THE question of erecting our best buildings, externally, of iron or the time-hallowed mate- rials of marble, stone, brick, or granite, is stUl an open one, and will continue to be so in spite of every attempt at innovation; for while the promoters of iron have much to advance in its favor, it is lio less true that the adherents of the old-fashioned materials have quite as much with which to hold good the argument on their side— commercially as well as Eesthetically—and apart from their overwhelming advantage of universal practice throughout long ages. But, however this question may ultimately be decided, it is an undoubted fact that the use of iron iu the frontages of many of our most conspicuous buildings has lately, from some cause or other, received an immense impetus; and it is no less evident that that impetus will be largely in- creased by the erection of such a structure as forms the heading of our article, standing forth, as it .unquestionably does, the embodiment of the best thing of the kind that has ever yet been seen in this city. One principal cause for this is^ that Messrs. LORD & TAYLOR'S build- ing, unlike other iron constructions of the kind, unmistakably pronounces itself iron at the first glance. With its profuse ornamentation and minute rococo workmanship, which may please or displease, according to the taste of the be- holder, it makes no pretension whatever to be- ing stone; for stone is not to be easily car\'ed into such filagree shapes, or rather, only at such enormous cost as to be out of aU proportion to the ordinary necessities of a commercial buUd- ing. This is as it should be ; for every build- ing, whether of iron, stone, or wood, should honestly proclaim itself what it really is, and not attempt forms for which it is totally unfit. Truthfulness is one of the most subtle and im- perious elements in the effect produced by every work of art, and the artist fails or succeeds in direct proportion as he departs from or adheres to it. Nothing cftu be more unsatisfactory than to look at some of our modern buildings, with their large solid masses of mock-masonry paint- ed to represeht stone, 'and then to know that they are nothing after all but plates of iron veneering fixed over rough brickwork, and then coateii^ witH pigments to cheat us. To illus- trat6-;1^i^a(? aisurdum, imagine what would be the effect of erecting such a building as the Equitable Life Insurance Company's, -with its majestic breadths of space and large outlines, out of iron plates, and then painting them to look like granite! The pretehsion would be monstrous. Iron, being in its application en- tirely different from stone or marble, should, when used for frontages, deal only in small sur- faces ; it should be perpetually broken up by. little projections and recesses; in short, it should have every sort of treatment in orna- mentation that shall be as urilike as possible to that usually adopted in masonry, vrith which it cannot have the remotest sympathy. In this lay the whole success of Sir JOSEPH PAXTON'S grand building of iron and glass, for the first London Exposition, which has since proved the model for aU similar structures. He therein ap- plied iron and glass to their legitimate uses and adaptations, cutting himself loose from all con- ventional forms connected with the use offsolid masonry, and thus produced a novel and emi- nently truthful result that wiU stand the^^test of all time. Viewed in this light, the new building of Messrs. LORD & TAYLOR, now in course of completion, comes nearer to a success than anything we have yet seen. To say to what style it belongs is not easy to any one who has the slightest respect for architectural nomen- clature, as. the world has hitherto regarded it, and we would therefore rather ^invent for it such orders as "Independent" or "Nonde- script," than fall back upon the everlastingly abused '•'• Renaissance''''—the refuge of all non- plussed critics. But, to whatever order the building may belong, it is pleasing and effective to the sight. Standing, as it does, on] a very conspicuous angle—the southwest comer of the junction of Broadway and Twentieth street— it afforded the designer a splendid opportunity for artistic treatment, and [this he -has';]well availed himself of by cutting off the comer octagonally, managing the columns and projec- tions at the junction with the [sideTwalls very skilfully, and running this portion of the roof higher, where its increased height gives a tow- ering and prominent comer to the building, which is bold and pleasing in effect. The whole surface of the fronts is cut up with numberless little detached columns and pro- jections, elaborate balconies.of curved shapes richly ornamented, and a profusion of decora- tion generally, all of good form, but in such abundance as would be actually painful to the eye, but for the knowledge that aU that rich- ness is turned out of molds by the yard, instead of being produced, bit by bit, from the work- man's careful chiseL The size of this building, too, is an important element in its effective- ness. With its frontage on Broadway of 110 feet,- running back 128 feet on Twentieth street, and its rich slated roof rising 122 feet from the ground, it presents a most conspicuous ob-, ject to all who are descending Broadway in that neighborhood. The owners seem to have a fancy for large central windows, as the centre of the Broadway front is occupied by an im- ^ mense semi-circular glazed space, corresponding somewhat in form to that of their old store at the comer of Crand street and Broadway, and which has the advantage at least of singularity, if not of beauty or meaning. Everything about this building is designed on the grandest scale, in keeping with our present notions of a modem New York store. Under the grand circular space mentioned above—and which forms a sort of mimic archway open only to the springing line—is a fine porch 18 feet high, 25 feet long, and 12 feet wide, paved with variegated mar- bles. Through the wide doors on each side is entered the grand hall on the ground floor, which is 18 feet in height, and covers an area of over 13,000 square feet. The eight windows on Broadway are of commanding dimensions, being seven feet wide and 16 feet high, each of . one sheet of plate, glass. The interior will be fitted up on a scale of corresponding magnifi- cence, with counters of dark polished wood, richly designed offices, grand stairways, eleva- tors, and; all the usual appurtenances on the most iniproved pattern. But our remarks were more intended for the external architec- tural character of this building, and this we think worthy of study, as a model of its class— in iron. INTERESTIMG LAW DECISIONS AFFECTING EEAL ESTATE. Before Jtidge -loseph F. Daly and a Jury. A MISUNDERSTANDIXG IN RE-AL ESTATE MATTERS. Randall et al. vs. Christian Brand.—This was an action to recover over §400 as comniis-sions for the sale of some Harlem lots. Plaintiff testified that about October 1, 1867, defendant employed him as agent to sell the property, and that such authority was never cancelled before the sale. Defendant admitted that he did employ plaintiff, but testi- fied that two or three days thereafter he withdrew the property from his hands, saying that he wanted to find ouj- what other lots in the same neighborhood would sell for at a corporation sale then about to take place. Plaintiff testified, by himself and another,, that on the night after the corporation salo took place he called upon defendant at his house, in company \vith the man who sub- sequently became the purchaser, and that at that interview defendant gave no intimation that plaintiff was not still his agent to make the sale. Defendant, with a number of other witnesses, testified, on the contrary, that at the interview mentioned by plain- tiff as having taken place on the night after the corppi^^^i^j. sale, he (defendant) distinctly told plaintiff that tb^^^lf^. erty was no longer in his (plaintiff's) hands for'Jiii9,.a^ that he had therefore nothing whatever to do wit^ ;t. ^jTp further testified that the purchaser of the property yg^f brought to him by a Mr. Crasto, through whom the SRIIQ had been effected, andto_whom the customary aommiBSlo^ji had been paid. j Tho jury found a verdict in favor of the defendant.

