ADVISOR OF THE YEAR

2017 STATE ADVISOR OF THE YEAR

BRIAN HENSONSkillsUSA Advisor Since: 2004

Mr. Brian Henson is a graphic arts instructor at Sikeston Career & Technology Center. Mr. Henson joined SCTC after working as a production supervisor at Moll Printing. Prior to entering his career, Mr. Henson was a student in the very program that he teaches today. Throughout his career with SCTC Mr. Henson’s program has earned more than 75 SkillsUSA medallions and raised more than $15,000 for their local hospital to benefit breast cancer programs. After the passing of a student three years ago, SCTC raised more than $7,000 to cover the costs of his funeral.

His nominators are quoted as saying…

“With Brian’s guidance, his students design, print and sell t-shirts that benefit our Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon. In the short time that we’ve been doing this, his program has donated over $15,000! Additionally, he takes every opportunity to uplift his students giving them 100% of the credit for the project. You can literally see his students beam with pride as he talked about them.”

“On top of organizing SCTC’s SkillsUSA students, registrations, leadership team meetings, and projects… he is responsible for and plans all district events as the district coordinator. Because of the excellence of his program, other CTC directors and advisors use his program as a model.”

Mr. Henson will now be Missouri’s candidate for the 2018 National Advisor of the Year Award.

The SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year award recognizes and honors dedicated career and technical education instructors who serve as SkillsUSA advisors. State winners are submitted to the regional competition. During the national conference, regional winners are interviewed and a national winner is selected.

2017 NATIONAL REGION IV ADVISOR OF THE YEAR

DEBBIE LATHUMSkillsUSA Advisor Since: 1997

Mrs. Debbie Lathum is a multimedia instructor at Current River Career Center. In 2000, Mrs. Lathum started a membership raffle to encourage CRCC students to join and participate in SkillsUSA activities. Since its inception, the raffle has recruited more than 100 students to participate in SkillsUSA annually. Through her leader-ship, the CRCC SkillsUSA chapter was awarded a grant in 2010 which allowed them to begin a community-wide recycling program. Mrs. Lathum is now a finalist for the national Advisor of the Year Award. She will be recognized on stage at this year’s National Leadership & Skills Conference.

The Chapter Excellence Program honors chapter achievement relative to SkillsUSA’s framework of developing personal, workplace and technical skills. The framework actualizes SkillsUSA’s mission “to empower members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens.” It also serves as the blueprint for career readiness — our ultimate goal as an organization. By centering on industry demands, the framework builds the foundation for relevant and intentional student learning and employability skill development.

Paramount to framework success is the implementation of an effective program of work — SkillsUSA’s planning tool for chapters. By participating in program of work activities, SkillsUSA chapters become conduits for meaningful student growth. Students take part in the planning, organization and implementation of activities, which develops their skills and builds character. The CEP recognizes these efforts by offering every chapter an opportunity to attain measurable competencies in pursuit of framework objectives.
