From The Rectory

Hello All,

This year sees the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. To mark this event we will be holding Remembrance Services in Dorrrington, Leebotwood, Longnor, Smethcote and Stapleton. These services will be held on Sunday 9th November at 10.45 am. We will also be holding remembrance services in Dorrington and Longnor on Tuesday the 11th November at 10.45 am this is so that the schools can attend as both schools have been doing a lot of work on the First World War.

Everyone is welcome to all these services. The names on both World War rolls of honour will be read out in our services. If you have someone who has died in the world wars but is not from this area, and you would like their name to be read out at one of our services, please give me, or one of the church wardens, their name. Likewise if you have any one who has died in battle in any other conflict you would like to be remembered please give their name for us to read out.

Several times this year I have been given 1 Corinthians 13 as the couples choice for a bible reading at their wedding. I have encouraged them to use this reading as a personal checklist of their spiritual growth and the growth in maturity of their marriage. This may be achieved by inserting ones own name in place of the word “love” in the passage. A similar result may be had in the case of our own, everyday, Christian lives by using the list of the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5, and inserting our name in the passage.

What we then have is Fred is increasingly Loving, always seems to be full of Joy, and brings Peace wherever he goes. Fred seems to have unlimited Pa-tience, is known for his Kindness, and demonstrates his integrity with Good deeds. His whole attitude to life stems from his Faithfulness to God. Fred is someone who is so gentle and in Control of his thoughts words and deeds, that it affects everyone around him.

This state of being is not obviously something any of us can achieve by our own efforts. Such a transformation of character, even basic nature, can only be achieved by the indwelling presence of God’s Holy Spirit. That’s why we need to be praying for him to refill us everyday.

God Bless

Elaine

Remembrance: of those who die – and those who survive

‘Madam. I regret to have to inform you that a report has been received that Sap-

per A Jenkins Royal Engineers has been admitted to 2nd General (Australian) Hos-

pital, Boulogne on the 23rd day of April, 1918. The nature of the wound is Gas

Poisoning (mild). I am to express to you the sympathy and regret of the Army

Council. Yours faithfully….’

Thanks to those Australian doctors and nurses, my grandfather made a

complete recovery. After the war, he returned to his wife Emily Rose, brought up

four girls and two boys, including my father, and died just short of his 85th birth-

day. He had served in France, Italy and Germany.

Sadly, many others, serving all over the world down the years, have not

been as fortunate.

I remember my grandfather. I know he vowed never to go abroad again.

Through research and his medals and paperwork (quoted above), I know some of

what he went through. I never heard him speak about it.

Through Remembrance, we not only remember those who die in war but also

those who return and what they live with. We remember what they gave. We

remember those who supported them. We remember those they left behind. We

remember the respect we owe so many ordinary people who gave so much and

we remember what war is truly like.

In August 1914, the war in Europe began, and went on to resonate around

the world. At 11.00am on 11th November, 1918, the Armistice was signed, giving

peace another chance.

Memories fade and peace becomes taken for granted. It was only 20 years

after my grandfather returned from the army that the world descended into the

hell of war once more. My father was young enough to ‘miss out’. His older

brother served throughout as a pilot.

Again, others were less fortunate. Again, others were left behind. Is there

any sacrifice greater than giving your life for your fellow human beings? Every

time we share in Holy Communion, we remember Jesus’ willing sacrifice for all of

us. He laid down his life so that we might live.

On Remembrance Sunday, at memorials and cenotaphs and in our

churches, we remember the sacrifice that so many have made in war. We re-

member the horror of war that so many have been through. But we also reflect

on the peace that can hopefully follow.

Remembrance teaches us that we should never take peace for granted.

Lest we forget.

We are OPEN! The Church was closed recently due to falling masonry from the tower. Steeplejacks have now looked at the tower and spire, removing loose masonry and securing the pinnacles to the spire. This has made the tower safe and we are able to open for services as usual. One feature we will miss is the clock, we have accepted a recommendation from the steeplejacks that the bells are not rung so the clock will be silent for the foreseeable future.

We continue to share our series of studies in the book of Philippians. Read each of the passages and quietly think about the thoughts each month.