IRON BUILDINGS. LORD & TAYLOR'S NEW STORE.

T H E question of erecting our best buildings, externally, of iron or the time-hallowed mate­rials of marble, stone, brick, or granite, is stUl an open one, and will continue to be so in spite of every attempt at innovation; for while the promoters of iron have much to advance in its favor, it is lio less true that the adherents of the old-fashioned materials have quite as much with which to hold good the argument on their side— commercially as well as Eesthetically—and apart from their overwhelming advantage of universal practice throughout long ages. But, however this question may ultimately be decided, it is an undoubted fact that the use of iron iu the frontages of many of our most conspicuous buildings has lately, from some cause or other, received an immense impetus; and it is no less evident that that impetus will be largely in­creased by the erection of such a structure as forms the heading of our article, standing forth, as it .unquestionably does, the embodiment of the best thing of the kind that has ever yet been seen in this city. Peter St^sbanet al. vs. S. J. WiUiams et (7?.—Two of the defendants, Ralph Moss and John Tobiu, entered into an agreement with the other defendant, R. J. Williams, as contractors, by which the Latter was to do cert.ain repairs and-carpenter-work on the premises No. 123S Third avenue for the sum of §-.375. PJaiiitiffs, who, as sub-contractors, were employed on the work- by Williams, on Sept. 3. filed ,a mechanic's lien on the premises for §100, tliis being tlie bal­ance due by the contractor to thorn, and brought this action to foreclose tlie lien. The defendant Moss was sole owner of the premises, and had paid to tho contractor lialf oi the amount of the contract price. The cause was tried before Judge Alker in the Marine Court, without a jury, and judgment rendered tha t the iion be discharged, but tha t the plaintiffs recover a personal judgment against the defendant Mos., for $142.69 damages and costs, oa account of his promise to pay Mr. Tobin's (Williams' partner) share of the contract.

