BIO-TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGYGOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA
The department is engaged in the administration of Science and
Technology activities in the State. Department supports the
organisations such as Karnataka Science and Technology Promotion
Society (KSTePS), Karnataka Science and Technology Academy
(KSTA), Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology
(KSCST), Vision Group on Science and Technology (VGST), Karnataka
Rajya Vijnana Parishat (KRVP), Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium
(JNP), Karnataka State Remote Sensing Applications Centre (KSRAC),
KEONICS, Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS).
Department also sponsors need based research projects and
recognises meritorious work in Science and Technology in the State
through awards.

An autonomous S&T organization under Department of Science & Technology,
Government of Karnataka established in 1975. It has been pro-actively
engaging itself to identify, propose and implement S&T based solutions to
locale speci�ic needs / problems in the broad areas of water, education, energy,
housing, geospatial technologies, environment and other outreach activities.
Over the years, a number of technologies have been translated, from research
and demonstration phase, to the implementation and operational phase.
Vision :
Application of Science & Technology for the management of resources,
improvement of environment, quality of life & socio-economic conditions of
the people of Karnataka.
Mission :
Co-Ordinate R & D activities for generation of knowledge for scienti�ically
based interventions, development & popularization of appropriate
technologies for adaptation by the civil society to overcome locale speci�ic
problems, inspire and improve human resources of the S&T sectors in the
state.

Dr. C. N. Manjunath, born in 1957 in Cholenahalli, Hassan District,
Karnataka, obtained MBBS (1982), from Mysore Medical College, MD
(Gen. Medicine - 1985) from BMC and DM (Cardiology - 1988) from
K M C , M a n i p a l . I n 1 9 8 9 , h e j o i n e d S r i J aya d e va I n s t i t u t e o f
Cardiovascular Science & Research, Bangalore and presently he is serving as
Director and Professor of Cardiology since 2006.
Dr. Manjunath has brought revolutionary changes in the system and has proved that Government Institutions
can also function like Five Star Corporate Hospitals. This remarkable progress has been achieved during ten
years under his dynamic leadership as the Director of the Institute. The Institute has recorded 500% growth
and bed strength is increased from 250 to 1250 making Jayadeva Hospital as one of the largest Heart Institute in
South East Asia and the Institute has been accorded NABH Accreditation. This is the only Public Health
Institution in the country to get this distinction. The Institute is working on a novel slogan ‘Every needy patient
shall be given a quality treatment irrespective of �inancial affordability’. He has effectively implemented the
concept – ‘Treatment First Payment Next’. He has also established ‘Poor Patient Corpus Fund’ (Rs. 50.00 Crores)
and the interest generated is used for poor and needy patients. Dr. C. N. Manjunath is instrumental in establishing
State of Art 400 Bedded Hospital at Mysore and 130 Bedded Hospital at Kalaburagi.
The Institute is running country’s biggest Post Graduate Course in Superspeciality D.M.Cardiology producing
Cardiologists for the State as well as the country and the Institute is also training Cardiologists from USA, UK,
France, Vietnam and other countries. Former American President Barack Obama has applauded Institute work
for providing quality class treatment at an affordable cost.
Dr. Manjunath has published several research papers in journals and conferences of national and international
repute. He has innovated a Technique of performing Balloon Valvuloplasty, which is called Manjunath’s
Technique. Left Atrial Thrombus Classi�ication is also called as Manjunath’s Classi�ication. He has 30 years of
teaching experience and has guided many students. Under his able leadership, a record number of patients have
been treated and country’s highest number of cathlab procedures such as Angiograms, Angioplasties, Stenting,
Balloon Valvuloplasties, Device Closures, Permanent Pacemaker Implantations etc. were performed
Recently, European Heart Journal has published Jayadeva Hospital as “Cardiac Centre of Excellence” which is a
rare distinction. IIM, Bangalore, London School of Economics, Leadership College of Singapore, Yale University
of Management - USA and Austrian Medical Delegates visited the Hospital to study the Cost effective quality care
to the cross sections of the society and appreciated the world class facility provided to a common man.
Dr. Manjunath is a recipient of several prestigious awards - Karnataka Rajyotsava Award (1998), Sir C V Raman
Young Scientist Award (2001), Padmashree (2007), Millennium Plaque of Honour by Hon’ble Prime Minister of
India (2016), 5 Honorary doctorates from various Universities and Leadership Award from Canada and is also a
Past President of Indian College of Cardiology.

