  • State Game Lands (SGL) 290 consists of 1,051 acres in multiple tracts. The largest tract, Haldeman Island, consists of 831 acres. One tract (156 acres) lies on Duncan Island just west of Haldeman Island; two tracts (37 and 27 acres) lie on the mainland, 37 acres on the east side and 27 acres on the west side of the Juniata River, west of Haldeman Island. Situated on both the east and west sides of US Route 22/322 at its intersection with US Route 11/15.

SGL 290 is accessible from public roadways and the Susquehanna River. From Amity Hall, Route 11/15 provides the only access, across a bridge, to Haldeman Island. The bridge is open to foot traffic year round, public is prohibited from entering the area(s) marked with prohibited entry signs on the island. During certain huntingseasons, pedestrian traffic is granted across this bridge for limited periods. The entire island is accessible by boat. Duncan Island and Haldeman Island both are accessible from a public parking area and boat launch located on the eastern shore of Duncan Island. Access to the western side of Duncan Island is by parking area off Route 22/322, near the Red Rabbit restaurant. Two tracts located near the cloverleaf junction of 11/15 and 22/322 can be accessed from a right-of-way located along 22/322, north of Benvenue. This right-of-way access may change pending current land exchange negotiations. Access also is possible from the exit ramp for 11/15 from 22/322. The tract north of Duncannon can be accessed from state route 849.

Parking is available at each access area. Although no roads are seasonally open, access points are well distributed. Due to high hunting pressure during peak periods, opening roads to vehicular traffic would present serious safety concerns. However, the existing network of administrative roads and trails provides excellent pedestrian access to most of the gamelands.

A wildlife propagation area, comprising the entire northern half of Haldeman Island, includes approximately 360 acres closed to public access year-round. A 100-acre extension of the propagation area is closed during February through August. Small safety zones extend into the 27-acre detached tract.

SGL 290 lies in two wildlife management units (WMU). The western shore of the Susquehanna River forms the boundary between WMU 4C and 4B; therefore, Haldeman Island is included in WMU 4C. Parcels on Duncan Island and the mainland lie within WMU 4B.

SGL 290 provides a variety of hunting opportunities for waterfowl, deer, and small-game, as well as hunting and trapping opportunities for furbearers. The wetland habitats on Haldeman Island are ideally suited for waterfowl hunting and furtaking, all of which are permitted outside the propagation area.

    SPORTSMEN'S RECREATION MAP

Each time a hunter buys a hunting license, the

money he spends goes toward many facets of

wildlife management. Since 1920, close to a million

and a half aces of State Game Lands have been

acquired with these funds. Each year nearly

$7,000,000 is spent to improve wildlife habitat.

Habitat improvements enhance living conditions for

non-game birds and mammals as well as those

species which are hunted. Pennsylvania hunters

willingly share these lands with the non-hunting

public, and with few exceptions, State Game Lands

are open for general use year round. Surveys

indicate that hunting accounts for only thirty-five

percent of game land usage. The remaining sixty-

five percent is used by the general public for non-

    hunting purposes.

“Working Together for Wildlife” is a Game

    Commission program providing everyone an

opportunity to help support wildlife management in

the areas for endangered and non-game animals.

Monies derived from the “Working Together for

Wildlife” Program are being used in Pennsylvania to

re-introduce the osprey, river otter, bald eagle,

peregrine falcon and provide habitat for other birds

and mammals indigenous to the Commonwealth.

Construction placement of blue bird houses on State

Game Lands provides needed homes for this

beautiful songbird. Islands in the Susquehanna River

have been set aside as propagations areas for non-

game shore birds. Numerous other projects are

planned on State Game Lands and other public
