Staying Safe Online7-11 Navigating the online world safely and making positive choices online are key life skills that young people need to develop as they engage with technology. The films in this resource are a great way of engaging young people and discussing important issues that affect their experiences online, providing teachers with opportunities to highlight the key messages around behavior and interaction with others. Childnet is delighted to work with Into Film on promoting both Safer Internet Day and creative resources for staying safe online.

About this resource Staying Safe Online is an education resource created by Into Film in partnership with Childnet International to support
Safer Internet Day.
The resource uses film to ignite pupils’ imagination and bring important messages to life, providing them the
information they need to be safe citizens in an increasingly digital world.
In this resource, pupils will explore the key themes of:
• privacy and sharing of information
• being safe digital citizens regarding Childnet’s 3Cs of Content, Contact and Commercialisation.
SafeguardingInformation on each film’s age certification is detailed on the next page, along with a brief rationale on the reason
for the film’s selection. You should watch the films and the relevant clips prior to delivering these activities in class,
to ensure content is appropriate for your pupils. We also recommend you view content on external links in advance
of sharing these with pupils as we are unable to accept responsibility for the content which may change, move or
become unavailable without our knowledge.
Accessing filmMany of these activities require access to the film and wherever possible, activities reference DVD time codes to help
you navigate the films with pupils. You can order films for free through your Into Film club account. Not yet Into Film?

Harriet the Spy
1996 | UK | 97 mins | Cert. PG
What’s this film about?Harriet is not really a spy, as anyone who has read the book will know. Instead, she is a would-be author: a girl who
pays close attention to everything around her and what everyone else is up to, and writes it all down in her notebook.
Of course, that could mean trouble if anyone found the book, especially when Harriet’s best advisor, her nanny Ole
Golly, is not around to help.
Guidance/safeguardingThe film contains some profanity and scenes of bullying. This could lead to children wanting to talk about personal
experiences of bullying, which you may need to report to your school’s safeguarding officer.
Before the filmDiscussion question (on slide 2 of the accompanying PowerPoint presentation):
1. Consider the film’s title. What do you think the film will be about? What different events could happen in the film?

During the filmDiscussion questions (on slide 3 of the accompanying PowerPoint presentation):
1. Where might Harriet write her notes today? Would it still be in a notebook?
2. How do Harriet’s friends react when they find her notebook? How does Harriet feel?
3. Who could you turn to if you were Harriet?
4. What advice would you give someone give someone about sharing information online or protecting an account
from being hacked?
Possible answers to these questions can be found in the notes section in the PowerPoint.
ActivitiesRun to the boardEither print or write out the Harriet the Spy prompt questions on page 8 on A3 paper and stick them around the room.
Show the clip ‘Secrets revealed’ {00:50:30-00:52:49} on slide 4 of the accompanying presentation. In groups of 3-4, ask
pupils to circulate the room and spend one minute at each poster adding possible answers to each question. Afterwards,
hold a discussion as a class using the answers on the A3 sheets.
Exploring characterAsk children to complete the Harriet Role on the Wall template on page 9. There is a Word bank on page 10 to help younger
or less able pupils. More able learners could be asked to consider how the film communicates feeling through scene, lighting
and sound. As an alternative extension task you could also ask children to complete a Character profile on page 11 for one of
the other characters in the film. They could do this in pairs or small groups, or individually. Alternative characters include:
• Nanny (ole Golly)
• Parents (Ben and Mrs Welsch)
• Sport
• Janie
• Marion Hawthorne
To explore the clip further you could download the 3Cs and 3Ss literacy tool from www.intofilm.org/resources/127.
Face 2 FaceShow pupils the youth-made short Face 2 Face on slide 5. Ask them to consider what they think the message is of the
short as they watch. Afterwards ask them to share their thoughts as a class. Then ask learners to complete a simple
review of the short. They could start with:
• The message of the short
• What they liked about the short
• What they think could be improved.
Harriet’s blogRead through with the pupils the What is safe to put online? cards on page 12. In pairs, ask children to cut out the
cards and sort them into two piles: safe to share online and not safe to share online. As a class, find out if there are any
disagreements and ask pupils to share their reasons. As an extension, you could ask them to try to come up with other
examples of information that are either safe or unsafe to share online.
Filmmaking activityUsing the previous activity, brainstorm a list of top tips to stay safe online. Then film a ‘Top Tips for Online Safety’ video
with your pupils. Give each pupil a role for filming: director, camera operator, actors, props, runner etc. You could use
the Job role cards on pages 13-14. Actors could say one tip each on the video or they could create a short animation.
The video could then be shown in an assembly or parents’ evening.

