The Illinois Lion Lioness Leo
Web Magazine Vol. 1 Issue 7 February, 2014
The Forest Kala Sampath Lions Club
celebrated Lions Clubs International
Founder Melvin Jones’ 135th
birthday at the
Four Points Chicago Hotel Sheraton on
January 12, 2014 with great pomp and
grandeur. 8 brand new lions received their
first Melvin Jones Fellow recognition from
LCIF. Among them we had one great donor
who donated $10,000 – Lion Dick Metzger
from Pennsylvania who flew to Chicago just
to attend this program.
PCC Georg Toft conducted re-dedication of
Lions to Lionism.

Melvin Jones Fellows Showing Off at Melvin Jones Birthday Celebration on Jan 12th
Greetings to All 2014 started with much
snow and storms for
everyone and I hope
that everyone has
recovered and repaired
the many frozen water
pipes that I heard about.
We are about to enter
the district convention
season here in MD 1
and I know that there are a lot of dedicated
Lions, Lioness and Leos who are working hard
to get their district convention organized and
the information sent out. It takes a lot of work
to put together a convention and to make sure
that everything goes well, so be sure to thank
them for their hard work and above all make
plans to attend your convention.
District conventions are a great time to
fellowship with members of your district and to
learn more about being a Lion, Lioness or Leo.
Take the time to be involved and also make sure
that you meet and talk with the speaker from
Lions International who will be at your
convention.
I know that many watched the Rose Parade on
New Years Day and I hope that you got to see
the wonderful float that the Lions had in the
Parade. There is a powerful story behind the
making of this float and where the idea came
from. This reminds me of a saying “ YOU
HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE!!”
We do have the power to make a difference in
lives of those we provide eyeglasses or eye
surgery to - we help them to have a better life.
We do have the power to make a difference in
lives of those we provide hearing aids to - we
help them to be better parents, or grandparents
or employees. We do have the power to make a
difference in lives of those that we provide help
after a disaster - we see that they have food and
other things that they need to regain their lives
once again.
We do have the power to make a difference in
the lives of children we send to camp where
they can make new friends and be a kid for
awhile. We do have the power to make a
difference in the lives of those we provide
books to - there is power in reading and
learning.
We do have the power to make a difference in
the lives of those who have been aided with the
Measles Initiative - we have saved lives. We do
have the power to make a difference in the lives
of those in our communities who we ask to join
us as a member of Lions. When we help we get
our hearts and lives touched and that is the true
meaning of being a Lion.
So make a difference - ask someone to join your
Lions, Lioness, or Leo club. The more members
that you have the more hands you have to do the
work and the more hearts that will be touched
by what we do. I also encourage all clubs to do
the CEP (club excellence program) to help your
club to better serve your community.
Let you community know what your club is
doing. Advertise it in every way that you can.
Tell you District Governor about what you have
done. Tell you District Newsletter editor what
you have done. Send it to our State Magazine
editor and let the world know what you have
done and who you have helped.
Remember WE SERVE. Keep up the great
work that you are doing here in MD 1 - attend
your district convention - plan to attend our
state convention in May. Get involved and
YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE –
BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE POWER TO
MAKE A DIFFERENCE. -CC Lydia Ellis

