight in the charms of the Arb. It’s hard to tell where their backyard

ends and the Arboretum begins when looking out the fl oor to ceiling windows

from their lovely Orchard Hills home. Tom shares wonderful stories of the fox

family in residence within their window view. Kathleen enjoys long walks along

the Arb’s hill-hugging trails. Their appreciation of this campus and community

treasure as well as their commitment to conservation and sustainability led

to a desire to help. After some discussion, they chose to focus on one of the

Arboretum’s Michigan Difference Campaign goals.

The result was a generous gift from the Porter Family Foundation that

became the catalyst for the successful Nichols Arboretum Riverfront

Restoration project. With the Porter gift in hand, the Riverfront Restoration

Project became a more attractive giving opportunity for others. In the end,

the project became a dynamic collaboration of in-kind support from local

and federal government. Hundreds of volunteer hours followed as did private

individual donations.

The Riverfront Restoration accomplished a variety of goals. The riverbank is

now stabilized. The erosion control methods used have been demonstrated and

will continue to inform people through our education outreach. New plantings

will mature and add to the beauty of one of the Arb’s favorite destinations.

Attractive fencing, a canoe landing, benches, picnic tables and wide granite

steps permitting river

access improve visitor’s

experience while

maintaining the site.

And it all was made

possible by the Porter

Family Foundation’s

donation that became

a catalyst for others.

Tribute gifts come in many shapes and sizes.

Most often people donate trees or benches.

But sometimes donors fi nd a connection with a

specifi c Botanical Gardens and Arboretum goal

and contribute in a way that furthers a project and

honors their loved ones.

Dr. Rudy Reichert (below, left) connected with

our goal to improve the Matthaei Botanical

Gardens Green Trail and made a very generous

gift toward the project to honor his wife Sue.

Sue Reichert was a Botanical Gardens docent

and volunteer who loved introducing children to

the wonders of the natural world. The new Sue

Reichert Discovery Trail is sure to delight children

of all ages with features such as hillside-mounted

viewing scopes, casts of animal tracks near mud

fl ats where passers-by can compare the casts

with live tracks, a live-rooted willow igloo-shaped

lodge that will leaf out in the spring and provide a

fantasy-fort. The most notable feature of the Sue

Reichert Discovery Trail is accessibility. The trail

will provide an alternative woodland experience

for people with limited mobility. Instead of a hard

asphalt or gravel path, people in wheelchairs will

be able to feel the dips and give of a softer but

well-constructed grassy surface. We look forward

to joining with the Reichert family to dedicate the

Sue Reichert Discovery Trail in spring 2007.

Another example of an unusual Tribute Gift is

the donation made by Drs. Rebecca and William

Horvath (below, right). As a child, Becky Horvath

grew up playing along the Huron River with

her brother Bill. So when she and her husband

learned of the effort to restore the riverfront

in Nichols Arboretum, they worked with us to

fi nd a meaningful way to honor her brother and

sister-in-law and further the restoration effort.

This proved to be a tribute gift that provided the

private funds needed to complete the project.

A boulder now rests on the riverbank near the

new canoe landing. A plaque is embedded in the

boulder with a poem Becky wrote to mark the

signifi cance of the Arboretum to their entire family

and to honor Bill and Trudy Badger. On July 9, 2006

the Horvath and

Badger families

joined with

other donors,

volunteers, and

staff to celebrate

the River Landing

dedication.

A gift for our future

Ann Arbor attorney and yoga instructor, Sally Rutzky, had been

thinking about establishing her estate plan when she attended a

lecture last year and heard Bob Grese’s vision for the future of the

Botanical Gardens and Arboretum. Furthering a place of hope that

encourages environmental action and showcases examples of what

people can do to address a growing loss of biodiversity and habitat

destruction resonated with Sally.

As a natural areas enthusiast and

activist, Sally was looking for a non-profi t

organization that provides long-term

investment stability and addresses

the environmental needs of Southeast

Michigan. As an integral part of the

University of Michigan, the Gardens and

Arboretum enjoys the promise of future

stability and, as an active participant in

campus and community life, its roots are

local. Sally found a perfect fi t for her gift

intention and made a bequest designated

to the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and

Nichols Arboretum Natural Areas.

Ms. Rutzky notes the vision for the future of this organization

is broad, and that although the natural areas piece fi ts her

concerns, others may fi nd resonance with creating beautiful

restorative places, conserving the integrity of historic gardens

and landscapes, building more accessible sites, and continuing

educational opportunities. Sally hopes her actions will serve as a

model for others to invest in our future through a planned gift to

the Botanical Gardens and Arboretum.
