MAXIMUM WEIGHT INDICATOR LOAD

The table below provides the maximum weight indicator load for a rod string in “like new” condition. The values for maximum short term load are 90 percent of the required minimum

yield strength for new sucker rods conforming to the requirements in API 11B. For conditions other than new or “like new” sucker rods conforming to the requirements in API 11B, the

values for maximum short term load should be de-rated by an appropriate factor based on the users experience.

For a single rod taper, the values listed for the size and grade are the maximum values for weight indicator load. For multiple rod tapers, calculate the total weight of all sucker rods

above the rod taper with the smallest diameter and add this calculated weight to the value listed for the size and grade with the smallest diameter. The sum of these two values is the

maximum weight indicator load that may be applied to the rod string.

The values for maximum short term load should be reached by a slow, steady, upward motion to prevent sudden load spikes capable of overloading equipment.

7 Mechanical Properties: Typical values but most manufacturer’s will only guarantee the mechanical property values required by API 11B.

7.1 The current edition of API 11B (27th Edition) does not have a requirement for elongation and reduction of area or core hardness and case hardness but is being consid-ered as a requirement in the revised edition of API 11B (28th Edition).

8 Identification of Heat Treat Methods: ICH is induction case hardened; N is normalized; N&FC is normalized and forced cooling; N&SQ is normalized and surface quenched; N&T is normalized and tempered; and Q&T is quenched and tempered.

9 Grades HA, HS and HY: The current edition of API 11B (27th Edition) does not have a requirement for high strength steel sucker rods and pony rods but is included in the revised edition of API 11B (28th Edition).

10 The current edition of API 11B (27th Edition) does not have a requirement for the “grade, chemical composition, mechanical properties and product identification markings for cou-plings and sub-couplings” but is a requirement in the revised edition of API 11B (28th Edition).

10.1 Product identification markings can be applied on the outer diameter, box counterbore or inside chamfer of the coupling and sub-coupling. Product identification mark-ings on the inner diameter will provide long term traceability prior to and after field installation and is the preferred method of marking.