PROF. S. RAMASESHAScience and Technology
Prof. S. Ramasesha, born in 1950 in Tumkur, received BSc (Hons)
(Chemistry, 1968) from Bangalore University, MSc (Chemistry, 1970) and PhD
(Chemistry, 1977) from IIT, Kanpur. He joined as an Assistant Professor in the
Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit (SSCU) at the Indian Institute of
Science (IISc), Bengaluru in 1984. He later was an Associate Professor (1990-1995), Professor (1995-2006), and
Super time-scale Professor (2006-15) in SSCU. He also served as Science Dean (2014-15) in the Institute. Since
2015, he is serving as INSA Senior Scientist and Honorary Professor at SSCU and is involved in research, training
and guiding students.
Prof. Ramasesha, worked in the area of many-body theories for electronic structure and magnetism in his career
spanning over four decades. He developed the valence-bond (VB) method to solve problems in magnetism of
low-dimensional and molecular systems as well as electronic structure of theory of extended and molecular π-
conjugated systems. He has solved the long standing problem of simultaneous spin and spatial symmetry
adaptation for solving large many-body systems. He later developed the Density Matrix Renormalization Group
(DMRG) method for application to large molecular and extended systems. He applied the techniques he
developed to study many important problems in the device physics of organic systems. He showed how the
theoretical limit, of 1:3 branching ratio of singlets to triplets, is breached in electron-hole recombination
process. He also explained why some conjugated molecules �luoresce while others do not.
Prof. Ramasesha has published 216 research papers in journals of national and international repute, besides
publishing several popular articles. Under his guidance, 21 students have been awarded PhD and 2 students are
working for the same. Besides, he has guided 9 students for Master’s thesis. He has edited 2 books and has
contributed 12 chapters in books.
Prof. Ramasesha is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (1992), the Indian National Science
Academy (2005) and the World Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries. He is a recipient of several
prestigious awards, citations and honors - Indian National Science Academy Medal for Young Scientists (1978),
B.M. Birla National Science Prize in Chemistry (1990), Honorary Fellow (1991-98) and Honorary Professor
(1998-2016) of Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scienti�ic Research, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, CSIR

