Stena Oil – Scandinavia’s leading physical supplier of marine fuels has now established bunker operations in West Africa. For the benefit of our customers we bring all our offshore bunkering experience, skills and technological know-how into the WAF area.

We go where our customers go

We are able to supply bunkers 30–50 miles off the coast at various locations. This means that we can offer a safe, reliable and flexible bunkering service to all vessels in the region bringing with us from Scandinavia our efficient working methods and quality assured processes.

Stena Oil has the capacity to cover a huge range in the West African region and operates in all the major bunkering hubs in the area. We supply marine fuels with efficiency and the highest level of safety and performance. As always, we go where our customers go.

Customized tankers and experienced crew

In order to maintain the highest standards of safe and reliable service, same as provided to ship owners in Scandinavia, the tankers we use in West Africa are rebuilt and customized for operating in this region. Our vessels are equipped with the latest technology for efficient operations and – for example – carry flow meters to verify the volumes supplied.

The crew is all well-trained professionals with long experience from offshore bunkering. Both vessels and crew have undergone the same stringent quality assurance programme called Green Bunkering, same as used in the Scandinavian operational area.(see next page).

Focus on quality and safety management

More than a decade ago Stena Oil became involved and created a safety agreement package for the Scandinavian waters called “Green Bunkering”. A formal set of rules was adopted, encompassing the following items:

Pressure test of hoses up to 10 Bar•

All tankers must carry oil pollution prevention •equipment including 50 meters of oil booms with absorbing material functioning as “first aid” in case of an oil spill

Clear communication requirements between •tanker personnel and receiving vessel crew

Special education and training of tanker crew•

Annual vetting of bunker tankers •

Electronic overflow alarms on each bunker tanker•

Checklists and operational procedures•

Once all these requirements have been met, the bunker tanker is awarded the “Green Card”. Without this card no bunker tanker is allowed to perform bunker operations in the area which issues the Green Card.

Since these rules entered into force in 1999 – not a single drop of oil has been spilled into the water. We are immensely proud of this fact and are sure that the know-how, the experience and the working processes will benefit our customers in West Africa.
