stableandlessvulnerabletotheupsanddownsof

tourism. Toomanycommunitieshaveplunged

blindlyintotourismdevelopmentandhaveruined

manyaspectsoftheirlivesbecausetheydid. Be

causesomuchofStatia'seconomyisnontourism

does

not

needtobuildabigtourismindustryinordertosur

viveeconomically. Theislandwouldbewiseto

avoidbigcommittmentstowardtourismandcon

centrateinsteadonencouragingDutchtoretireon

theisland.

Wequestiontheemphasisplacedondeveloping

tourism. Weallcanseehowtourismhasdestroyed

theculturethatoncewasSt.Maarten's. Itcando

Abetterencouragementforeconomicgrowth

wouldberetirementandsecondhomesforthe

Dutch. Unliketourists,theywouldhavevestedin

terestsinbetteringthecommunity. Theywouldbe

keenlyinterestedinhealthcare. Betterhealthcare

wouldserveallresidentsofStatia. Theywouldex

pandtheeconomybythebuildingoftheir

homes. Theywouldexpandtheeconomybyin

creasingthedemandforvariousservices,from

plumbingtocleaningtopaintingtolandscaping

etc. Theywouldalsoincreasethedemandforcon

sumergoods

thereby

encouraging

stores

to

carry

morevariety,etc. ThiswouldbenefitallStatianresi

dents. Theywouldalsoincreasethedemandfor

restaurantmeals therebyencouragingthedevel

opmentofmorerestaurants. Again thisissome
