We believe as a school the practice of being mindful very much fits with our philosophies around student wellbeing. The intent of this training is to support our staff in their own mindfulness but also enhance the mindfulness of our girls here at Stella. The workshops have focused on mindfulness practice and setting good spaces for the creation of mindfulness. In such a fast-paced and busy world, mindfulness is important for so many reasons. ‘Research suggests that practicing mindfulness strengthens brain areas related to attention. This leads to improved emotional regulation, mental health and cognition.’ (Smiling Minds – Evidence based guidelines for mindfulness in schools) If you would like to join us on this journey, keeping in mind that each PC group will practice this a little differently and at different times, please download the Smiling Minds App. Uniform The girls’ uniforms have been looking wonderful recently and we thank you for your support in this. Staff have noticed that some girls are still wearing jumpers outside of our uniform guidelines. If you are unsure about what the girls are and are not able to wear to school please don’t hesitate to ask, visit the website or download the Stella Family Handbook from the portal. A reminder that all girls in Years 7 to 10 should be in the new sports uniform in 2019. Further details about the end of this changeover period are in the Family Handbook or available from the Uniform Shop. Reports Semester 1 Reports are available on the portal this afternoon for girls in Years 7 to 10. This report is an excellent conversation starter with your daughter about how they are progressing academically, where their strengths lie and how they are going to work on the areas identified for improvement. Hopefully, your daughter has achieved to the best of her ability during the first semester and is planning to set some academic and personal goals for the rest of the year. Term 3 Term 3 begins for all year levels on Tuesday, 24 July. Staff will spend the Monday in Professional Learning, further developing their collective efficacy and use of effective questioning techniques. There are a number of important events in Term 3 but one very special night to put in the calendar is the Bodies of Work Exhibition on Wednesday, 22 August. This night showcases such amazing HSC work and is worth visiting with the whole family. All the best for a safe holiday. Sarah Carter, Deputy Principal from the Deputy Principal

Stella CommunityNorthern Beaches Council “Future YOUth Summit”On Thursday, a group of 10 girls from Year 10 attended the Northern Beaches Council’s first ‘Future YOUth Summit’ with a variety of other schools from around our area. It was a day aimed at young people to think about their future and how they can create a business on the northern beaches. We listened to guest speakers who all have made successful businesses and their ideas on important topics such as future trends, the future of tech, the importance of communication and motivation. These helped me work out what jobs will even exist in the future as Stuart White from Microsoft said, “85% of jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t been invented yet”. When we are 28 there will be so many new innovations that most of the jobs now will be irrelevant, there will be robots and other forms of artificial intelligence. I listened to a presentation from Layla Metcalfe, a local naturopath and clinical nutritionist who taught us about the health and education world and how she started her own business; she reiterated the importance of a business plan. Overall the day was interesting and inspired me for the future. Holly Horswill (Year 10)

Today's youth summit was such a ball, it was a really great reality check for my friends and I at this point in time in terms of subject selection for HSC because we were talking to extremely successful business people, some of whom didn't even finish high school. It's really taken the pressure off a bit and has just given all of us some perspective, which is really nice. I think above anything what I got out of the day would that just trusting the process, sitting in the unknown and being persistent can make all the difference. I'm definitely slightly less terrified of life after high school too! Maggie Warner (Year 10)

MORE DANCE NEWS Lily Boffa - Year 10 Lily has been one of the very few lucky students who has been selected to train and perform with the Locredo Dance Company. Locreado Dance Company and Program Company is a ground breaking dance company, enriching young dancers with more than a taste for performance. In fact this company is fuelling young dancer’s insatiable hunger to confidently perform within a dance company, and in turn experience dance in the “real world”. This season, Sydney based Locreado Program Company is giving 42 aspirational performing artists an experience which consolidates their already rigorous personal dance training schedules, and prepares them for a potential career in dance, both locally and internationally. These dancers are aged from 11 years to 17 years, and YES, they can really DANCE! Sunday for many young people is a day off. Not at the Locreado rehearsal studios, located in inner city Sydney. Sunday is a day of power, passion and performance. From before 9.00am, the quiet industrial end of Marrickville comes alive to the pounding sounds of avant-garde lyrical and contemporary music; accompanying soloists, small groups and entire company group pieces. The rehearsal schedule each week is varied, from technique classes, learning (and remembering) challenging choreography, to working with elite guest choreographers, including Renee Richie, Rebecca Mansueto and Matt Antonucci.

Lily is a member of the Stella Maris Dance Company, studies Year 10, 200hours Elective Dance and trains at Lamont Studios in Avalon. You can see Lily perform with the Locreado Dance Company on 21 July at NIDA Parade Theatre in Kensington. Tickets are available at http://ticketswa.com/event/we-are-one

Milani Kinkade – Year 8 Milani recently competed in the National Finals of Get The Beat dance competition where she came Runner Up for her age group. On Tuesday she flew to America where she will be representing Australia in the World Title. Not only did Milani qualify for the Get the Beat world finals in LA but she also came Runner Up in the Showcase National Finals for which she qualified to represent Australia for another World Title in Spain. Unfortunately both of these finals are held at the same time so Milani has chosen to compete in LA. Milani has had a very successful dance career to date with a number of national titles under her belt as well as being selected as an ambassador for a number of programs and dancewear brands such as Act Now Speak Later (A charity for cancer), Pure Dynamics photography and dancewear, Details Dancewear, Xchange Dance Tour Assistant, Lucy Ellis Tour Assistant and the Elite Extension Program Assistant (NZ) just to name a few. Milani has also been lucky enough to be selected for the Dream Dance Junior Company (which has been a dream of Milanis’) where she will get to work closely with Marko Panzic and top commercial choreographers from the Dance Industry.

Milani is a member of the Stella Maris Dance Company, a Stella Maris Performing Arts Scholarship Student, and trains at Elite Performance Studios in Brookvale. We wish Milani all the best of luck with her World Title and all the success for a career in Dance.

Rochelle Jones, Teacher of Dance
