A Sense of Gratitude and Accomplishment

Dear PBS Hawaii ‘Ohana,

On June 30, I was among several long-serving individuals who retired from the board in compliance with term limit provisions of our by-laws. Mahalo to Bob Ozaki, David Leonard, Tom Wellman, Cheryl Hetherington, Rick Tsujimura and Susan Eichor for joining this or-ganization during its infancy and guiding our transition from State agency to private foundation.

I wish to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the privi-lege of serving as board chairman since the founding of the Hawaii Public Television Foundation (HPTF) in 1997.

Neil HannahsFormer Chair, PBS Hawaii Board of Directors

Longtime PBS Hawaii Board Chairman Neil Hannahs recently passed the baton to a new Chair, Robbie Alm. In the following essay, Neil shares recollections and reflections about leading Hawaii’s only public television station into new territory, from State agency to proud private nonprofit organization. The vital change took place just nine years ago….

My association with this organization began in 1986 upon my appointment to the Hawaii Public Broad-casting Authority (HPBA). My children, who are now 31, 27 and 26, were 8, 4 and 3 at the time. My wife, Mariane, was young then…as she is today. I am indebted to them for their support of my service.

In the late 1980s, the “Japanese bubble” fueled a booming economy and rapid growth of our budget, staff and local productions. But it was like a booster rocket on a space craft. It gave us the power to launch, then fizzled fast and left us to cope with shrinking our commitments to sustainable scale.

During the ensuing economic trough, we reduced staff, cut services and worried that a failure to gain State support to fulfill mandated digital conversion might jeopardize our FCC license and very existence. We concluded that the best strategy for survival was to form a private foundation and engineer passage of legislation to transfer our FCC license from the State to a community licensee.

In 1997, we filed articles of incorporation to form HPTF and recruited many of the charter board members who are now, or have recently, retired from office. HPBA staff competed for roles within the new organization or sought transfer to other State posi-tions – the process left some casualties and emo-tional scarring.

Retiring PBS Hawaii Board Chairman Neil Hannahs welcomes new PBS Hawaii Board Chair, Robbie Alm (top) and Lisa Levine, Vice President of Development, presents a gift from PBS Hawaii to Neil Hannahs, who has served on the PBS Hawaii Board since 1986.

But operations were uninterrupted by the changeover thanks to the leadership of CEO Don Robbs and experienced staff who sacrificed the security of government employment to join the team of this fledgling start-up. To heal the wounds of transition, we sought the high touch leadership of Mike McCartney upon Don’s retirement. Mike’s encouraging style and team-building initiatives succeeded in unifying staff and board as an ‘ohana with a shared agenda.

When Mike left to pursue other career goals, the board was thrilled that an individual of Leslie Wilcox’s caliber would leave a high profile position in commercial media to assume the helm of

our public television station. We hired Leslie confident that she possessed extraordinary qualifications and her performance has exceeded our lofty expectations.

The years have brought many changes, but also some notewor-thy constants for which we should all be grateful. Namely,

• the faithful and generous support of our PBS membership;• loyal and competent staff; and • Karen Yamamoto’s unwavering management of our financial resources.

PBS Hawaii Board of Directors

It has been an honor to serve the worthy mission of PBS Hawaii with capable, dedicated, and self-less individuals who have per-formed with distinction. I admire their professionalism and will long be comforted by the warmth of their friendship.

PBS Hawaii has accomplished much over the last decade, but a review of past achievements is an imperfect gage of contribu-tion and progress. A more meaningful measure can be found in the capacity of an organization to manage leadership transitions without disruption to mission and on-going improvement.

As I survey the talent we have recruited to the board and staff to serve under Robbie Alm’s and Leslie’s inspired leadership, I am convinced that retiring board members can hand over the reigns of responsibility with a sense of gratitude, accomplish-ment and confidence.

Anne Misawa is the Producer/Director of the statehood documentary scheduled to premiere Thursday, August 27 at 7:30PM – part of a 2-hour special, Insights on PBS Hawaii Presents State of Aloha.

The documentary was made by students at the University of Hawaii’s Academy of Creative Media (ACM). Ms. Misawa grew up in Hawaii and came back for a teaching position which she says, “came hand in hand with directing this research project.” The students were also assisted by other professional mentors throughout production.

