The Stentor Student II Violin Outfit has won the Music IndustriesAssociation (MIA) award for the Best Bowed Instrument more than 20 times. The MIA is the UK trade association of the musical products

industry and its awards are voted for by the membership.

At Stentor we strongly believe that each child should have an opportunity to play a musical instrumentand that music should be a part of everyone'sdevelopment throughout their life. We consider that

all students should have access to musical instruments that areeasily playable and responsive in sound.

The instruments must be available at a reasonable cost so that all those who wish to learn to play are able to do so. We haveworked over many years with teachers and educationalists to

achieve these goals.

Our history

Stentor has been known to orchestral stringed instrumentplayers and teachers for more than 100 years. According to Greek mythology, Stentor was a herald with the voice and volume of "one hundred other men together".

Edward C. Doughty, a Professor of Music and teacher of the violin, registered the name ‘Stentor’ in 1895 for gut violin strings and rosin.

Since the 1960s, more than one million young musicians have beguntheir musical careers with a Stentor instrument. Many of these sameviolinists and string players are now to be found in major orchestrasand the teaching profession throughout the world. Stentor sells more orchestral stringed instruments than any other companyinternationally and offers unequalled value.

Our workshops

Stentor violins, violas, cellos and basses are made inStentor's own factory workshops in China, in much the same way that instruments were made in Europe for hundreds of years. Stentor was the first company

in the world to establish a wholly owned violin factory workshop in China. Jiangsu province has a tradition of hand skills and at the Stentor workshops we have been able to harness these skills, making instruments in a traditional manner, under our own management, in pleasantworking conditions.

Our brand

The Stentor name is known for quality, consistency andreliability. Stentor violins, violas, cellos and basses leadstudents from their very first lesson up to professionallevel. At Stentor, we recognise that the most important

instrument for any musician is the one they start on and we arecommitted to provide the quality and affordability to ensure thatplayers have the most enjoyable and rewarding experience. Teachersand music services everywhere recommend Stentor instruments asthey recognize the quality and value we offer.

Our quality

Stentor violins, violas, cellos and double basses are carvedfrom solid tonewoods, from the initial instrument shape tothe finer details. Instruments are individually thicknessedfor quality of sound. We carefully control the specification

and measurements of Stentor instruments at our own factoryworkshops to produce instruments that have the essentialcharacteristics of good tone and consistent quality control. On allStentor instruments, the bridge and soundpost are carefully fitted toensure the best playability. Many other instruments made withoutthese controls are unplayable, leading to disappointment anddiscouragement.

Violas

Violas are mostly known by their back measurement rather than byfractional sizes. Many years ago Stentor introduced small size violas, after consultation with teachers over changing teaching methods. The Stentor Student II range is available in seven sizes down to12"(305mm). These instruments have increased rib depth andcorrect dimensions of bass bar and thicknessing to produce a good'viola' sound; this cannot be achieved by using a violin simply fittedwith viola strings.
