DID YOU KNOW THAT THE ELKS HELPED IMPLEMENT AFFORDABLE AND SUBSIDIZED VOCATIONAL TRAINING TO RE-ASSIMILATE

DISABLED WORLD WAR II VETERANS?! After the soldiers returned home from the battlefronts, those who were injured were left without benefits for vocational training to re-assimilate back into American society. In response to this, the War Relief Commission undertook this cause and made it one of their utmost priorities. They helped with public campaigns to encourage such training. They also created a revolving fund from which loans could be made, and repayments becoming available for other similar loans, since many veterans were in “dire need of assistance” while involved in the vocational training program. 40,000 loans were made that were astonishingly all paid back except for in cases of death. As the vocational programs and campaigns grew exponen-tially successful, the United States government followed the Order’s example and created a very similar revolving fund for disabled veterans and vocational training. In the U.S. Congress speech by John F. Miller regarding vocational training, the Washington representative recognized the Order’s dedication to such an important cause: “The Elks Fund thus provided us the first instance of the kind in the history of the country where a great, patriotic, fraternal organization has come to the aid of the Government in so timely, helpful and substantial manner.” Dr. C. E. Prosser, the Director of the Federal Board for Vocational Education also expressed his gratitude for the BPOE’s efforts, stating: “No one action taken by any public or private agency will do so much to bring about prompt and effective care of disa-bled soldiers, sailors, and marines resulting from the war, as the action taken by the Elks War Relief Commission.”

ELKS NATIONAL VETERANS SERVICE COMMISSION “NOVEMBER IS ELKS VETERANS

REMEMBRANCE MONTH” Some twenty-two million veterans live in our communities. The

Elks National President, Malcolm J. McPher-son Jr. , has proclaimed November is Veterans Remembrance Month as a way to encourage us to find local veterans and help them with their needs. Elks volunteers provide direct service to Veterans in more than 330 VA Medical Cen-ters, State Veterans Homes, Vets Centers and

other Veterans facilities each month. Through our grants to Elks Lodges, we connect directly with Veterans and military members in their communities, providing them with services where they live. We help Veterans rehabilitate and thrive by sponsoring and volunteering at 5 adaptive sports programs each year, and provide recovering veterans with therapy kits and wheelchair gloves. Our Welcome Home initiative, a partnership with the VA at the national level, is reaching out to some of our most vulnerable veterans: those who are experiencing homelessness. To this end, the Elks have pledged $4 million dollars to help end Veteran Homelessness. Last year alone, the value of Elks’ contributions to the nation’s heroes provided more than $40 million to more than 323,573 Veterans served. Let us remember to thank our Veterans and to show our appreci-ation in some special way every day, not just in November. And, should you see a member of our Armed Services in uniform, please march right up to him or her and say: “Thank you for your service. Have a great day!” It is the least we can do. Want to join us in our service to Veterans? There are more than 1,900 Elks Lodges across the country with a total membership near-ing 800,000. Elks’ members must be American citizens who are at least 21 years of age and must believe in God. To learn more visit www.elks.org