Editorial:
What a chill month of
January gave us!
Weather created quite
a few records just like
Lions in the world
with plenty of
humanitarian services
in their communities.
As we step into seventh month of current
Lionistic year we have to meet several
challenges to meet our target goals. Pretty
soon chill will be gone and spring will
arrive. Time to plant flowers and vegetables
and to bring new members to our clubs to
continue Lions mission locally with global
color.
How many Lions thought of Melvin Jones
the Founder of Lionism in this beautiful
world on his birthday on January 13th
? We
celebrate every other person’s birthday and
how can we forget Melvin Jones? Every
District in MD1 should remember Melvin
Jones and have his birthday celebration in
the month of January. Simultaneously we
can re-dedicate ourselves to true Lionism.
February is the month of loved ones –
Valentines. This is the birthday of St.
Valentine and many of us do not know who
the heck he is! Still we celebrate
Valentine’s Day to give some extra kisses,
hugs, flowers, candy bars, gifts and some
hot drinks to celebrate and have some
personal fun.
Did you invite your Valentine to your Lions
club? Bring her/him in and make them a
Lion and have fun forever rather than having
fun only on Valentine’s Day. I wish you all
a Happy Valentine’s Day!
-IPDG Austin D’Souza
I want to thank the 2013-2014 Council of Governors for your generosity in
providing me with a paid leave of
absence so that I could be with my parents during my father's final days and
for the beautiful calla plant. I also want
to thank all of the Lions who sent
sympathy cards. My family and I are truly grateful for and appreciate each of
these acts of kindness. God bless all of
you!
Yours in Lionism,
Michelle Faires,
State Secretary-Treasurer
A "Thank You!" - Don't let anyone tell you that those who receive help from a Lions Club aren't grateful. This note was received by the Mt. Vernon Lions Club as a result of providing
an eye exam and glasses to a needy individual. This is not the first. There have been others. Mt. Vernon has a history of providing glasses and for working through District programs to provide other needed eyecare. Celebrating its 90th Birthday in 1924, the club has every reason to be proud of its accomplishments and shares a confident hope for its future.

This has been the Season of Joy and Love. I recently received an email from a Lion in my district that made me feel great. It showed me that if you try hard enough and kept it up, good things would happen. As many of you know, my Governor’s Theme is “Service with Compassion.” I’ve stressed it at every meeting and visitation I’ve been to. I tell the story of a French Nobleman who started an organization to help the people who needed the most help after WWII; the elderly. He started by making dinner for the elderly who lost the most after the war and were nearly forgotten. He took those meals and delivered those meals up five flights of stairs to those people. He soon realized that the food wasn’t enough. It may have helped their bodies but it didn’t feed their souls. He needed to give them something else. So, with each meal he brought them some flowers to nourish their souls too. By doing that one extra thing he showed his compassion for them. That simple act of compassion turned his act of service into an act of Love.
I didn’t know if my story reached any Lions. Did they understand how important compassion is to needy people? It isn’t simply the giving of flowers to the needy. It’s the expression of love and caring that the flowers represented. I didn’t expect the Lions in my district to start handing out flowers. I just hoped they would not forget to think about the people they served and why they were providing that service. That is compassion!
The overwhelming response from the Lions, the people of Illinois and the world shows
that we have compassion for those in need, due to the tornado, and our lives and their lives are better for what we are doing.
Now back to the email I received. The email contained a short note which said, “I thought you might be interested in this.”
“Though I should give away to the poor all I possess and even give up my body to be burned – if I am without Love, it will do me no good whatever. 1 Corinthians – 13, 3
Thank you PDG “Hawk” for your compassion!
-DG John E. Pajkos, District 1-K
The Lions of the World will be descending on the
City of Chicago to celebrate their 100th Anniversary
in 2017. The Lions of Illinois, Multiple District 1
will serve as the Host Committee for the Centennial
Convention. It may sound like it is still far away,
but there is a lot to prepare for in the years leading
up to the convention.
The Centennial Convention will be June 30 - July
4, 2017. The main venue will be McCormick Place
and about 8 to 12 hotels will be used to house the
more than 25,000 attendees that are being
anticipated to attend this milestone in our
7
Association’s history. The International Parade is
scheduled for Saturday, July 1 and will march down
either Clark or State Street.
The Host Committee is still in need of LIONS who
are willing to be an active leader. The Host
Committee is responsible to promote the committee
activities and the convention at various functions
throughout the coming years; hosting of the visitors
during their stay in Chicago; the marshalling of the
parade and various sessions that will take place
during the convention and the fund raising to allow
for the committee to carry-out the committee
responsibilities. There are various areas that LION
Leaders are still needed to assist and be an active
member in the planning of the committee’s
activities.
Right now, we have two projects that will step off
our fund raising efforts this Spring. This
Commemorative Pin will be available to all Lions
for a $5.00 donation to the committee. Pins will be
available in later February and at all District
Conventions. The other is a banner patch that will
be given to the club that makes a direct donation to
the committee. There are three levels of donations -
$100.00, $250.00 or $500.00. Each level of
donation will have its own distinct patch.
Over the next couple of years, the Host Committee
will be presenting programs that will inform the
LIONS of ILLINOIS about the duties and
responsibilities that are needed to coordinate the
Hosting of the Centennial Convention. LION
Volunteers will be a big part of this committee with
a lot more information coming as we get closer to
the convention. If you are interested in being an
active leader on the Host Committee, you can reach
Lion Bob Block, PDG at [email protected] or by
phone (219) 671-0287 for additional information.
Remember that there is always a place for
YOU to volunteer.

