Dedication

First and above all, I dedicate this book to Lord God for the

strength, wisdom and power He has given me throughout this Design. I

also dedicate this to my parents who took care of me during those

sleepless nights. I dedicate this to my Professor, Engr. Godofredo

Mendoza for teaching patiently the design specifications and the things

to be remembered during the Design Process.

Acknowledgement

This book is not just the product of the sole idea and knowledge of

the author, but also the ideas shared with others. This could not be

realized without the help others. In this section of the project, the author

would like to share his sincerest thanks to all who had helped him in

accomplishing this task.

First of all, the author would like to thank his parents for the

support and care they had given to finish the project. Without them, no

one would boost the morale of the author.

He would also like to thank the other students who exerted

camaraderie and teamwork with him. Though this project is hard and

tough, he had fun doing it because of his friends’ support.

Of course, Engr. Godofredo M. Mendoza or simply Sir Godo, his

mentor could never be out of his list. He was the one who

uncomplainingly taught the principles of this subject and patiently

answered his questions if there are. The author is so thankful for all the

considerations given to him.

Lastly, the author would like to thank our Lord God Jesus Christ

above all who indulged him the knowledge, ideas, talents, skills,

perseverance and strength of body that he used in accomplishing this

project. Furthermore, he would like to thank Him for giving the

opportunities to grow as a civil engineering student and civil engineer

someday and indeed as a Christian who will shine bright like stars in the

Universe.

INTRODUCTION

Civil Engineer contributes in many fields in the society such as in

infrastructures, transportation, and even in water pipelines. Without them, the

society might still be in times of no improvement.

Different materials are being used by civil engineers in constructing

structures, such as concrete, steel, timber, or a combination of the three. There is a

need to discover the most effective and economical combination. Each material

has advantages and disadvantages over the other. Hence, there is no structure in

which all of its structural members are made of just one type of material.

This compilation entitled “Design of Four – Storey Steel Commercial

Building” is for the completion of the course CED611DA (Design of Steel

Structure). From the types of materials mentioned above, this compilation focuses

on steel. Most of the members of the structure are made up of steel since the main

purpose of this compilation is to be familiarized in the design of a structure using

steel as the main material. Though, there are still some parts that are designed

using reinforced concrete. This is due to the fact that steel is not a suitable

material for all the members such as slabs and stairs.

The design criteria are taken from the National Structural Code of the

Philippines (NSCP, 2010) and American Institute of Steel Construction Manual.

This includes the allowable stresses of steel and concrete, the parameters used in

the seismic analysis, and of course, the provisions and limitations. The built – up

steel sections used in the design are based from the Association of Structural

Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) Steel Handbook, 2004.

If made possible, this structure will be built in Makati City, along the

corner of Ilang - Ilang Street. It is designed to have a rectangular shape for

stability and accessibility of the structure.
