The National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) defines 3D-MBD in two ways:

(1) The Model Based Enterprise (MBE) is made up of many related processes.

At its core is the product definition which we refer to as the Model Based

Definition (3D-MBD).

(2) An annotated CAD model that contains all of the information needed to define

a product. This annotated model replaces the traditional drawing.

Thus, a drawing is created by exception not as a standard process.

Aug 2003 ASME Y14.41 Defines how to organize and present product definition data (ex: geometric tolerances, datums, notes, etc) in 3D model

Dec 2006 ISO 16792 Similar to ASME Y14.41, defines method to show product definition in 3D model

June 2008 SASIG D-27 Defines method to document information in 3D model required by all areas involved in product creation (ex: manufacturing, etc)