PROF. G. U. KULKARNIScience Education
Prof. G. U. Kulkarni, born in 1963 in Dharwad, received MSc (Physics, 1986)
from Karnataka University, PhD (Physics, 1992) from Indian Institute of
Science, Bangalore (IISc). He did his postdoctoral research at IISc and Cardiff
University, UK (1992-95). He joined Jawarharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced
Scienti�ic Research, Bangalore (JNCASR) in 1995 as Faculty Fellow, and then
served as Associate Professor (2001-07), Professor (2007-till date), Associate Chair (2007-08) and Chair in
Chemistry and Physics of Materials Unit (2008-11). Further, he served as Dean, Academic (2011-13) and Dean,
Faculty Affairs (2013-15). He is a visiting Scientist at Cardiff University, Tokyo University, TASC-INFM, Trieste,
Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Purdue University and IMRE-Singapore. He was Adjunct Research Professor,
Birck Nanotechnology Centre, Purdue University (2011-13). Currently, since 2015, he is Director, Centre for
Nano and Soft Matter Sciences, Bangalore. Prof. Kulkarni has made contributions in many areas of nanomaterials, developing nanotools and prototype
device fabrication, molecular systems and their properties etc. He has employed solid-state chemistry principles
to nanomaterial synthesis which paved way, for the �irst time, to direct patterning by various lithography tools.
Thus, the potential of metal-organic precursors, as single source precursors for patterned synthesis of a variety
of nanomaterials, has been realized and this has been applied effectively in e-beam lithography and soft-
modelling. The functionality of the patterned materials is clearly demonstrated in prototype devices such as
sensors. This is a �ine example of chemistry, applied to high-end device research.
Prof. Kulkarni has 275 papers in Journals and 18 papers in Conferences of national and international repute.
Under his guidance, 17 students have been awarded PhD, 8 students are working for it and 7 students have
received MS, one student is working for the same. He has authored 16 book chapters and has applied for 20
patents, both national and international. He is a Member of Editorial Advisory Board of many journals, such as
ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Scienti�ic Reports, Materials Science. He is a Member of Vision Group on
Nanotechnology, Department of IT-BT, Government of Karnataka and International Science Committee of ICS-
UNICO.
Prof. Kulkarni is a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, Indian Academy of Sciences, Asia Paci�ic Academy of
Materials (APAM), Sheikh Saqr Senior Fellow (2012-14), International Senior Fellow of University of Bayreuth
(2016), Adjunct Member of Faculty for Science and Technology, Gulbarga University. He is a recipient of many
awards and medals - Material Research Society of India Lecture Medal (1999), Sir C. V. Raman Young Scientist
Award (1999), B. M. Birla Science prize in Chemistry (2002), Chemical Research Society of India Lecture Medal
(2003), Prof. CNR Rao Oration Award (2006), MRSI-ICSC Superconductivity and Materials Science Annual Prize

DR. PRATIMA MURTHYScience Education
Dr. Pratima Murthy, born in 1961 in Bangalore, was the best outgoing
student of Sophia High School. She received MBBS (1985) from Bangalore
Medical College, both Diploma and MD in Psychological Medicine from
NIMHANS (1985-1989) and a Diploma from the University of Manchester, UK
(1993). She received an honorary FRCP (2015) from University of Glasgow,
UK. She joined NIMHANS as Assistant Professor, in the Department of Psychiatry, (1993-1998), Associate
Professor (1998-2003), Additional Professor (2003-05) and Professor (2005-till date). She served as Head, De-
addiction Services for 8 years. She is presently the Head of the Department of Psychiatry and the forensic
psychiatric services at NIMHANS.
Dr. Pratima Murthy has established tobacco cessation services and quit line at NIMHANS. She has also
established a toxicology laboratory there. She has several publications and has developed several educational,
training material and manuals for substance use and addiction treatment and prevention. She has also helped to
set up a Heritage Museum at NIMHANS.
Dr. Pratima Murthy has published 136 papers in journals and made several presentations in conferences of
national and international repute. Further she has published 14 articles in newsletters, 15 monographs and has
contributed for 27 chapters in books. She has also written many popular articles and produced educational
videos. Under her guidance, 12 students have been awarded PhD, 4 students are working for it and 26 students
have completed MD/DM, 6 students are working for the same. She has been training postgraduates and lay-
counselors in mental health and also creating awareness in general public on substance use disorders and
mental health. She was a member of Sub-committee on Health Outcomes for Niti Ayog (2018) and NHRC
Committee on Health. She has been the lead author of human rights reports on the care of the mentally ill, in
institutions in India.
Dr. Pratima Murthy is Life Fellow, International Medical Sciences Academy, Indian Psychiatric Society (South
Zone and Karnataka), Honorary Member, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (FRCP), International Fellow,
Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK). She has received the Marfatia Senior Psychiatrists’ Award for Best Paper,
presented at the Indian Psychiatric Society Annual Conference, New Delhi (1992), WHO Prize for Best
Performance in Diploma in Psychological Medicine for Psychiatrists from Developing Countries, University of
Manchester (1993), Tilak Venkoba Rao Oration Award of the Indian Psychiatric Society (2001), Poona
Psychiatric Association Award, Indian Psychiatric Society (2013), Mangalwedhe Oration on Alcohol
Dependence, KIMS Hubli, CME (2015).
In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Pratima Murthy is recognised as a model professional and a
compassionate doctor. Her simplicity, concern for her patients’ welfare, her simple demeanour and her
professional competence is inspirational.

