NINTH ANNUAL SILVER SPUR AWARDS SET FOR OCT. 20

The Ninth Annual Silver Spur Awards, produced by the non-profit organization known as Reel Cowboys, has been set for Friday, October 20, 2006 at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, according to the group’s president, Baron Lee Von Castle. The event will benefit the Tri-Valley Special Olympics.

Slated to receive the coveted awards are actors Morgan Freeman, Gerald McRaney, Don Murray, and Michael Dante; actress Barbara Eden; and stuntman Erik Cord. A special posthumous tribute to the late actor Dennis Weaver, will be presented by actress Linda Gray. Presenters include actors Larry Hagman, Morgan Woodward, Jameson Parker, Andrew Prine, stuntman – and past Award Honoree – Roydon Clark, and actress Dawn Wells. Western film star, Ben Cooper will serve as Master of Ceremonies, while Larry Dean & The Shooters will provide the music. Also scheduled to appear are the Foothill Vigilantes and gun twirler Tombstone Tony Redburn.

Also on the program will be a Silent Auction slated to include generous contributions from James and Janet Arness, Paramount Producer Mr. A.C. Lyles, noted Western Artist Rob Word, Jamie Nudie of Nudies Rodeo Tailors, and the late Dennis Weaver.

The Reel Cowboys, founded in 1997, is made up of motion picture professionals who have worked in Western films and television programs, as well as individuals whose only involvement is a shared love for the old west and the organization’s ideals of helping various Southern California charities.

The San Fernando Valley has a long and rich Western heritage.

In the 1930’s Republic Studios, where CBS Studios in Studio City now stands, cranked out many a western oater. For 25 years the studio played home to many silver screen cowboy who spent their free time in the Valley’s small towns and enclaves where western hang-outs like the Palomino Club and Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors took center stage.

Residents like horse trainer Glen Randall and prop rental merchant Fat Jones, whose business was located on the corner of Cahuenga and Oxnard Blvd., made their livelihoods supplying the studios with services and materials needed to produce their western films, serials and television programs.

During it’s heyday, silver screen cowboys like Rex Allen, Roy Rogers, Monte Montana, Gene Autry, Stuart Hamblin, Dennis Weaver and Smiley Burnette all made the Valley their homes, with beautiful sprawling ranches encompassing the wide open spaces. From Gene’s beautiful ranch nestled behind what is now the Beverly Garland Hotel to The Iverson Ranch deep in the hills of Chatsworth, the Valley was home to many a REAL cowboy.

 A change in times rode in both progress and the REEL COWBOYS.

The REEL COWBOYS is a non-profit corporation that was founded by men and women who work in Western motion pictures and TV shows in front of and behind the camera. They include actors and actresses, working cowboys and stunt people, as well as individuals whose only involvement is a shared love for the old West and the organization’s ideals of supporting several Southern California charities through presentation of its annual SILVER SPUR AWARDS and other fund-raising events.

This years SILVER SPUR AWARDS will be held on October 20th in the Empire Room of the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, and they have selected the Tri-Valley Special Olympics as their chosen charity recipient for 2006.

The Governor and First Lady have been invited for the festivities, and to deliver the Pledge of Allegiance to the crowd.

The Honorees for the SILVER SPUR AWARD have been chosen for their contribution to the Western television and film genre. Among this years recipients are Morgan Freeman, Barbara Eden, Michael Dante, Don Murray, Erik Cord and Gerald Mc Raney.

Such names as Jameson Parker, Dawn Wells, Morgan Woodward, Andrew Prine and Larry Hagman will serve as presenters and help round out this year’s program, which will also include a tribute to past honoree and Emcee, Dennis Weaver. It will be will be delivered by actress and friend, Linda Gray.

Music will be provided by Larry Dean and the Shooters, and this years Emcee will be noted Western film star, Ben Cooper.

The evening will also play host to a silent auction where generous donations have been contributed by noted Western Artist Rob Word, Paramount Producer A.C. Lyles, Al Frisch, Jamie Nudie of Nudies Rodeo Tailors, Mrs. Dennis Weaver and Marshal Matt Dillon himself, James Arness.