From this judgment an appeal was taken to the General Term of the Common Pleas, when i t was claimed on behalf of the appeUant MOBS that , on t he trial below, a motion to dismiss should have been granted, because ho had paid to Williams, as contractor, all t ha t was due him, and the plaintiffs, as sub-contractors, could recover in their action upon the lien no more than was due to the contractor. I t was further clauned tha t the promise of Moss, as testified t o . on the trial, as foI!o«-s: " I f Tobin don't pay you, I will," did not entitle plaintiff to recover, because it d'id not appear tha t there was any consideration therefor; and the promise being a collateral one, was void under the statute of frauds, as not being in writing.

On behalf of plaintiff, i t was contended t h a t Judge Alker, sitting as an equity judge in this case, had the power to give a personal judgment, if a foreclosure coiUd not be decreed; and also, t ha t the testimony showing Moss's promise tha t if Tobin did not pay the plaintiff he would, constituted a dhrect contract with the plaintiff, upon which theur judgment might be legally predicated.

At the close of the argument, the Court rendered a de­cision reversing the judgment of the'M<arine Court.

MARKET REVIEW. BRICKS- —The general demand for North river hards con­

tinues very fair, and a pretty liberal aggregate of business made up from d.ay to day, by the various wholesale salesmen. The market, however, lacks the animation of the preced­ing three or four weeks, and cargoes are more frequently held over a day or two without finding an outlet, and this, with the arrivals footing up nearly or quite as large as heretofore, begins to have a weakening effect upon values, particularly for parcels not in every respect first clas.s, and prices may be written somewhat lower. Quotations aire s:,ill made as high as $9 per M, bu t this in nearly every

case when obtained in for the best selections that can be found, and even a t §8.50 buyers want stock above the ordi? nary average of quality. About §8.00(a>.8.2.? por M may be taken as fair figures for good " B a y " brick, and from this the range is down to §7.00 for ordinary Up River made. The con.sumption hi this city continues, but is ou the de­crease a t present, and jobbing dealers, in many instances, find their yards contahiing stock which they had calculated upon distributing, the consequence of which is a cautious policy and a determination to buy nothing now tha t cannot bo used a t once. There is a large supply on h.and a t the points of production and a few additions still being made, though it is currently reported tha t nearly all the manu­facturers have discharged unnecessary hands and qui t work for the season. From the New Jersey yards there is a few parcels coming forward and selling a t a shading frcm former figures, though the decline is moderate and the market as a whole is fairly steadj'. AVe quote a t $7(§>7..'>0 por M. Pale brick are doing very well, the de­mand keeiiing comparatively sharp, and the wane of buyers frequently exceeding the amount offering. StiU pr ic is do not appear quite as strong as heretofore, and though occa-sionally a sale reaches weU up to $,5-2.5(^5..'i0 per M, about $,5.()0 per M should bb considered as a fair markc-t rate on the bulk of the stock, coming to hand. For fronts there continues a spasmodic uncertain demand amounting, however, to very little movement, and dealers generaUy appear dissatisfied with t he condition of the market. Prices as before, and we quote a t $11(®.1.5 for Groton covering the extremes of quality ; and §2S@30 per M for Philadelphia on fair. The stock is ample for all calls, and easily available when wanted.

CEMENT.—The general market appears to bo strength­ening up somewhat in view of a slowly increasing demand, bu t no advance in value has taken place, nor does any seem likely a t present, the selling intere-st merely insisting upon former outside rates witli greater tenacitj '. Consumers are using a good deal of stock j'cl,, and in an irregular manner, the shipments are prettj'" fair, but dealers hero and there begin to inquire as to the deliveries for their winter supplies, and this is one of the main strengthening influences. About .§1.90 per bbl delivered here is the rate for any really good or prime brand ; and some of second quality are reaching this figure, though seUers can be found a t 5c por bbl off on veiy good stock, and occasionaUy some of the favorites sell slightly below market rates. The recent rains have re­moved all difficulties coinpl.ained of a t some of the mills, and the production is now proceeding without interruption, with most manufacturers in a position to meet aii.y reason­able call, and some holding quite an accumulation of stock. To points up the Hudson river and through the canals there is commencing to be quite a fair shipjjing move­ment, with hopes on tho par t of sellers of an increase in this outlet, as the time for tlie close of navigation ap­proaches.