Part 2: Philippians 1: 12-30 As we continue to grow as Christians we proclaim his name to others. Witness our faith by making sure the Sunday service is continued and by talking openly to others about what Jesus has done in our lives. (v 12 - 14). We are to live for Jesus (v 21), behaving in a way worthy of our calling (v 27). Read Ephesians 4: 1 - 2 We are to be fruity Christians (v 22). Read Galatians 5: 22 - 23.

House Group

We are delighted that four house groups are starting in the benefice in

October. All four are open for everyone in the benefice to chose one that is

most convenient. In Dorrington we will be starting this on Wednesday 15th

October 7.30pm at Park Terrace Dorrington. For more details contact: Chris

Breakell on 01743 718555. Details of the study material can also be found on

our new benefice website, www.steeplewood.org.uk (and page 18).

Through our worship at Dorrington we are developing themes of study which we share here for reflecting upon (see separate page for details of 40 days with Jesus):

Longnor & Dorrington School News

Since coming back to school in September, Longnor School has been as busy as ever. Class 1 have been enjoying their weekly visits to Cantlop Woods for Forest School. Class 2 are really looking forward to moving into their new classroom in the new building, which is near completion and looks fantastic! Class 3 have been on a trip to Chester where they visited the Grosvenor Museum to find out about the Romans. They had the chance to dress up as Roman soldiers, march around the town walls and visit an amphitheatre. Class 4 went on a walk around Longnor which in-spired them to write some beautiful poems. The school choir took part in a Harvest Service along with Dorrington School at St. Edward's Church in Dorrington on 7th. October. The service was broadcast on BBC Radio Shropshire. Both schools sang beautifully and what an experience to be on a radio show! The children at Longnor have voted for new School Council-lors, who will be writing the article for the Steeplewood Magazine each month and finally we would like to say a big “welcome” to Mrs. Adams as our new Acting Headteacher.

Selina Capewell-Hughes, Ethan Beaver (Class 4) and Oscar Bennion (Class 3).

Beverley sends a big thank you to all of you who attended

the Macmillan Coffee Morning. They raised approximately

£260 for the charity.

Dorrington WI

We started our meeting with a two-minute silence in remembrance of our member and dear friend Mary Breakwell, who sadly died on 30th Septem-ber. Our President Bridget then welcomed all members and two visitors, together with the Chairman of Shropshire Mind, Clive Ireland and its Treas-urer Ron Muxton. Mind has been our charity of the year, and we were very pleased to be able to present Clive and Ron with a cheque for £600. Clive expressed his sincere thanks on behalf of his organisation, both for the do-nation and for the support which Dorrington WI has given during the past year.

Unfortunately we were let down at a late date by the lady who was to have given the flower- arranging demonstration, but we were very fortunate to be able to persuade Donna Cieslik to help us out at very short notice. De-spite the last-minute rush she put on a very enjoyable and informative pres-entation, and Bridget gave a sincere vote of thanks on behalf of the mem-bers.

Barbara Perry won the competition of ‘A flower from the garden’, with Ruth Jones second. The raffle prizes were the arrangements created by Donna, and were won by Ann Hinchcliffe, Ron Muxton, Beccie Turnbull, and Chris Pennie. Carole Ray and Siobhan Peters provided refreshments.

We’re hoping to take a coach from Dorrington to the Bridgemere Garden Centre on Saturday 22nd November, to see the Christmas decorations. If you’re interested in going then please phone Carole Ray on 01743 718579.

Our Christmas Dinner will be on Wednesday 10th December at the Green-hous Stadium, where we had such a good time last year, and our next major event will be the Sixties Evening on Friday 6th February 2015. There will be 60s music, a three-course hot meal - and plenty of retro clothes, we hope. Ticket prices remain the same as last year at £15 per head and further infor-mation will be in the December issue of the Steeplewood Fold Magazine.

The next monthly meeting is on 11th November, and will be the Annual Gen-eral Meeting, held as always at Dorrington Village Hall at 7.30. If you would like to come along and learn a little about what we do or just fancy a chat and a cup of tea then all ladies would be made very welcome.

SENIORS LUNCH CLUB held at

Dorrington’s Horseshoes

The next meeting is on Thursday 13th November at 12.15 pm for 1.00 pm and is open to anyone aged 50 or above. If you would like to attend and are not already a member, please telephone Linda Hawks (718053) or Julia Bemmer (718410) as we need to

provide numbers in advance.