Genoa-Kingston 2014 Spelling Bee
The Genoa Lions invited the 12 finalists in the
district Spelling Bee to dinner this Wednesday night
(1/15) at the Masonic Temple in Genoa. Three
students from 5th
, 6th
, 7th
, and 8th grades were
successful in their class spelling bees and ready to
spell their way to the regionals to be held at

year’s Genoa-Kingston Spelling Bee was Naomi
Dutton a 5th grader at Genoa Elementary School.
The second place winner was Alex Barton, the son
of Anton & Jennifer Barton, he is a 6th

rounds between these two competitors lasted at least
15 minutes with Alex stumbling on the word
“sumptuous”, forgetting one of the “u’s” in the
middle, Naomi spelled this word correctly and the
final word, and first place was hers. Dinner was
hosted by Lion President Jeff Baker and the Genoa
Lions Club, which provided the trophies for the
First Place winner and runner-up. McDonalds
“Arch Cards”, half of which were donated by the
Genoa McDonalds, were given to each participant
at the end of the evening. Superintendent Joe
Burgess congratulated the spellers and their parents
and introduced Principal Lekkas. Principals Francis
and Lekkas were there to congratulate the students
on their success so far and Mr. Lekkas acted as the
moderator for the Spelling Bee. Ms. Kari White
organized the Spelling Bee and was assisted in

At our Christmas Party, we gave Rodger a "Setting the Standard in Lionism" award for his service. He had several family members at our party, and seemed truly honored and humbled by the award. He is still a very active member of our club despite some health setbacks. He organizes our Christmas
party every year, attends almost every

meeting, and always leads us in song with his soaring tenor voice. Rodger is in the red sweater in the photo, and he's being assisted by Lion President Frank Schulter on the left.

Strasburg Lions gathered to celebrate Christmas together at the Elks club in Effingham. Lions Justin, Bobbie, Brittany, and Rachel took care of all the arrangements and provided an exciting and enjoyable evening. We started the evening off with music and appetizers with a few drinks on the side. The meal (provided by Deb’s Catering) was great.
20
Everyone should have gotten enough food and if you didn’t it was your own fault. After our meal we played a game called “Apples to Apples” with a slight variation. We played with teams instead of individuals. Fun was had by all with lots-of-laughs and a few jabs throughout the evening.
Each Lions brought an unwrapped gift ($10 value) for a boy or a girl. These were then donated to the local “Toys for Tots” organization. It was great knowing we helped make some little boy or girl happy for Christmas. We also take up a collection each year at Christmas to help some family or individual at Christmas time. This year we raised $300 to be donated to an individual to help defray some of the medical cost for a leg brace. This is what Lions do!
Each year the Lions of Strasburg provide

Good little boys and girls when they come to
visit Santa. This year we made 50 sacks for
Santa to give away. Even though the weather
was not good, we had many young boys and
girls (and a few older ones also) come and sit on
Santa’s lap. We were able to give all the sacks
of candy away. It was a great day and everyone
had a great time. Santa had to finally leave but
he promised he would see all the good boys and
girls on Christmas night, (less a few Lions.)

We see it in Lions International magazine when the majors hit somewhere. We did it without even knowing we started an Alert program. Alert can mean anything from being prepared for a small problem in you own neighborhoo d to reacting to a major disaster towns away. No one is free and clear of having something happen to them. We do not live in a p erfect world so we need to be Alert. Our State Chairman Austin mentioned to a group of Lions “that we need to keep safety in mind at all times, don't take short cuts to save a little time, it always comes back to nip us in the backside.” In thinking of the cold months we are now in, how prepared are you if a big snow hit Darien?