FOREIGN WOODS.—The demand for stock in a whole­sale way, though not urged with much per.sistcncy, is evi­dently pret t j ' good, and there is rea.son to believe that a more liberal offerin.g of desirable styles would dovelope a very fair volume of business. A great many jobbing deal­ers have been purchasing from hand to mouth throughout tlie season, partly because forced to by the meagre imports, and partly from a spirit of caution consequent uptm the slow distributive trade. But tliey have a t all times stood read J ' to take parcels of first-class quality suitable for lay­ing aw.ay in yard, and still have room to spare for anything adapted to tlieir wants, though in some cases a modifica­tion from tho figures now asked would be expected. There are a few very fine parcels here, but thej ' are held a t high figures under easy control, and owners seem quite indiffer­ent about operating. Now and then there is a uniall lot in­quired after on European account, and, in fact, a few pur­chases have been made and are held awaiting an opportu­nity for shipment ; but this trade is very small, and does not ajipear to bo sought after. The local consumption is fair, and some country orders are being filled by dealers. At the close the general tondenc/ of values is in seller's fa­vor on u small offering. AA''e note exports of 2!)6 logs of ce­dar, valued a t §350, to Antwerp. The mo.st recent arrivals embrace the following; From Liverpool, 525 pea. boxwood ; from London, 35 pes. rosewood; from Zanibar, 5,081 pes. tbony ; from Frontera, 5 J5 logs mahogany; from St Do­mingo, 112 crotches mahogany. There is also reported from New Orleans, 195 logs mahogany ; froir. San Fran­cisco, 5 logs rosewood, and 155 logs cedar.

LATH.—^Buj'ers and sellers remain somewhat apart in their views, and both appear pretty firm in their determi­nation not to admit of anj ' great change for the present. On the par t of dealers, we find tha t though not abundantly stocked up, they have in mo.st cases enough on hand to meet the comparatively light call from the different dis­tributive outlets, and until forced to do so, will not enter the market for cargoes. This has been iiarticiilarly the feeling since reports were circulated in regard to the re­sumption of work a t the miUs and the consequent proba­bilities of increased shipments. Receivers, however, claim t h a t the arrivals are more likely to fall off t han to increase, owing to low prices prevailing ; t ha t dealers will all have to buy freely within a few week.s, and tha t prices are sure to advance. At from §2..50 per ]it ujjw.ard qnite a number of parcels piled out wUl become available, and to avoid competition from this accumulation when the market was ra ther dull has induced seUers to keep rates where they did during the past two or three weeks. As we close there ia only a small supply here, bu t the demand extremely mod­erate and the market generally dull. Sales of 800,000 lath a t §2.40 perM.

LIME.—^The demand from the trade has been fair, and with only moderate arrivals the market has again been kept free of any unsold cargoe-s. StUl dealers do not show the avidity to secure .supplies tha t receivers have anticipat­ed, and though comnion lime a t least may be expected to advance a t anj ' moment, the position does not as yet seem favorable to make the .alteration, AVe find that" quite a number of yards have some little accumulation on hand, notwithstanding the reports to the contrary, and jobbers want to get a t some idea how much is likely to be consumed before they commence to lay in winter supplies. State lime is in fair supply, and as usual selling in an irregular

manner, though nominally the ra te is the same as Eastern. At the close there is nn outlet for a very fair amount of stock as arrivals have recently been quite moderate; but t he general demand is not bj ' anj ' means sharp, and value.i remain as before. AVe quote a t §1.15 per bbl for common, and §1.75 do for lump.

