Place the provided X-ray filter squarely in the center of the X-ray source collimator. (This will enable you to take a flat-field image, which is a necessary part of the calibration procedure. After calibration, remember to remove the X-ray filter from the collimator before taking pan images (non-flat-field images). A good place to store this filter is to tape it to the back of the PanX. Disable the PanX radiation.

Select “Calibrate” and left click on “Calibrate Mode”. Open “Calibrate” again and make sure that “Calibrate Mode” is checked. Then open “Properties”. The “Device Driver Name” should be CDR-320 if the operating system is Microsoft XP or 2000 or CDRPAN.VXD if the operating system is Microsoft 98. The “Scan Direction” should be Left to Right. The “Image Width” should be approximately 3200 pixels and the “Image Height” should be 1603 pixels. The “Initial Timeout” defaults to 15 seconds. This parameter allows 15 seconds to start motion. If you require a longer period of time to start motion then you can change this parameter to the amount of seconds you require. Example: Change the “Initial Timeout” (sec): from 15 to 30. The “Early Stop Timeout (sec):” should be set at 7. The “Mapping” should be set at Linear. (Nothing should be checked on the right side of “Panoramic Acquisition Control Properties” screen). Click “OK”. Turn radiation off on the PanX

Next, click the yellow button to acquire a “New Image”. Depress and hold the exposure hand switch (you have 15 seconds to begin this before the PanX times out) until imaging cycle is complete. You will receive a PANOACQ.DLL message that indicates the number of lines read during travel. See screen shot below.

Set the panoramic machine to its ready position. Make sure that the X-ray source for the panoramic machine is turned off. (Because there is no X-ray emission, the dark image can be used to subtract any effect not related to X-ray exposure.) Make sure “Calibrate Mode” is checked in the Panoramic Calibration Utility. Click “File>New Image” (or the yellow button directly below “File”) in the Panoramic Calibration Utility to take a dark image (no X-ray) exposure. Depress and hold the exposure hand switch until the imaging cycle is complete. A white image is displayed with a black horizontal line at the center. (If you don’t see the line, click on the “zoom” icon --- directly under “window” and left click on the image.) This line is a placeholder for pixels located between the two subsensors in the sensor assembly. This line will be eliminated after calibration. Leave image open.

You should see a vertical dark band in the center of the image, created by the reduction in the speed of the X-ray source as it travels behind the spine. Measure pixel info by clicking on the grey area of the image (on both sides of the black column in the middle) and reading the percentage value from the status bar at the bottom of the screen. Pixel values should fall around 45% ( + or – 5%) with the exception of pixels in the saturated band at the center of the image, which will be higher. If the values are higher or lower then this range, delete the image, adjust the panoramic machine’s technique factor (kV and mA) accordingly, and retake the Flat-Field X-ray. To increase the pixel value you need to increase the kv or ma. To lower the pixel value decrease the kv or ma.

Crop Extra Rows (Right / Bottom)Click on the bottom right side of the image where the area transitions from white to gray, and record the R and B numbers that appear in the status bar, Verify these numbers in the Crop Right and Crop Bottom boxes to the Calibration File Dialog box. You will need to subtract the number you entered for image width number from the right side to obtain the Crop Right number. To determine the Crop Bottom you need to subtract 1603 from your bottom number (The numbers you read on the status should be + or - 15 of the numbers that were entered in the boxes by the program) ( only change these numbers if the value does not fall into that range).

STEP: 7. Exclude Dark Band (Left)STEP: 7. Exclude Dark Band (Left)At the center of the image is a dark saturated section. Click on the area just to the left of that section and record the X number that appears in the status bar. Verify this number in the Exclude Dark Band box in the Calibration Dialog Box. The saturated section is called the “exclusion area” and is not included in the calculations for creating a calibration file.

Click “Calibrate, Calibrate, Create File”. Confirm that a short message appears verifying that a calibration has been successfully created. The message also includes the path to the folder where the calibration file was stored (C:\Program Files\Schick Technologies\Shared Files). Calibration files created for Schick Technologies’ hardware can be identified by the company initials “ST”, followed by the Sensor serial number, and a *.CDR extension. Panoramic calibration files also include the “PAN” designation and the scan direction. Click OK to close the message.

Close the calibration utility. The program will ask if you want to save the dark and flat-field images that were made during calibration. Answer yes and save them to the Schick Technologies directory in a new folder you will create called “calibration images”.
