News from not so far away

Parable of the Wedding Feast. For the 5th week in a row, we hear one of Jesus’ famous parables. Like several before, it’s a surprisingly harsh story. An important thing to keep in mind—context, context, context.

In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus enters Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) at the beginning of chapter 21. Last week and this week, we read from chapters 21 & 22. That means, these parables come out of encounters with the reli-gious leaders (“priests and elders of the people”) that occur during the final days of Jesus’ earthly existence, what we call Holy Week.

I’ve been trying to grapple with the strong and often violent language contained in these stories. The height-ened rhetoric is more easily understood if these are Our Lord’s last words to his very hard-hearted listeners. He is using intense language and imagery to get the attention of people who don’t seem to be getting it.

Some commentators find in the enraged king who destroys and burns the cities of those who do not accept the invitation to the wedding feast an allusion to the destruction of Je-rusalem. The Romans sieged and utterly razed the city of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. This cataclysmic event would have been very keenly in the forefront of the minds of St. Matthew’s audience.

It is important to remember that Jesus’ words are never uttered in a vacuum. There is a literary context (where they occur in the Scrip-tures) and an historical context (the actual setting of the speaker and the writer). There’s also the context of when it is proclaimed to the worshipping community: what’s going in your heart, in our town, in our country or world, as well as the immediate context of the Mass.

“Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.” These words of the priest during the Communion Rite echo Revelation 19:19, with this slight difference—the bible passage says “the wedding feast of the Lamb.”

Yes, the invitation to Sunday Eucharist is the King calling any and all to join the Union of Christ and the Church.

Our response, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof…” is a final chance to put on the wedding garment of humility.

We come to the Feast of the Son every Sunday. In our very own breasts Heaven is wedded to Earth, God’s divinity becomes one with my poor humanity through the Eucharistic Bread and Wine. The attitudes with which we approach this great Sacrament (visible sign of an invisible grace) determine whether or not we’re ‘dressed’ for the occasion.

The Bottineau Blue Line youth program—is having a Pancake breakfast today, Sunday October 15 at the Community Arena (hockey rink) from 9am—1pm to help offset the costs of hockey, and keep it affordable for all families. It is free-will offering.

Bottineau Co. Social Services is asking for donations for Bottineau County families in need. Articles mostly needed are: Soap—Laundry/Dish/Hand & Body, sham-poo and conditioner, toothpaste and toothbrushes, de-odorant– both female and male, lotion, Kleenex, paper towel, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and diapers. Do-nations can be dropped off at Bottineau Co. Social Services. If you would rather make a monetary dona-tion for supplies, please call the office 228-3613.

In both St. Mark’s and St. Andrew’s we will enter-tain nominations to Parish Council from this week-end, Oct 14-15 through Oct 28-29.

One can either nominate his/her self, or an-other. We only ask that if you nominate someone other than yourself, you clear it with that person. Everyone nominated must be willing to be placed on the ballot. We will not be contacting nominees to ask if they’re willing to be on the ballot.

At St. Mark’s, we will be accepting nomina-tions for new officers for the Altar Society at the same time.
