CBC Manufactures Award Winning WineryThe Law Family Winery located in Paso Robles, CA, recently received an award for its unique modern design. The facility utilizes its steep hilltop property for its gravity flow winemaking, in which no pumps or me-chanical forces are used and the wine flows from one level to another during the winemaking process.

This 23,778 sq. ft. project was constructed by Specialty Construction, Inc., of San Luis Obispo, CA, an Authorized CBC Builder. CBC supplied the steel for this clear-span/hybrid western frame that also utilizes 2½-inch insulated metal roof and wall panels from All Weather Insulat-ed Panels providing for a clean interior finish surface. The exterior was covered in rusted Corten to provide a natural finish and complement the surrounding landscape.

The Law Family Winery will provide the usable space for its wine pro-duction, barrel storage, tasting room and its administrative offices. It achieves its gravity flow wine process through the tiered design of the winery as well as energy efficiency with its unique butterfly roof de-sign. The roof provides excellent cover from the hot sun during crush season while still providing good natural daylighting. The butterfly roof is also set up for the installation of photovoltaic panels.

The CBC team worked with Specialty Construction Inc., to provide a metal building solution that provided a cost-effective product, efficient schedule and architecturally unique features that blended well with conventional concrete, glass and plaster finishes. Steve Haymaker, vice president of Specialty Construction Inc., said “The pre-engineered metal building structure allowed for this with the clear-span frames, unique frame profiles and steel mezzanine structures constructed over the fermentation tanks.” Although the project had challenging site conditions – as it was built on a hilltop with very limited access – it was delivered on time and erected efficiently.

American Buildings Company

ABC Builder Brings New Life to Howard Greenhouses & ProduceFamily owned and operated since 1970, Howard Greenhouses & Produce was in need of a larger facility to grow with their thriving busi-ness. Paulsan Construction Inc., an American Buildings Company (ABC) Authorized Builder, was hired to expand the facility.

Located in Simcoe, Ontario, Howard Greenhouses & Produce special-izes in zucchini and squash for wholesale market produce, as well as bedding plants and hanging baskets.

The VanHee Drafting & Design team worked in unison with Paulsan Construction to cost-effectively and efficiently provide a seamless blend of the existing and new building. Before the renovation could begin, Paulsan Construction relocated the 3,000-square-foot existing building. The 10,000-square-foot addition used ABC’s custom engi-neered building system, wall and roof panels.

Paulsan Construction provided and attached an ABC metal gable roof framing system to the existing building to allow for palletized storage and display racks. A 24-foot-6-inch by 30-foot closed-in mezzanine was also built for cold storage.

To aesthetically bring both buildings together, Paulsan Construction re-roofed the existing building with American Standing Seam 360 roof panels as well as the new building in a Galvalume® finish. American Architectural III wall panels in dark bronze were then used. In addition, these panels are SmartKote® cool-coated to reflect solar rays more effectively and reduce the amount of heat that is absorbed into the respective building.

Together, ABC and Paulsan Construction completed the $800,000 custom-built project in July of 2014, and the satisfied customers soon reopened their doors.

Architectural Metal Systems

AMS Supplies Roof for Central Alabama Community College’s New LibraryEastern Corporation, an Architectural Metal System (AMS) Authorized Roofer, developed a new 17,243-square-foot research and media facili-ty for Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City, Alabama. The new building is a two-story facility, which replaced the school’s library built in the late 1960s.

The project is noted for the unique contrast between the building’s brick and precast façade and Loc Seam reflective white roof panels. The white roof panels highlight the many “hips” and “cuts” on the roof which add to the building’s unique appeal. Eastern Corporation furnished and installed all sheet metal trim utilizing AMS Kynar metal, which provide greater reflectance and emissivity to meet energy com-pliance regulations.

For their work on the project, Eastern Corporation was awarded the Roof of the Year award in the 2014 American Buildings Company Excel-lence in Design Awards. The American Buildings Company Excellence in Design Awards recognizes Builders and Roofers for their innovation in design and metal systems construction.

Ecospan

University of Delaware Constructs New Residence Hall Buildings with Ecospan®First-year students have a new facility to call home at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. The 252,000-square-foot East Residence Hall Buildings A and B provide 767 additional beds. The project was constructed using Vulcraft Group products, a leading producer of steel joists, steel joist girders and steel decking in the United States.

The project used 180,000-square-feet of Vulcraft’s composite floor system, Ecospan®, which were produced out of the Vulcraft plant in Florence, South Carolina. Ecospan is constructed with 99 percent recycled steel materials for joists and more than 70 percent recycled steel decking.

The Ecospan floor system was selected for this project because of its versatility in being able to put a large amount of mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment through its open web joist. Ecospan also

has multiple fire ratings that made construction easier for the drywall contractor. The use of lightweight 14-inch shallow joist spanning 27 to 30 feet allowed for a lower building height and a decrease in footings and wall material. This led to greater overall savings for the project.

“Vulcraft was excited to work with the University of Delaware on their new residence halls,” said Erik Seiffert, Business Development Manager of Vulcraft Group. “We were able to erect the Ecospan in less than six months providing a quicker construction phase.”