PROF. ANNAPURNI SUBRAMANIAM
Physical Sciences
Prof. Annapurni Subramaniam, born in 1968 in Palakkad, Kerala,
obtained MSc (Physics, 1990) from Calicut University and PhD (Astrophysics,
1996) jointly from Bangalore University and Indian Institute of Astrophysics
(IIA). She joined IIA, in 1998, as Visiting Fellow, and has served as Scientist
(2000-07), Reader (2007-10) and Associate Professor (2010-16). Currently, since 2016, she is serving as
Professor and is involved in teaching and research. She is also the calibration scientist for the UV Imaging
Telescope (UVIT) on-board India’s �irst space observatory, ASTROSAT.
Prof. Annapurni Subramaniam has compiled and predicted its performance before the launch, planned and
completed calibration after its launch. She developed a mandatory tool for UVIT observations. She is heading the
Indian wing of Observatory Software, with the responsibility for delivery, starting from 2019, for the Thirty
Meter Telescope (TMT), being built by an international consortium with India as a partner.
Prof. Annapurni Subramaniam has 79 research publications in Journals and 41 publications in Conference
Proceedings of national and international repute. These publications include topics, such as star clusters, stellar
populations, galaxies near the milky way and ultra-violet astronomy. She has delivered number of invited talks in
international conferences. Under her guidance, 6 students have been awarded PhD and 6 students are working
for it. Presently, she is leading a strong and productive group in the �ield of star formation and stellar evolution
not only in our galaxy but also in nearby galaxies, like Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, using star clusters and
stellar populations as a tool.
Prof. Annapurni Subramaniam is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences, Life
member of International Astronomical Union and Astronomical Society of India and Kavli Fellow, instituted by
Kavli foundation and National Academy of Sciences, USA.

DR. RANJANI VISWANATHA
Chemical Sciences
Dr. Ranjani Viswanatha, born in 1979 in Mysore, received MS (Chemistry)
and PhD (Chemistry) from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. She has
worked as a postdoctoral fellow at University of Arkansas, USA (2007-08) and
at Los Alamos National Lab, USA (2008-11). She joined Jawarharlal Nehru
Centre for Advanced Scienti�ic Research, Bangalore (JNCASR) in 2011, worked as a Faculty Fellow (2011-17),
and has moved up to become Associate Professor. Currently, since 2017, she is serving as Associate Professor and
is involved in teaching and guiding postgraduate and research students.
Dr. Ranjani Viswanatha has developed materials for LED applications with low heat and high light conversion by
altering the interface of materials which can revolutionize the �ield. Her work includes educating future
generations of students, actively demonstrating the excitement of learning science through experiments, as well
as writing popular articles to spread the knowledge among the public. She has developed ‘Science Ambassador
Programme’ that is used by global young academy of sciences. Her research has been involved, directly and
indirectly, in the development of several technological advances, leading to substantial social change.
Dr. Ranjani Viswanatha has published 70 research papers in journals of national and international repute. She is
also a reviewer in many of the leading journals and has given several talks in leading conferences. Under her
guidance, 2 students have been awarded PhD, 5 students are working for it and 3 students have received
postgraduate degree/diploma and a student is working for the same. She has been heading an independent
research group. Her work on ‘Correlation of microstructure with the optical properties’ has been well
recognised in the community and was highlighted in C&E News. She has applied for two Indian patents.
Dr. Ranjani Viswanatha is a Founder-member of Indian National Young Academy of Science (2015), Indian
representative in the Second Worldwide Meeting of Young Academies (2015). She is an Editorial Board Member
of Scienti�ic Reports and Associate of Indian Academy of Sciences (2013). She is a recipient of several awards –
Indian National Science Academy Young Scientist Medal (2014), Sheikh Saqr Career Award Fellow (2015), DST
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Young Career Award (2017), SERB Women Scientist Award (2017) and MRSI
Award (2018).

