Product line of Severstal-metiz is a wide range of wire ropes, including various structures, grades,
directions and types of lay, types of lubrication. It includes wire ropes according to general
standards: GOST, EN and TU. At the present time the company offers more than 100 types of
wire ropes in various modifications.
Special attention is paid to the quality control of raw materials (i.e. wire rod), wire made from it,
and the final product. The quality management system of Severstal-metiz has obtained approval
in conformity with the international standard ISO 9001:2008. All the products correspond to
Russian and European standards having obtained all the necessary quality certificates.
The incoming control of wire rod includes inspection of microstructure, structure and surfaces
for soundness (in metallurgical laboratory), chemical composition (in chemical laboratory),
mechanical characteristics (laboratory of express analysis of wire and wire ropes). Wire rope,
both bright and galvanized, passes through the required mechanical tests in tension, torsion,
bending, winding, break with twist. As for the quality control, all the ropes are mandatory tested
for conformity with the standard in the laboratory. However, the company’s production site uses
the modern equipment for testing of wire ropes and all kinds of slings, which has no analogue at
any Russian enterprise. This is the stand for tensile and breakdown testing with load of up to 158
tones. It allows performing product testing with certificate confirming the quality.

The ropes of 1670 N/mm² grade are manufactured from bright wire of the following grades: 1570 N/mm² – outer layer of external strands; 1770 N/mm² – the rest of the wires. Due to the use of a lower grade wire in the outer layer of strands wire deformation takes place, and the contact area of wire with a block groove increases. It all results in less abrasive wear of the wires as well as the block grooves.
Type 1 - with compacted outer strands.Type 2 - with compacted outer strands and 6 organic fillers between the external and internal layers of the rope.Type 3 - with compacted outer strands and EPIWRC.

GROUND WIRE FOR OVERHEAD POWER TRANSMISSION LINES, COMPACTED STO 71915393-TU 062–2008
MOST RELIABLE AND PREFERRED FOR PROTECTION OF OVERHEAD LINES AGAINST LIGHTNING
• Absolute lightning strikes resistance. According to testing results ground wire rope is resistant to lightning strikes with electric charge more than 110 C. Testing samples have shown almost no damage even after discharge in 147 С.
• Resistance to consecutive cycle of impacts: lightning strikes & vibration load (aeolian vibration).• High mechanical strength (wear resistance) allows the use ropes of much smaller diameters and weight in equal
length spans of overhead lines.• High elongation and bending resistance due to compaction.• The maximum corrosion resistance of Zn-coating, ensuring perfect adhesion, maximum thickness and uniformity of
Zn-layer, is guaranteed on all wires of the structure.• The highest among wire ropes Elastics Modulus E allows to reduce the amount of sag when exposed by extremely low
temperatures and the ice cover of maximum thickness (by reducing the linear elongation).• Minimum tolerances of Maximum Tensile Load and weight of product (1%). According to results of all conducted tests, there was neither damage nor destruction on samples, and the MNR has not changed compared to the preset one. Actual Breaking Strength doesn’t reduce and takes the value of 103% of its predicted Breaking Strength.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT CENTREAs you know, the correct selection of rope’s type and construction, according to concrete conditions, operation rules and features of the equipment, mostly defines lifespan of the product, and also safe and effective work of hoisting mechanisms. In 2007 Severstal-metiz» has created the technical support center for clients for all-round after sales support in questions of effective using of wire ropes.
Experts of the centre provide the following services:
• Selection of rope for concrete operating conditions.• Consultations about features of application, installation and operation of ropes.• Development of special constructions of ropes (together with Technological service).• Provision of experimental batches of production.• Selection of end fittings and fastening elements.• Technical support of ropes installation.• Monitoring of an operating time of ropes and calculation of a operation warranty period. • Carrying out of training seminars.
In order to participate in ropes installation or equipment inspection, experts of technical support center can move out to any point of Russia and the CIS countries.