The Ecospan product is beneficial to projects because it combines the quality of Vulcraft joists and decking with the innovative Shearflex® HD Screw. The marriage of these components leads to a lighter weight flooring solution that utilizes larger spans between joists, resulting in cost savings in terms of steel tonnage and space saving because a shallower joist is used.

Harris Rebar Delivers Nucor Core ValuesOn Phase One of the Brookfield Place office tower, a substantial two tower project in Calgary, Alberta, Harris Rebar fulfilled their core value of customer focus and achieved the number one priority, getting the job done safely.

When unexpected delays postponed the raft footing start date, Ellis Don Construction Services looked to Harris Rebar for a solution. With only five weeks until the annual Calgary Stampede and the Stampede parade requiring the removal of lane closures for two weeks, it was imperative that the raft slab was completed in only four weeks, two weeks ahead of its original schedule - a daunting challenge to placing manager Dave Shelefontiuk and all of his installation team.

“I could not be more proud of the way our team tackled this challenge,” said Ken Cosby, branch manager at Harris Rebar. “All our departments, detailing, fabrication and placing stepped up and surpassed any reasonable expectation.”

The raft footing was 17,765-square-feet requiring the fabrication and installation of almost 2,300 tons of rebar. The raft footing had up to 12 layers of rebar in the bottom mat and up to seven layers in the top mat. The complicated design and support system gave the team an unusual and problematic 300 ton layer at mid height. Rick Dozzi, a professional engineer at Harris Rebar developed a ladder support system to overcome the issues of supporting both the top and mid mats effectively and safely. Nucor Seattle Bar Mill was instrumental in this success, providing over 3,000 tons of special order grade 500 weldable rebar with short notice.

Harris Rebar has placed over 4,000 of the 7,700 tons of rebar without any injuries, recordable or lost time incidents.

“I was just watching your people from above and was amazed at the due diligence they have been taught about tying off with lanyards. Tie off, drop two feet. Tie off move right, left two feet,” said Scott Thompson, project director at Ellis Don Construction Services. “It was amazing and something your firm and your people should be very proud of. I remember the old days and this was a thing of beauty.”

Harris Rebar originally contracted for the 7,700 ton building substructure, but based on their superior performance they were also awarded the additional 6,300 ton superstructure above.

“I’ve never seen this quality of detailing before,” said Joe Bechberger, senior project manager at Ellis Don Construction Services.

NBS Helps Preserve History in GeorgiaSince 1974, the non-profit Thronateeska Heritage Foundation located in Albany, Georgia has been dedicated to the study and preservation of artifacts, culture, traditions, customs and way of life of the people of South Georgia. To support their efforts, the Thronateeska Heritage Center was established in the former 1913 Union Station depot, now known as Heritage Plaza. The Center consists of several national landmarks, science and history museums, a train exhibit, and a planetarium, and provides a unique and dynamic learning experience for children and adults alike.

The latest addition to the Thronateeska Heritage Center is the new South Georgia Archives Building. This building is home to the Archives Department, which is responsible for collecting and caring for the

archives and artifacts for the City of Albany and Dougherty County. Nucor Building Systems South Carolina Division provided steel for the 10,062 sq. ft. addition, which was constructed by LRA Constructors, Inc., an Authorized Nucor Builder.

The building addition features a Nucor CFR standing seam roof, and its design uses exterior finishes, including brick and natural timber, that complement existing Thronateeksa Heritage Center buildings. The addition is directly connected to the Center’s administrative offices, located within the Fry-Merritt house. The former residence was constructed in 1900, and blending the new addition with the historical building posed a special challenge to the Builder. Other construction challenges included operating and maintaining clearance

along the existing rail service that operates 25’ from the property, and maintaining safety requirements along the brick paved Roosevelt Avenue. Because the facility is used to store one-of-a-kind records and artifacts, specialized HVAC and fire protection systems were incorporated into the building design.

“Due to our ongoing relationship with Nucor Building Systems, we were comfortable with their ability to work with us to meet the budget, design objectives and constructability challenges associated with this project,” said Jake Reese, Project Manager for LRA Constructors, Inc. “The advantages of the main pre-engineered metal building structure were utilized in concert with the advantages of a small adjacent conventional structure within a very tight footprint to meet the needs

of the project. The ability of the LRA and NBS teams to work through the various details during the preconstruction phase was imperative for the success of the project.”

In addition to storage, the Archives Department at the South Georgia Archives Building is responsible for scanning permanent documents for the City of Albany and Dougherty County, including City Commission Meeting Minutes, Ordinances and Resolutions, going back to 1907, and entering them into a searchable digital database. The facility is also utilized by the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital to curate archives and artifacts collected throughout their 100-year history. The South Georgia Archives is open to the public for research purposes.

Fisher & Ludlow

Meet One of Fisher & Ludlow’s Newest Teammates – RTCSHe may not have an official employee number (yet) but, RTCS or Robot-ic Tread Cell System is looking to become an indispensable member of the Fisher Team. RTCS comes to Fisher & Ludlow as a specialist in the manufacturing of grating stair treads. Originally purchased to make a standard tread of 36" long x 12" wide across all product ranges, the welding package has quickly grown to encompass other sizes.