LUMBER.—^In a retail way the market shows no very decided change, though if anything, there has been just a trifle more activity in some quarter th.at have heretofore remained very dull, and dealers feel a proportional encour­agement. I n all movements, however, Imyers continue to show the old slow and cautious policy, and actual wants are calculated out foot bj' foot, and nothing taken tha t is likely to exceed early and positive consumption. All kinds of goods feel the call to a greater or less extent, but pretty good quality is insisted upon as a rule, even a t a higher cost. In fact, it is evident t ha t the cost does not deter buyers from operating to any extent, but simply the want of use for stock should they purchase it. Not much has gone out on citj ' account for a few days, but in odd irregu. lar p.arcols the domestic shipments .would show a very re­spectable aggregate. The arrivals have been compara­tively moderate and somewhat 'irregular, but enough to cause further additions to the supplj', and we learn of deal­ers looking around for storage room in whi(!h to place their surplus accumulation. Values are in just the same inogu-lar condition as thej ' have been all the season, and we make no pretensions to giving correct figures as yet, though out­side quotation are most decidedly extreme.

In a wholesale way the market is fairly active, but the movement is not general or uniform, and still regulated largely by the quantity and quality olfuring. From local dealers the demand is not only light but very uncertain, as the majority of the yards are now so nearly fuU, as to re-qnu-e merely -small parcels to complete assortments, but when a really desirable lot is oft"ered it in most cases com­mands extreme figures, as choice stock among the present offerings is a raritj ' . The export demand continues fair, and the sales pretty general, indu ing ono good sized in­voice for tho west coast of South America, but shippers are still indisposed to operate on speculation, all the pur­chases being based upon postive order=. The recent rains have afforded some relief a t the mills, and the pro­duction will in a few cases be resumed, though too late for any real benefit to account a t this jioint.

Eastern spruce for a day or two following our last report \Tos rather more plenty, but soon disappeared, and the range of values was not effected. In fact the market is generally firm, and this position seems to be assured for the balance of the season if all the accounts from the points of production are correct. The late rains were of some benefit a t the mills, and there is more stock being turned out than a few weeks ago, but i t is asserted t h a t many manufacturers will have all they can do to fill back orders before the expiration of the season, and tha t the additions now likely to be made to the stocks will be so small as to have no effect whatever. Still in the face of all th is it is noticeable t h a t though the current offerings are about ex­hausted as tbey come in, there .still appears nearly or quite enough stock to meet the demand, and only in exceptionable cases can buyers be found willing to increase their bids, or display any unusual anxietj- in order to secure cargoes be­fore arrival. The demand for stock just now, is mainly from local and ne.ar-by out-of-town dealers. As we close the market is ra ther more freelj' suppled, but t he demand good and prices generally firm at §16.50(^19.50 per M for ordinary to p r i m e : and §20@,20.38 for choice Eastern hemlock ia in moderate demand, most of the pres­sing orders having been met, bu t full jirices are insisted upon, and for good desirable specifications we continue to quote a t §15.50(^16 per M. White piiio is iu very moder­ate general demand, bu t here and there a dealer can be found who is a little anxious to secure a moderate amount of stock, .and for quality, etc. jus t suited wUl' pay compara­tively full figures. This, nnd the gradual drawing to the close of the season induces sellers to display a litlile more firmness, and though no a t tempt to advance the cost is

made, extreme rates are, as a rule, insisted upon. On common and inferior grades, however, buyers have all the advantage, and some lots have been sold a t merely enough to cover expenses. Exporters begin to look around with ra ther greater freedom, but are cautious in their move­ments, and not likely to make up any invoices that cannot boused to immediate advantage. We quote at §][email protected] per M for inferior (shipping culls, etc.) §21(g),23 for good ; §24(^20 for p r ime ; and §39(^31 for very fine selections. Yellow pine has continued in small supply and dull, but there appears to be a little moro inquiry, and the market just a trifle firmer. The call is mainly local and for specified lengths, though random cargoes are stiffened in sympathj ' . Advices from the South represent the production as still fair, but shipments slow. AVe quote at §29 per M for fair ; §o0(gj,31 for good, and §32 for choice, with some figures re­ported as higher, but as they represent merely an asking rate, and above anything tha t can really be obtained on the regular market they are not quotable. A recent Chicago report says : Few lumber laden vessels artived to-day or last evening,

and the offerings neceasarUy were light, hardly exceeding a dozen cargoes a t the utmost. There was a fair attendance of buyers, v/ho showed a dispo.sition to take hold freely, and had the supply been equal to the demand, a large busi­ness must have been done. Though holders were a little firmer^in their viev/s, there was no material appreciation in values, and we quote prices steadj' and strong a t previous figures.