Smethcote WI

The October meeting was held in Leebotwood Village Hall when the business meeting was chaired by our president Marilyn Ludlow. We have sixteen members taking part in a Calligraphy day on 1st November they were given a sheet of what they need to bring with them. The open day will be held in Leebotwood Village Hall on Saturday 23rd May between 2- 4pm. We will serve tea and cakes and have displays showing all the different things that members have made and done. Christmas boxes will need to be brought to the next meeting in November and Suzanne Gill has kindly offered to make up boxes with members contributions and take all boxes into Shrewsbury. Update on the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Margaret Tremellen told members that she had received an email from Gill George from Shropshire Defend our NHS to say that from the 1st December if you attend A & E at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital you will be charged for your treatment. Audrey Barkley said that after our last meeting she spoke to Shropshire WI office about setting up a county meeting for all the WI members to meet with members of the NHS Trust and Shropshire MP’s so that we can show them that the WI can be a forceful body on this issue. Members enjoyed the talk by John Challis at the group meeting in Church Stretton and also the ramble arranged by All Stretton WI on Sunday 5th October. The meeting was followed with a wonderful cookery demonstration by Caroline Morgan. She did a three course meal with an Italian theme the starter was a baked Gorgonzola cheese cake followed by sea bass on top of gnocchi with roasted vine tomatoes and finishing with blackberry jelly and lime topped with vanilla fool. The vote of thank was given by Rosemary Oakley and Betty Dytch won the bloom from your garden. We had a lovely tea when everyone had chance to chat. The next meeting will be the A.G.M at Picklescott village hall and the speaker will be Joe Richard who will give an illustrated talk on the British Red Cross and First Aid Skills.

The Rectory

St. James the Least

My dear Nephew Darren

I suppose it had to come, but combining parishes is now firmly on the agenda for our

villages. I had always wondered what the first Earl of Stowe was trying to prove, build-

ing a church here in 1347 to accommodate 800 people when the total population has

never exceeded 250. In the short term – which in this village is measured in centuries -

it seems to have been to house the tombs of his 13 successors. I now realise it was to

make uniting with adjoining parishes in the twenty-first century more difficult. Clearly

the first Earl had formidable foresight. None of our neighbouring churches seem too

keen to share their reserves to help maintain our cathedral-sized building.

The threat of the closure of St. Herve the Bard has, inevitably, caused outrage – not so

much from its regular congregation of three, but from all those in the village who

would never think of attending. People do so like to have a church not to go to.

St. Bregowine, built by a wealthy parishioner in the 19th century because she did not

like the high church practices of the parish church of St. Iwig, is refusing to re-unite,

even though the two churches stand only 100 yards apart, in a village with a diameter

of 300 yards. If only they could get over the trauma of seeing the incumbent putting

water in the wine on Easter Day in 1894. Although it must be conceded that the Bre-

gowinians were equally affronted that when the daughter church opened in 1895, they

found that the Iwigers had provided no brass troughs at the end of the pews for um-

brellas. That they have subsequently refused to install them has only compounded the

offence.

Meanwhile St. Plegmund is in discussions with the Church of South India as a way of

avoiding uniting with anyone. Should it happen, I will be interested to see what travel-

ling expenses the new incumbent claims. It will be difficult to tell when the present

incumbent resigns, as he has not been seen at a clerical meeting for the last 30 years.

Some of my colleagues suspect he is mythical, that a bloodless coup took place in the

1980s and that the church is now entirely run by the Mother’s Union. The church of St.

Maximus of Constantinople in our nearest town has rather grandly offered to take all of

our churches under its wing, but as a parishioner has pointed out: how could we possi-

bly consider joining with a parish that fought on the other side at the Battle of Bos-

worth.

In the meantime, we will serenely carry on, as we seem to have done for the past six

centuries; parish mergers and reductions in numbers of clergy seem to be of less inter-

est than debating the suggestion that we change the brand of coffee served after Ser-

vices.

Your loving uncle,

Eustace

A Somerset parish magazine told how ministers from the Welsh valleys

were distressing the older members of the Chapel by the length of their

sermons. On one occasion an elderly man greeted the minister: “And what

is the subject of your sermon this morning?”

“The milk of human kindness,” replied the minister.

“Ah,” the old man mused a moment. “Condensed, I hope?”