Through automating the stair tread process, facility ergonomic issues are reduced and at the same time resource allocation is made more effective as this frees up to four skilled fabrication teammates, who can then focus their efforts on the more complicated customer jobs. RTCS is the child of Lincoln Electric, and came to Fisher & Ludlow as a packaged weld cell unit (series 40).

From any standard size grating blank to finished tread, RTCS can create a consistent product upwards of 200 treads per shift without compro-mising the high quality that Fisher customers have come to expect. Fisher & Ludlow is pleased to have RTCS join the team.

Vulcraft

Vulcraft Manufactures Steel for Niles North Aquatics Center’s New AdditionThe Niles North Aquatics Center, home to a year-round competitive swim program hosted by the local school district, Illinois Swimming and USA Swimming, features a new two-story addition and compe-tition pool, in Skokie, Illinois. KJWW Engineering Consultants worked with Vulcraft Group, the leader in steel joists, steel joist girders and steel decking, to complete the project.

The 23,348 sq. ft. aquatic center is distinguished by its curved ceiling that creates a dramatic exterior profile. The curved roof accommodates the seating area by making one end of the building two stories high. The interior features an exposed structural ceiling, which captures natural day lighting and provides a light and airy atmosphere. Con-structed with Vulcraft arched chord joist and composite floor decking, the building is LEED® certified, designed to reduce energy use by 44 percent, resulting in annual savings of 31.5 percent.

Vulcraft’s products work in unison to provide a secure and robust facil-ity. Vulcraft’s arched chord joists were chosen because of their ability

to withstand the high humidity of an indoor pool. Due to the repetitive design of the 20 exposed ceiling joists, Vulcraft was able to manufac-ture the material easily, in a cost-effective manner, bringing together an integral component to the design. The aesthetics of the joists were also considered because of the exposed nature of the ceiling.

The pool includes a seating area and a new eight-lane stretch pool with movable bulkhead. The mezzanine provides spectator seating for 500 and the pool deck seats 180 athletes. The renovation of the existing pool includes corridors, locker rooms, new pool and deck surfaces, support space, plumbing, roof and efficient lighting and mechanical systems.

For their work on the project, KJWW Engineering Consultants was recognized as a winner of a 2014 NuHeights Design Award by Vulcraft/Verco Group. The NuHeights Design Awards recognize outstanding design, architecture and the diverse applications of building with steel.

Nucor Divisions Unite in Support of a Great CauseNucor Building Systems - Indi-ana, Nucor Fastener - Indiana, Vulcraft and Harris Rebar worked together to host the 2nd annual Fit & Fun 5K Wellness Run/Walk in St. Joe, Indiana. The race was held on Saturday, October 4, 2014. There were a total of 259 people registered, 152 finished the race, and close to $3,000 was raised for the DeKalb County Relay for Life.

To help encourage more team-mates to get involved in the event, each of the four divisions competed to win a trophy. The di-vision with the largest percentage of employee participation was the winner. Nucor Fastener came in 1st place with 9.47% participa-tion, Harris was 2nd with 6.67% participation, NBS was 3rd with 6.13% participation, and Vulcraft was 4th with 1.11% participation.

Nucor Building Systems Supports New Welding Program At Swansea High SchoolNucor Building Systems recently donated safety equipment to be used for Swansea High School’s newly established welding program. This is the first year the program is being offered as part of the school’s Career and Technology Education (CATE) Program, with 70 students already enrolled.

The donated items provided by Nucor Building Systems include hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection equipment, welding jackets and welding hoods which will provide the necessary personal protection equipment for students in the program.

“As a local employer of skilled welders and steel professionals, we are very excited to work with Swansea High School to support the learning and technical abilities of students in the new welding program,” said John Hollatz, General Manager of Nucor Building Systems. “We hope this is the start of a mutually beneficial relationship for our company and the high school, and, more importantly, that this program opens the door to a career in the welding field for these students.”

The program focuses not only on developing students’ welding skills, but also teaching them about the importance of safety performance, teamwork and developing a good work ethic. Swansea High School’s commitment to starting a comprehensive welding program that teaches

these core principles was a key reason for Nucor’s support. The company believes the emphasis on these fundamentals will set the program apart from others.

“We are grateful for Nucor’s support of our new welding program and excited to give our students another career opportunity to explore,” said Swansea High School Principal Bryan Evans. “We look forward to provid-ing local employers with graduates who are workforce ready.”

CBC Receives SHARP RecognitionIt is finally official! California OSHA has recognized CBC Steel Buildings as an approved SHARP location. This achievement is a testament to the quality and completeness of the Safety and Health Management sys-tems in place at CBC. Even though the division demonstrated that they qualified for this level of recognition, the certification was only earned

through the diligence of our Safety and Environmental Coordinator, Jason Johnston, and constant support of the entire CBC Team.

Every teammate is focused on making sure we all go home safely to our families every day and together we will achieve our next milestone: VPP!