The \ month of September, particularly the last two weeks of the month, was quite fa.vorable for the trade, fol­lowing, as it did, a 4ull season. Quite a number of buyers have been in the market feeling around, and a large num­ber of sales have taken place, a t prices generally satisfac-torj ' . The market at th is time is strong, and seUers are firm. During October a number of mills wUl close, on ac­count of logs. Cass and Bad River logs have all been run out, delivered, and about all sawed. On the Tittabaw.assee the j ' are rafting out as fast as their facilities wUl admit, but there will doubtless bp a large number of logs left over in this stream uutil next year. The shore i-treams are mostly cleared up . The indications are tha t the manu­facturing season will close in a very short time.

There is now a very fair stock on the river. Several parties are alreadj' contracting for next year, which leads to the belief t ha t lumber will be no lower, but, if anything, much better.

During the early part of September, there was but little lumljer shipped. During the last fifteen or tweiitj' days, the shipments were heavj' , although falling slightly below tho.se of September last year. The foUowing is a statement of the shipments from the port of East Saginaw during September, 1870, and a comparative statemeiit with the same month during the two years previous:

in 1870, u p to the present time, except in t he case of shin­gles. We suppose tha t a discropancy might be accounted for in the fact that a proportion of the lumber taken in by vessels clearing from Lake Erie to Lake Michigan ports, and vice verxa, do not report a t either of the ports on t he river, and, in consequence, no record could be kept.

From St, Louis (Griffin & O'Connor's Market Report) we have tho following:—

The latter par t of last week there was a brisk movement in r<aft lumber, and about 7,000,000 feet white pine in t he water and on tho bank changed hands a t §16.50(§J17 to §1S®19—mainly at §16.50(o),17 for Minneapolis; and §[email protected] §22@,24—mainly a t §12.50@22 for AViscon-sin. The arrivals have been small since our last, aud the stock now offering Is less than 2.000,000 feet. Prices have mled very stiff, a t §16(?^25 for white inne ; §2-40((S.2-50for lath—§2.75 a t mi l l ; aixrl §2.50(^3.50 to.$3.7o(g^3.90 for shingle.s—latter strictly choice.

The Fair has interfered somewhat with business a t t he depots and on the Icvce, and transactions have been light. Prices are essentially unchanged, and the demand has been mainly for the better qual i t ies ; inferior grades of all kinds hard to place even a t low figures. NAILS—The supply in the hands of dealers continues moderate, though slowly increasing, and aa a pretty fair business is doing sellers remain firm at full former figures. The outlet is mainly local, and on interior order.s, though R few CAIIS afe'inade on export account. California buyers are operating- slowly. We quote cut a t 4;s(g).4j^c, and clinch .5J (g!.(5o- p e r lb. Other stj'les are nominal, a t 35(^ 30c for copper: 22c for yellow metal, and 13c for zinc. PAINTS AND OIL-—There has heen'tscarcely any new developments iu this market since our last report, business generally niliug dull, and confined to such small parcels as are wanted for immediate use. In a wholesale way, impor­ters find so small an outlet tha t tlie great bulk of the cur­rant arrivals havo to be stored, and there is a slow but sure accumulation of stock. The assortment ia also very good, even the stylos t h a t were supposed Ukely to prove very scarce so long as the European war continued, now show­ing a large enough aggregate to meet any ordinary caU. From jobbers hands there, is naturaUy a little going out, but the amount is so smaU as to at t ract scarcelyj any at­tention, and shows a continued determination on the par t of buyers to do nothing except in the way of meeting po.si-tive wants. Prices have, no t varied greatly, but the tone is irregular, and quotations on, most styles of goods nomi­na l for the presen t . . Linseed oU continues to meet with a very Ught call, and merely to the extent of the pressing wants of the jobbing trade, and with a plentiful supply offering, prices have again fallen off somewhat, clo.sing weak and nominal. Very few interior orders come to hand, and Canadiim buyers are not represented. We quote a t S6@83c in casks, and 87@89c in bbls. Exports for the

PITCH.—There was only a l ight buaincss transacted since our last, but prices remain very firm at full former quotations. The market closes quiet, but firm. We quote : §2.23 @. §2.35 for ci ty; § 2 . 2 5 ® §2.40 for Southern, and small lota, very choice, in a jobbing way from store, a t §2-50 (gk §2.62;^. Receipts for the"week, no th ing: since .lanuary 1st, 2.192 bbls ; same time last year, 5,.S6() bbls. Exports for week, 65 bbls : aince January l.st, 3,080 bbls; same time last year, 4,002 bbls.

