John Wall, Transport for NSW

The NSW Government has set a clear target to reduce road fatalities by 30% by 2021, and a longer term aspirational goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads. Similar aspirational goals are shared by jurisdictions around the world.

The Safe System approach developed in Sweden provides a framework to achieve Vision Zero and focuses on people, vehicles, roads and speeds. Where does the connected and automated vehicle of tomorrow fit into the safe systems approach?

John Wall’s team within Transport for NSW runs Australia’s only Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) testbed and the largest heavy vehicle focused CITS project in the world. He is in a great position to sort the hype from the reality and provide delegates with an understanding of how important a role connected and automated vehicles will play in the march towards zero.

Rita Excell, Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative

The future of mobility is set to change. The Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative (ADVI), is the national leader bringing together industry, government and academia to harness the driverless vehicle revolution – and it’s happening fast! Rita will update us on the exciting and endless opportunities, highlighting some of the key social, economic and business factors that will drive the introduction of this technology. The next 10 years will see a significant transformation in the way we move -how can Local Government prepare their communities for this change to derive the predicted benefits early and safeguard against the disruption?

Michael Foxman, Tamworth Regional Economic Development Corporation

This presentation will discuss key focus areas essential to the development of integrated intermodal and industrial complexes for regional Australia.

Resulting from personal ambitions and private investment, Regional Intermodal Development has become a new economic success for investors, business and consumers.

Michael Foxman will convey proprietary thought-processes that enable planners to more effectively consider commercial risk, opportunities, and develop strategy that determine the viability of developments.

Systems that contribute to speed to market and sound return on investment. His presentation will incorporate discussions about regional industrial infrastructure across the USA, ASEAN territories and how Australian enterprise can connect with these to enhance feasibility and operational targets of Australian planned developments.

Saturday 10 Nov 9am-1pm:Add-on Young IPWEA Workshop by Ben Chopping

Introduction• The three essential supervisory skills (as defined in the

Training within Industry Program) are key to getting the operational results all organisations seek.

• Many production or service results stem from the actions of immediate leaders (e.g. leading hand, foreperson, and supervisor).

• Rather than do work in an area, a supervisor leads the people who do it (the workers).

• A good supervisor must be a good leader.

The Skill of Leading• To lead people doing and improving work, a supervisor needs

respect.• Many say this can’t be taught. Yet, while deep respect may

depend on the person, the Job• Relations (JR) skill can be learnt.• While ‘natural’ leaders who use JR will be highly respected,

even non-natural leaders who use JR can earn respect.

Learn, do, excel• As the JR skills can be learnt, people can become brilliant at

them with practice.• Yet many organisations assume supervisors already have

these skills.• If a worker is promoted to supervisor for being good at doing

the work, it doesn’t mean they’ll be good at leading workers. They need to be taught JR.

1. How to handle people problems, how to prevent them from occurring, and, most importantly in developing a logical, common sense approach to handling issues with a people-centric view.

2. The foundations of positive employee relations. Developing and maintaining these good relationships prevents problems from arising and is paramount to earn loyalty and cooperation from others.

3. A proven method of getting the facts, weighing options, deciding, taking action, and checking results.

One of the key “ingredients” of this session is the on-the-job component that immediately getsyou to use the method on the real-life problems you encounter every day. The purpose of oursession is for you to learn the 4-Step Method of Job Relations and the very best way of doingthat is to actually apply it—to learn by doing. Each participant will be required to bring apeople problem to the session.

CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Wednesday 8 Nov 1pm-5pm:Add-On Executive Masterclass by Peter Berry

The Hogan Assessment – Working Towards Leadership

This half day session will focus on: Building a high performing culture Values supported by behaviours The importance and impact of values People being role models

Peter Berry has many years of experience using the Hogan Assessments as an input to masterclasses. This evidence based approach helps maximize the effectiveness of any initiative. The MVPI (motives, values, and preferences inventory – The Inside of Personality, provide great insights into the type of work environment or culture a leader is likely to create, as well as the type of environment in which person will be most productive.

The MVPI will add a ‘wow’ factor to this masterclass and provide the following insight: Self-awareness Personal values Alignment of values with your organisation Occupational preferences Personal development information and a plan to work on.

The Hogan Insight SeriesThe insight series is a multi-purpose tool and can be used for candidate screening, on-boarding, employee and leadership development, high potential programs, succession management, team building and organizational analysis. The insight series places an emphasis on the importance of self-awareness in the career development proves. It also includes a high level summary of assessment results that outlines behavioral implications and descriptions of how individuals might appear as leaders, as well as discussion questions designed to facilitate conversations with colleagues and superiors and encourage self-reflection. The insight series features a fresh layout that is more accessible for broader audiences and includes greater insights into the drivers of behavior through the addition of MVPI subscales.

Prior to the masterclass, every attendee will undergo Hogan Personality Assessment (MVPI).

Peter will take you through your results and action them for long lasting results.

This assessment consists of world class instruments that identify development opportunities, strengths, shortcomings, blind spots and hidden talents. They have been used by global and Australian organisations and are recognized with academia as being valid and reliable measures of personality.