1. END FITTINGS Ropes are normally fitted with sockets to fix the loads to be lifted and to attach the rope to the crane, crane truck etc. These are extremely delicate points which must be manufactured with great precision and inspected regularly to ensure utmost efficiency and safety.Severstal Wire Ropes usually offers the sockets are shown below:• Clips • Cylindrical or conical aluminium ferrule• Steel ferrule• Hand splicing• Spelter socket• Asymmetrical wedge socket• Swaged fittings
CLIPSFor maximum efficiency:- Position the clips correctly. Incorrect assembly of these
clips can reduce the performance of the socket by 60% in relation to the rope’s breaking force.
- Assemble the clips so that the inner distance between the two bridges is 1.5 to 3 times (max) the width of the bridge.
- Gradually tighten the bolts to the correct torque value using a tight-end key.
CYLINDRICAL OR CONICAL ALUMINIUM FERRULEThe slot is fixed using a pressed clamp. This method is not recommended only in extremely high temperature conditions concentrated close to the clamp (max. 100 °C).
STEEL FERRULEForged steel ferrule to close the slot resulting from the intertwining of strands.
HAND SPLICINGThis is a traditional method where the rope end is fixed by splicing the strands in the rope after the slot has been formed. It does not have a clamp.
ASYMMETRICAL WEDGE SOCKETThis can be fitted and removed easily and rapidly. When fitting, attention must be paid to ensure that the loaded leg of the rope lies along the axis of the forks. The other section should be fixed using a clamp.
SPELTER SOCKETThe socket is fixed to the rope using pure zinc, low melting point metals and/or resin.
WELDED EYEWelded eye (loop) provides quick and safe reeving of the rope. Used in the oil and mining industries.

END FITTING EFFICIENCYEfficiency means the ratio between the rope’s breaking force (R) and the load under which the socket breaks. The table below shows the efficiency of the most commonly used end fittings.
The relation below has to be applied to know the actual breaking force of a socket:R eff. = R • awhere:R = rope breaking force in daNR eff. = actual breaking force of the socket in daNα = efficiency grade
2. LUBRICATIONUse of qualitative lubrication essentially improves capacity of the rope. According to the consumers’ requirements, it is allowed to produce a wire rope fully covered with lubrication, partly covered or without lubrication. Severstal Wire Ropes offers following kinds of lubrication:1. KSU is used by default. Its main purpose is protection of a wire rope against corrosion. At low temperatures (from -15°C
and more low) hardens and breaks, at high temperatures (above +25°С) leaks and sticks to rollers and blocks, that com-plicates normal operation, and sometimes leads to equipment downtimes (to clean blocks from lubricant).
2. Nyrosten T55 is operational lubrication. It has a range of temperatures from +80°С to -40°C. “Nyrosten T55” excludes disadvantages of “KSU”, provides anticorrosive protection as well as decrease of abrasive deterioration during operation.
3. Nyrosten А19/200 is also operational lubrication. Its basic advantage is a wide range of operational temperatures (+100°С to -55°C), that is the most valuable in a low temperature conditions.

3. PRE-STRETCHINGThe diagram shows the different behavior of two ropes, one (A) subject to pre-stretching treatment and the other (B) not subject to this treatment. In an initial stage of operation, the rope is exposed to elongation. After installation, elongation of rope reaches about 0,2-4% of its original length, by the end of using it reaches 6%.
Pre-stretching can be carried out in two ways:• Static pre-stretching: is carried out at approx. 50% of the breaking force with a series of load cycles, permanence of load for a certain time, and unloading until complete bedding of rope occurs.• Dynamic pre-stretching: is carried out in line during the closing process of the rope, with manufacturing of the rope on a pre-stretcher positioned before the final rope lay, with a tension that, in general, is 1/3 of the breaking force. In this case pre-stretching consists of traction forces and bending that represents an actual “break-in” of the rope. For realization of pre-stretching Severstal Wire Ropes has the special 500-tonn equipment. It is a unique kind of service which in our country can be provided only by Severstal-metiz.In comparison with the usual ropes, the pre-stretched ones have a lot of advantages:• Higher elastic modulus (about 20 %),• Higher rotational stability,• Reduced constructive elongation,• More economic: the consumer does not need to shorten or to draw a rope, that excludes equipment downtimes. On the schedule you can see the difference between constructive elongation of the usual rope and the pre-stretched one.