PL-A STBR PARIS.—Lump continues in very fair demand mainlj ' from regular manufacturers, and the amount of business on the whole is if anything slightly in excess of the anticipations of dealers. Still buj'ers are not purchas­ing with the freedom of last season, and there is a pretty evident intention to calculafe as near as may be to actual wants before laying in supplies. On the general range prices do not greatly v.ary, and an advance is resisted with much tenacity, though sellers .are unwilling to contract verj' liberally .at current rate in view of anticip.ated in­creased charges for freight-room, etc. AVe quoto a t §[email protected] per ton. Receipts since our last, 5970 tons, a portion going up tho river. Calcined has met with a pretty steadj' outlet of late, and the market is very well sustained on all the first class brands; indeed, to secure tlieir favorite stylo, buyers have in several instances paid a slight advance. Wo find, however, some complaints still extant in regard to inferior qualities, many of which failing to sell quickly are forced oO: a t almost any figure they will command, and se­riously interfere with the general course of trade- AVe quote at $1.75(gJ.2.00 per bbl. for ordinary and common, and $2.25 for the best grades.

SPIRITS TURPENTINE-—There has been considerable excitement in this market sinco our last. Prices have ad­vanced fully three cents ; owing to the very light snpply and some speoiilative enquirj', quite a good business having been done for both December and January delivery. The market is still tending upward, thero behig but very little stock unsold. Business has been good, but cannot be call­ed act ive; the trade for immediate delivery during the most par t of the week being in small lots. There has been little or no export demand, the high rate asked for freight-room discouraging anj ' .attempt at shipment. The market closed quiet a t a further advance of ihf c. AVe quote a t 44 (ill 44>^c for merchantable and shipping order, and 44>^ @ 45c for New York bbl, small lots .at 45 @. 45>^c, and retail lots from store 45!^ (gt 46c. Receipts for the week. 25 bbls; since January 1st, 52.693 bbls; and for the. same period last year, 51,181 bbls. Exports for the week, 77 bbls ; since January Ist , 14,451 bbls ; and for the same period last year, 16,793 bbls.

T.^R.—Business .since our last in this product has been almoat a t a comiilete stand, tho onlj' buj'ers being the tr.ade who take a small amount to supply their immediate wants. Prices have been weak, and both North County and AVU­mington can be bought for much lower prices. At the close the market showed no improvement, and prices are about nominal. We quoto a t §2.35 @ §2.50 per bb for North County, as it r u n s ; §2.25 to §2.75 per bbl for WUming-ton, and §3.25 for rope, and occasionally §3.50 for something very choice in a small way. Receipts for the week, noth ing; since January lat , 4-1,777 bbls; for cor­responding period last year, 62,604 bbls. Exports for week, 30 bbls ; since January lat, 13,911 bbls, and for corre-spoudhig period last year, 30,174 bbls.

ALBANY LUMBEE MARKET. The Argus' report for the week ending Oct. 11,1870,

ia as follows:—

There has been a good trade throughout the dlati-ict since our last report, compsising some very largo sales, embrac­ing a general assortment. Receipts are fair for the season. The low rate of Lake freights is bringing forward large lots; .at Oswego, for instance, 7,100,000 feet were reported yester­day ; a quantity we are told without precedent aa one day's report. Coarse lumber is coming in more free, but the de­mand is equal to the supply, and there is not any accumu-l.anon of stock. The .shipments from the district during the week have been large. Stocks are plenty and weU as­sorted. Prices are without change.

The receipts of lumber a t Chicago for tho wee's endin" October 1st were 38,500,000 feet against 29,000,000 feet for the corresponding week in 1869. The shipments for the week were 16,100,000 feet against 14,600.000 for the corre­sponding week in 1869. The aggregate receipts since Jan­uary 1st are 786,238,000 feet against 782,875,000 feot in 1S69. The aggregate shipments since Janu.ary 1st are 448,352,000 feet agamst 459,110,100 faet in 1869.
