Community Connections December 2015
Saltar’s Point Elementary School invited King
Arthur Flour Company to teach them hands-on math
and science skills used in culinary arts. This learning
opportunity expanded into an at-home baking lesson,
which resulted in several hundred loaves of bread
being donated to the Steilacoom Food Pantry.
Congressman Denny Heck visited Cherrydale Primary
School and enjoyed observing various classrooms.

Chloe Clark Elementary School 3rd grade
students presented their Sequalitchew Creek
Water Quality Project at the November 2015
School Board Meeting.
Pioneer Middle School 7th grade science students are shown developing, discussing and testing a plan and model based on scientific reasoning.
Students worked to determine the effects of the heating and cooling rate of the Earth’s surface on atmospheric conditions.

HIGHLIGHTS
The District was awarded a state grant in the amount of $20,000 to assist with teacher mentorship
activities. The Beginning Educator Support Team (BEST) will allow additional support and professional
development from initial hiring through the second year of service. Grant funds will support our 7 “new
to the profession” teachers at Cherrydale Primary, Saltar’s Point Elementary and Steilacoom High
Schools.
The Office of the Secretary of State awarded Steilacoom High School Library 50 science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) books, plus 3 professional development titles. The Washington State
Library and the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) provide funding to support these
book collections from award winning STEM booklists.
Thanks to Steilacoom Kiwanis, especially Harley Moberg and Lenore Rogers, for beautifying the
courtyard of 511 Chambers, Steilacoom. New benches, newly painted railings and exterior signage
completed the District Administration Center.
Chloe Clark 3rd grade teacher Alissa Thomas was recognized by Lakewood Rotary as Educator
of the Month. She is noted for her exceptional skill at developing strong relationships with students,
vital to a successful learning environment.
Thanks to Yoshie Wong for serving four years on our School Board and
welcome to Steve Schenk as he begins service as the newest School
Board Director.