Is Your Club Planning for 2014-15?
Is your club planning for Lions’ year 2014-15? Let’s hope so. With a half a year to go in this Lion’s year, now is the time to evaluate the success of service projects, fundraisers,
membership development, and leadership opportunities. This allows club members to plan for the future by tweaking a successful event to make it even better or discarding an event that is less than a success or simply said, an event that is “old and tired”. The following are tips to help your club get ready for a successful new lions’ year as well as finishing this lions’ year with flying colors.
-Keep a file or binder of club events and activities. Include as many details of the event as possible, but limit the info to one page for quick access and review. A new officer or committee chair can refer to this info when making plans for the next successful event.
-Plan a budget for the upcoming year. Ask your members what is important to them. Use this information to outline where the club wants to spend funds. Monitor the budget to monitor spending.
-Plan a club retreat to celebrate the past and plan for future successes. If no one in your club knows how to plan a club retreat, check out the resources available on the LCI website www.lionsclubs.org Go to the search box and put in the words “club retreat”. A guide to planning and hosting a club retreat is available to download.
-Have a transition meeting to share information from the current officers to the new officers as well as the current board to the new board. Communicate!!
-Participate in the Club Excellence Process (CEP). This activity can be facilitated by a Lion from within your district (CEP Pro) or your club (CEP Lite). By completing the Community Needs Assessment, clubs can determine what is needed within their towns or villages and match service projects to needs. How Are Your Ratings is a member satisfaction survey. Happy members tend to be more active!
-Attend new officer training. Each district offers training and insight for new officers. Leadership skills can be enhanced by sharing new ideas with other Lions.
A new Lions’ year is just around the corner. Start your planning now.

PEORIA LIONS ARE FIGHTING FOR THEIR
RIGHT!
-Lion Doug Hampton
The Peoria Heights Suburban Lions Club was recently featured in a front page article of the Sunday Peoria Journal Star. The article discussed the park that the club opened in Peoria Heights in October of 1956.
Charter member Earl Carter said, "It was a great big gully. The village and the club got together and agreed to make a park out of it. They filled it up with limestone and put that around the edges and the village filled it with dirt." The club raised $1,000 for the park's first set of playground equipment.
Unfortunately, over the years the park has lost some of its luster, such as the grass that has filled in the ball diamond infield. With a new hiking/biking trail opening soon adjacent to the park, club member Mary Schlink said “We're going to see a lot more walkers, bicyclists, dog walkers, runners and more stopping by this park. We'd like to really make the park look real nice."
Determined to get the park back in shape and deserving of having the Lions Club name on it, club members startedthe process last summer of fixing up the top priority items. The first step was to replace the roof on the shelter.
Sheridan Road lumber sold them a metal roof at cost and Eric Kelton from All About Gutters put together a crew and installed the roof on a Saturday. The club approached the village and township boards and received $1500 in donations which paid for the roof material.
Two benches were repaired, one is being replaced and a fourth bench is being added. Club members painted and repaired the wooden play structure and picnic tables. They also were able to replace a missing swing, get the shelter floor cleaned up and pulled a lot of weeds.
The club has stayed busy over the years; collecting used eyeglasses, raising the funds to purchase thermal imaging cameras for the local fire department, sponsoring a student of the month program, participating in Peace Poster and many
39
other projects. But the club membership has gone down and the average age has gone up, though as some point out some of their parts aren’t as old (knees, hips, etc).
Club members got done what they could last summer, but there is more to do and they need some help. Their wish list includes landscaping such as bushes and trees, rubber mulch and edging under the play set, new swings and chains, additional play equipment and ideally, a water fountain.
Club member, and a Past District Governor, John Alsworth said, “I saw an older man sitting on a bench once out walking his dog and he told me that the park was a good spot for a rest, that it was part of his daily routine. It's taking care of something that is an important part of the community that makes you feel good."
They've set a fundraising goal of $5,000 to $6,000 and hope to get started when the weather warms. Anyone or any business interested in donating money or time should contact Marsha Westfall at the Peoria Heights Library at 682-5578 ([email protected]).