Ms. Misawa told PBS Hawaii the documentary’s title comes from a March 13, 1959 sermon given by Reverend Abraham Akaka:

“The fears Hawaii may have are to be met by men and women who are living witnesses of what we really are in Hawaii, of the spirit of Aloha, men and women who can help unlock the doors to the future by the guidance and grace of God. This kind of self-affirmation is the need of the hour. And we can affirm our being, as the Aloha State, by full participation in our nation and in our world. For any collective anxiety, the answer is collective courage.”

PBSH: How did ACM students become involved in “State of Aloha”? How many students worked on this project over what period of time?

MISAWA: The research project, then titled simply, “The Hawaii Statehood Project,” started in 2004 and actually includes quite a bit of research and documentation that goes beyond this State of Aloha one-hour piece. Our first batch of interviews involved about 30 key interviewees in the 2004 summer, ranging from Senator Daniel Inouye to Don Ho to Bumpy Kanahele, etc. We had students

work alongside professional mentors on all aspects of production ever since.

There has been a tremendous amount of students involved since 2004. There are students who were involved in research and production of their documentary shorts on the statehood topic within the classroom setting, as well as students involved in the documentary on a volunteer basis.

PBSH: Was it really intended to be strictly a research project? Why?

MISAWA: Yes, the funding is from a General Services Administration grant, (a federal grant) intended for research. ACM pitched a research topic on Hawaii statehood culminat-ing in documentation that would result in a documentary format video project that could be used for educational distribution.

PBSH: What were the biggest challenges in telling the story behind Hawaii’s statehood?

MISAWA: There was no focus or approach mandated by the source of the grant. We were free to explore the topic as we saw fit.

It’s such a huge endeavor that it was quite in-timidating trying to figure out what aspect of Hawaii statehood we should focus on, what to research and explore and document, and what would be included and what would have to be shifted out of this final State of Aloha video documentary project.

The topic in itself could easily be a miniseries. Trying to edit a cohesive hour-long story, while trying to be respectful and comprehen-sive of all the various viewpoints, was one of the hardest challenges.

Filmmaking, I find, is always a compromise weighed by practicalities and involves a rec-ognition that we can’t often include every-thing that we want to or should.

As we worked and researched, it became clear that it would be important to show in State of Aloha the historical steps towards statehood for Hawaii, the motivating forces that wanted or did not want statehood, as well as address some of the legacy of state-hood and allow expression for some of the current dialogue. What interested me as a filmmaker especially was this opportunity to be able to put to film and archive personal narratives of many of our kupuna. Since our interviews, some have passed away. Having the issues resonate out of personal narra-tives impacted the students, and theywere able to recognize what a wealth of experience and perspectives their immedi-ate surroundings hold for them. Many of the students worked on their own personal

documentary shorts and segments and interviewed a lot of their own family and community members.

PBSH: Now that the program is completed, what do the students think about the finished product? What do you think they learned from becoming so involved in the history behind Hawaii’s statehood?

MISAWA: What I have heard from students over and over is that they were surprised by this or that element of history, that they were not aware of earlier, especially those who were illuminated to the various civil rights struggles in Hawaii that led to some of the motivations for statehood.

Students have often come to the topic with very strong opinions on Hawaii’s statehood (and issues of sovereignty), sometimes plac-ing the blame of the current problems in Hawaii on statehood itself, while not often

having a lot of informed historical context to their opinions. This process of examining the history from personal narratives of wit-nesses and academics allowed them a more well-rounded insight into what the motiva-tions were for people in Hawaii towards statehood, and also against it, as well as being able to recognize the complexity of its legacy and the issues surrounding the cur-rent dialogue of statehood and sovereignty. Hawaii has such a vivid history. Today part of what it means to live together in these islands is to experience our diversity – even the current discourse over Hawaii’s state-hood. We wanted to illustrate that richness of history and perspective in this film. It is important to be respectful of the people who met and continue to meet the “great hopes” and “silent fears” that are the chal-lenges of statehood. Challenges so many met with courage and a “state of aloha.”

The PBS Hawaii Aloha Diners Club Card

A Valuable Resource with Life-Enriching BenefitsAs a School Renewal Specialist for the DOE, PBS Hawaii supporter, Allan Takeshita knows the value of education. “PBS Hawaii is a valu-able resource for parents and teachers, espe-cially with their online sites – PBS Kids, PBS Teachers and PBS Kids Go!” said Allan. “It’s amazing to see how many children have, and still do, benefit from programs like Sesame Street, Super Why! and Sid the Science Kid.”

