advanced practice registered nurses (A.P.R.N.). Each state has its own requirements for licensing

nurse practitioners. This document is a state-by-state guide to the requirements necessary to become

Arizona Nurse Practitioner Requirements

The Arizona Board of Nursing grants approval for Advanced Practice Nursing in three categories:

Arkansas Nurse Practitioner Requirements

Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)Successful completion of a graduate level organized program of nursing education that prepares nurses

for the advanced practice role of advanced nurse practitioner; and

Current certification as a nurse practitioner by a nationally recognized certifying body which meets the

requirements of Section VII of this Chapter.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)Satisfactory completion, beyond generic nursing preparation, of a formal graduate level educational

program that meets the standards of the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational

Programs or another nationally recognized accrediting body that has as its objective preparation of nurses

to perform as nurse anesthetists; and

Current certification from the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists, Council on Re-certification of

Nurse Anesthetists, or another nationally recognized certifying body which meets the requirements of

Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)Successful completion of a graduate level program of nursing education that prepares nurses for the

advanced practice role of nurse midwife;

Current certification as a nurse midwife from the American College of Nurse Midwives, or another

nationally recognized certifying body which meets the requirements of Section VII of this Chapter; and

Written agreement with a consulting physician if providing intrapartum care.

Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)Master's degree evidencing successful completion of a graduate program in nursing, which shall include

supervised clinical practice and classroom instruction in a nursing clinical practice specialty; and

Current certification in a specialty role as a clinical nurse specialist from a nationally recognized certifying

body which meets the requirements of Section VII of this Chapter.

California Nurse Practitioner Requirements

Connecticut Nurse Practitioner Requirements

Hold a current Connecticut registered nurse license;

Hold and maintain current certification as a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, or nurse anesthetist

from one of the following national organizations:

The American Nurses' Association

The National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties;

The National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses;

The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists ;

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners;

The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation; or

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses CCNS certification;

Thirty (30) hours of education in pharmacology for advanced nursing practice;

a master’s degree in nursing or in a related field recognized for certification as a nurse practitioner, a

clinical nurse specialist or a nurse anesthetist

Georgia Registered Professional Nurse Act outlines the specific requirements for Georgia nurses and

nurse practitioners.

Hawaii Nurse Practitioner Requirements

Completed an accredited graduate-level education program leading to a master's degree as a certifiedregistered nurse anesthetist, a nurse midwife, a clinical nurse specialist, or a nurse practitioner;

A current, u nencumbere d certification of havin g pa ssed a national certification e xamination that measures

role and population-focused competencies and is recognized by the board;

Maintained continued competencies through re-certification in role and population-focused competencies

through a national certification program recognized by the board;

Acquired advanced clinical knowledg e an d skill s prepa ring the nurse to provid e di rect care to patien ts

through a significant educational and practical concentration on the direct care of patients;

Demonstrated a greater breadth of knowledge, a greater synthesis of data, greater complexity of skills and

interventions, and greater role autonomy than demonstrated by a registered nurse;

Been educationally prepared to assume responsibility and accountability for health promotion and

maintenance and to assess, diagnose, and manage patient problems through the use and prescription of

pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions;

Acquired clinical experien ce of sufficient dep th and breadth to reflect the inten ded license; a nd

Paid the appropriate fees.

Requirements for an NP license include:

Meet one of the following criteria

Complete a formal, post-basic nursing education program located or offered in Kansas that has been

approved by the board and prepares the nurse to function in the advanced role for which application

is made

Complete a formal, post-basic nursing education program that is not located or offered in Kansas but

is determined by the board to meet the standards for program approval established by K.A.R. 60-17-

101 through 60-17-108

Have completed a formal, post-basic nursing education program that may be no longer in existence

but is determined by the board to meet standards at least as stringent as those required for program

approval by the board at the time of graduation

Hold a current certificate of authority to practice as an advanced registered nurse practitioner in the

Required completion of a program meeting standards equal to or greater than those established

by K.A.R. 60-17-101 through 60-17-108 or

Complete a formal educational program of post-basic study and clinical experience that can be

demonstrated by the applicant to have sufficiently prepared the applicant for practice in the category

of advanced practice for which application is made. The applicant shall show that the curriculum of

the program is consistent with public health and safety policy and that it prepared individuals to

perform acts generally recognized by the nursing profession as capable of being performed by

persons with post-basic education in nursing.

1,000 hours of advanced nursing practice during the five years preceding the date of application

Master's degree or a higher degree in nursing or area of specilization

Licensure

Louisiana Nurse Practitioner Requirements

Areas of advanced practice nurses include:

Certified nurse midwife or "CNM" who is an advanced practice registered nurse educated in the

disciplines of nursing and midwifery and certified according to a nationally recognized certifying body,

such as the American College of Nurse Midwives Certification Council, as approved by the board and who

is authorized to manage the nurse midwifery care of newborns and women in the antepartum, intrapartum,

postpartum, and/or gynecological periods.

Certified registered nurse anesthetist or "CRNA" who is an advanced practice registered nurse

educated in the field of nurse anesthesia and certified according to the requirements of a nationally

recognized certifying body such as the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or the Council on

Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists, as approved by the board and who is authorized to select and

administer anesthetics or ancillary services to patients under their care.

Clinical nurse specialist or "CNS" who is an advanced practice registered nurse educated in a

recognized nursing specialty area who is certified according to the requirements of a nationally

recognized certifying body such as the American Nurses Association's American Nurses Credentialing

Center, as approved by the board and who is authorized to provide direct nursing care to a select

population in a recognized nursing specialty area, and plans, guides, and directs care given by other

nursing personnel.

Nurse practitioner or "NP" who is an advanced practice registered nurse educated in a specified area of

care and certified according to the requirements of a nationally recognized accrediting agency such as:

the American Nurses Association's American Nurses Credentialing Center

National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties

Minnesota Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Requirements

27 states require NPs to have a masters degree in nursing.

Mississippi Nurse Practitioner RequirementsGraduated from a nationally approved school of nursing with a masters degree or higher;

Taken and passed a national certification exam in the area of your practice;

Submitted an initial application with all appropriate documents approved prior to practicing;

Completed a 720 hours residency that was monitored by either a licensed physician or certified APRN and

evidence of this must be submitted to the Board of Nursing and accepted in order to begin unmonitored

practice and be eligible to apply for controlled substance privilege;

Application renewed every two (2) yea rs October - December of even numbered years.

Meet the general requirements of Nur 302.01;

Hold a current and unencumbered RN license issued by the board or a multi-state license issued by

another compact state;

Have either:

Earned a graduate degree in an accredited advanced registered nurse practitioner education

program; or

Graduated before July 1, 2004 from an ARNP education program accredited by a national accrediting

body that meets the requirements of Nur 600;
