Statistical Abstract iii

Foreword

The Statistical Abstract, first published in 1971, is compiled by Analytic Studies, the institutional research unit of The California State University (CSU) Office of the Chancellor. The Abstract presents statistical information on all aspects of the CSU to provide a comprehensive historical view of the system and its member campuses. The last Abstract, published in June of 2009, describes the status of the CSU to July 2008. The current version brings the Abstract coverage to July 2009.

When viewable as an electronic document, the Statistical Abstract to July 2009 will be accessed using the World Wide Web at <www.calstate.edu/AS>.

Information pertaining to enrollment, applications, educational achievements and progress, and some areas of instruction are produced by the Analytic Studies Division of Academic Research. Analytic Studies is also responsible for coordinating design and production of the Abstract. Other divisions within the Office of the Chancellor contributing to the preparation of the Abstract are: Academic Affairs; Capital Planning, Design and Construction; the CSU Budget Office; Extended and Continuing Education; Information Technology Services, International Programs, Student Financial Aid Services and Programs; and Systemwide Human Resources.

The Abstract is divided into seven major sections: Systemwide and Campus Enrollments, Student Profile, New Students, Academic and Support Programs, Education Access and Outcomes, Instruction, and Resources. Each section and/or subsection begins with introductory narratives describing the information presented on subsequent pages. These opening remarks are generally followed by one or more graphs that highlight issues or trends of particular importance to that area of university activity.

The California State University

The California State University was formed in 1961, when the 15 existing state colleges were organized as a system under the supervision of an appointed Board of Trustees and a systemwide Chancellor. The California State University and Colleges became the official name of the system in 1972. In 1982 this name was changed to The California State University.

As of college year 2008-2009, The California State University system consists of 23 campuses with a fall 2008 enrollment of 435,663 students and teaching force of 23,581 faculty. It is one

of the three publicly supported segments of higher education in the state. San José State University, originally established as a normal school devoted to the preparation of public school teachers, is the oldest campus in the system. Founded in 1857, it is the first institution of public higher education in California. The newest campus in the system—California State University, Channel Islands—began accepting students in fall 2002 and welcomed its first freshman class in fall 2003. To better reflect the San Francisco East Bay region it serves, California State University, Hayward (established in 1957) officially changed its name to California State University, East Bay in 2004-2005.

As the largest senior public system of higher education in the nation, the CSU offers more than 1,800 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in some 240 different subject areas, a variety of education credential programs, and a fully accredited statewide nursing curriculum. The CSU began offering education doctorate programs (Ed.D.) as of fall 2007—the first doctoral programs to be offered independently. The CSU continues to offer other doctoral degrees jointly with the University of California or with private institutions.

Of the current 23 campuses, all are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The newest campus, CSU Channel Islands, was granted WASC accreditation in June 2007.

Achieving academic excellence is a continuing goal of the system. Through its distinguished faculty, whose primary responsibility is teaching, the CSU sponsors and supports innovative educational programs and dedication to the highest ideals surrounding postsecondary education. While each campus has its own unique curricular and geographic character, all offer undergraduate and graduate instruction for professional and occupational goals as well as broad liberal education. All campuses require for graduation a basic program of “General Education-Breadth Requirements” regardless of the type of bachelor’s degree or major field selected by the student.

During the 2008-2009 college year, the CSU conferred over 93,654 degrees. That amount represented about 46 percent of all bachelor’s degrees and 30 percent of all master’s degrees granted by California colleges and universities. Since 1961, more than 2.7 million degrees have been conferred by the CSU system.

Acknowledgments

Preparation of the Statistical Abstract requires the efforts and cooperation of many individuals. Without the combined assistance of those mentioned below, publication of this comprehensive digest on The California State University would be impossible. Their contributions and perseverance are valued.

Organization and presentation of information, as well as development of the statistical graphs and preparation of the final draft were the responsibility of Harold Creech. Other Analytic Studies staff also made important contributions to this edition: Waddell Herron updated the continuation and persistence data; Michel Baker provided guidance in preparing the Abstract for the World Wide Web at <www.calstate.edu/AS>.

Other staff at the Office of the Chancellor who provided key information and analysis for this volume are listed below. Their assistance is gratefully acknowledged.