“Everything they air from Nature and Globe Trekker, to local shows like Leahey & Leahey not only inform and educate, but are highly entertaining as well. After all, how many things in life are pleasurable and still good for you? Watching PBS Hawaii is definitely one of them.”

One of the rewards of Allan’s support is the PBS Hawaii Aloha Diners Club Card. “My

friends and I enjoy getting together for dinner, and Shokudo Japanese Restaurant is popular with everyone, as well as Tanaka of Tokyo. So I was glad to see that both of those restau-rants are in the Aloha Diners Club booklet.” With discounts and savings to a variety of res-taurants and merchants across the state, Allan didn’t think twice about renewing his support for our local public television station. “I’m not only helping to provide non-commercial televi-sion for others, but I also receive so many life-enriching benefits in return.”

For a contribution of $65 or more, new and renewing supporters will enjoy the benefits of the Aloha Diners Club Card, and ensure that PBS Hawaii can continue to enrich our community. You can also experience the great savings on dining and entertainment for a new or renewing donation of $65 or more. For more information, call (808) 973-1187 or visit us on the Web at pbshawaii.org. Five year old Dylan Powell could hardly contain his excitement before the Sesame Street Live: Elmo Makes Music show this past June at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall.

As a PBS Keiki Club member, Dylan got a chance to meet Elmo and Ernie in person at the PBS Hawaii Private Pre-Show party. “I was shy at first,” he said, when asked how he felt as the characters came out. Eventually, he warmed up and gave Elmo a big hug and wished him good luck on a great show. With his Sesame Street goody bag in hand, he headed to the Concert Hall along with the other excited children, eager to see their favorite Sesame Street characters performing live.

When the show finally started, Dylan said he wanted to sing and dance with the characters and all the other kids. Asked what his favorite part of the show was, he replied, “They had little cannons that shoot out ribbons that went Woosh! Woosh! Woosh!” The show ended with a big bang and party poppers filled the air. Dylan showed us some souvenir ribbons he picked up from the show. “I also found one of Big Bird’s feathers!”

PBS Hawaii offers educational program-ming that promotes life-long learning for both keiki and their parents. Join the PBS Keiki Club today and receive advance notice to purchase special event tickets to shows like Sesame Street Live.

TONS OF LOVE

NATURE Kilauea: Mountain of Fire | SUNDAY, AUGUST 9 | 7PMKilauea, on Hawaii’s Big Island, is the world’s most active volcano. Its latest eruption began in 1983 and hasn’t stopped. Since that time, it has created 544 acres of new land and consumed 200 homes. But as we watch nature’s own fireworks display and witness the devastation wrought by flowing lava, we’ve also been able to observe a process that’s central to life on these islands. The most spectacular moment of creation is when lava pours into the ocean creating new land; it is here that filmmaker Paul Atkins finds himself getting a shot few have ever filmed: 2,000 degree lava and 75-degree ocean water — a sight to behold.

Burns: The Man and His Times The period 1945- 1975 is often referred to as “The Burns Years” in Hawai’i history books, and right fully so. John A. Burns looms as Hawai’i’s most significant political figure of the last half of the twentieth century. Burns entered politics at the close of World War II, working closely with organized labor leaders and Japanese-American war veterans to forge a Democratic party that would be an instrument of social change in Hawai’i. For twelve years, over the course of three successive terms as governor, Burns helped to shape many important elements of Hawai’i’s social and political structure that continue to this day.9:30 e2 The Village Architect10:00 Globe Trekker Pakistan11:00 PBS Hawaii Presents John A. 9:30 American Horizons: The Photo- graphs of Art Sinsabaugh Art Sin- sabaugh (1924–1983) made his artis- tic breakthrough in the early 1960s with panoramic landscapes of the midwest that were unprecedented in both form and subject matter. He used a giant 12x20-inch “banquet” camera that allowed him to marry a sublime and expansive 19th-century vision with mid-20th century formalism. From his early midwest prairies to the majestic southwest work of his last years, his re- markable photographs capture a richly nuanced sense of place and the ever- changing face of the American environ- ment.
