During my tenure as an undergraduate I have been drawn to the problems associated with Quantum Field Theory, and the Physics Beyond the Standard Model (particularly the issue of quantizing Gravity). It is a particularly exciting time to work in this field due the results at the Large Hadron Collider, which have not shown evidence for “new Physics” such as Supersymmetry or Extra Dimensions; consequently existing theories (such as String Theory) must be “twisted” to account for these observations. To find these theoretical underpinnings of nature is a challenging and exciting endeavour, and I hope to continue it by entering the PhD program at the NAME OF SCHOOL Department of Physics. Throughout my time university, I have gained an appreciating for the importance of both physical insight and mathematical logic in the field of Physics. To understand a theory, it is necessary to grasp its fundamental mathematical principles, and yet I find in my work that I find that my primary actions are due to my intuition about the subject at hand. To me Physics is a mysterious and fascinating realm that I love to explore. My imagination is stretched by the complexities of its ideas, from the odd “quantum” behaviour of subatomic particles to the notion that gravity is merely an apparent force due the fact that an observer on earth is not an inertial frame. To find the theoretical underpinnings of nature is a challenging and exciting endeavour, and I hope to be able to continue it by moving into a PhD program.