The Thief Lord
2006 | UK | 98 mins | Cert. PG
What’s this film about? This charming tale – based on a popular children’s novel by Cornelia Funke – follows two orphaned brothers on the
run from evil relatives. Penniless and lost in Venice, fifteen-year-old Prosper and six-year-old Bo soon wind up as new
members of a gang of orphaned children. The gang is led by the charismatic Scipio, a masked young boy who stealthily
steals from the rich to support his friends - but is he exactly who he says he is? Borrowing from the likes of Oliver and
Peter Pan, this is a fun, fantastical adventure.
Guidance/safeguardingThis film could bring up challenging issues such as talking to strangers online. Some pupils may reveal personal experiences
of talking to others online, which you may need to report to your school’s safeguarding officer.
Before the filmDiscussion question (on slide 6 of the PowerPoint presentation):
1. Ask pupils to consider the film’s title. How could this be related to online internet safety?

During the filmDiscussion question (on slide 7 of the PowerPoint presentation):
1. How are Bo and Prosper feeling at the beginning of the film? How are they feeling at the middle and at the end?
2. How is this film related to internet safety?
3. Is the Thief Lord really who he says he is? How does he make everyone think differently?
4. Do you think it’s easy for people to lie online? Why (not)?
ActivitiesFilm explorationPut pupils into small groups of 3 or 4 and ask them to complete the Film exploration worksheet on page 15. You could
ask different groups to look at one or two questions each. Afterwards, ask each group to feedback while the rest of the
class take notes. If there is disagreement over answers, ask them to justify their responses. Then display the statement
‘It is easier to lie online’ on slide 8 of the accompanying PowerPoint. Ask children whether they agree or disagree and
write down their opinion and their reasoning. There is a My opinion worksheet on page 16 that could help them with
this task.
Exploring characterWatch the clip ‘Scipio’ {00:09:40-00:11:02} on slide 9 which shows Scipio meeting Prosper and Bo for the first time. Ask the
children to complete the Scipio Role on the Wall template on page 17. There is a Word bank on page 10 to help younger or
less able pupils. More able children could be asked to consider how the film communicates feeling through scene,
lighting and sound. As an alternative extension task you could also ask learners to complete a Character profile on page 11
for one of the other characters in the film. They could do this in pairs or small groups, or individually. Alternative characters
include:
• Prosper
• Bo
• Ricco
• Hornet
• Mosca
• Esther Hartlieb
• Max Hartlieb
• Victor
• Barbarossa
To explore the clip further you could download the 3Cs and 3Ss literacy tool from www.intofilm.org/resources/127.
Advice leafletShare with learners Childnet’s SMART rules to staying safe online. You can find them here www.childnet.com/young-
people/primary and either display them on a smartboard or print them off from the website to share with the group.
Ask pupils to use these rules as a starting point to creating a leaflet or poster with their own rules for staying safe
online. You could display these around your classroom or school.
WebWatch the youth-made short Web on slide 10. Ask pupils to consider what they think the message is of the short as they
watch. Afterwards ask them to share their thoughts as a class. Then ask them to complete a simple review of the short.
They could start with 1) the message of the short 2) what they liked about the short 3) What they think could be improved.
Filmmaking activityGo to the Childnet website and play some of the films that primary schools have made for last year’s film competition. Ask
pupils to plan and make their own short film based on this year’s theme. You could use Into Film’s Filmmaking Guides for
lots of tips on making films in your classroom. You can download them from www.intofilm.org/films/filmmaking