DR. M.M. SRINIVASA BHARATH
Life Sciences
Dr. Srinivas Bharath, born in 1971 in Bangalore, obtained MSc
(Biochemistry, 1994) with �irst rank and gold medal from University of
Mysore and PhD (Biochemistry, 2002) from the Indian Institute of Science
(IISc), Bangalore. He worked as a Student Fellow in the University of
Melbourne (2000) and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Buck Institute for Age Research, California (2001-05).
He obtained the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation-National Parkinson Foundation joint postdoctoral fellowship
(USA) (2003-04), National Parkinson Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship, USA (2004-05) and International
research grant from Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, USA (2005-07). He joined the Department of
Neurochemistry, NIMHANS, as a faculty member in 2005 and has served as Assistant Professor (2005-09),
Associate Professor (2009-12), Additional Professor (2012-18), Adjunct Faculty Member (Clinical
Neurosciences) (2015-18) and Professor (since 2018). Currently, he is serving as Professor and Head of the
Department of Clinical Psychopharmacology and Neurotoxicology, NIMHANS.
Dr. Bharath has contributed to the understanding of redox and mitochondrial dynamics in brain and muscle
during normal health and disease. He played a major role in establishing a “Neurotoxicology laboratory” in
NIMHANS, which is now elevated to a department. He played a crucial role in establishing one-of-its-kind special
diagnostics in India for mitochondrial diseases and muscular dystrophy.
Dr. Bharath has published 67 research papers including �ive cover page articles in research journals of national
and international repute. He has contributed to 4 book chapters and 49 publications in conference proceedings.
Under his guidance, 5 students have completed postdoctoral work, 11 students have been awarded PhD, 7
students are working for PhD and 5 students have carried out MPhil/DM research. He has also contributed to the
popularization of science through television and radio programs, educational videos, popular articles and short
stories for which he has received awards.
Dr. Bharath has been elected as Member of National Academy of Sciences (India). He is a recipient of Best
Presentation Award, Kannada Science Congress, Bangalore (2010), Young Investigator Award, International
Society for Neurochemistry (2010-11) and Young Investigator Award, Asia-Paci�ic Society for Neurochemistry

DR. PADUBIDRI V. SHIVAPRASAD
Agriculture Sciences & Animal Husbandry
Dr. Padubidri V. Shivaprasad, born in 1974, a native of Udupi, obtained MSc
from Mangalore University (Applied Botany, 1998) where he obtained �irst
rank and gold medal in the University. He obtained CSIR fellowship to pursue
PhD that he completed in Madurai Kamaraj University under the supervision
of Prof. K. Veluthambi (Biotechnology, 2005). During PhD, he used a novel RNA interference-based method to
develop resistance against plant viruses. He was an SNF/EMBO postdoctoral fellow in University of Basel,
Switzerland (2006-07), where he identi�ied mechanisms by which viruses countered host defence. As a
Postdoctoral Research Associate (2008-12) in University of Cambridge, UK, working with Sir (Prof) David
Baulcombe, he made two important discoveries-(1) �inding a mechanism behind heritable hybrid phenotypes;
and (2) identifying a micro RNA switch that regulates disease resistance across plants. Currently, he is serving as
Associate Professor at National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore.
Dr. Shivaprasad, at NCBS, has made two important �indings–identifying role of small RNAs in rice domestication
(�irst time for any domestication event) and development of technologies to counter both biotic and abiotic
stresses in plants. In 2013, he established a new laboratory at NCBS, partly with the support from Ramanujan
Fellowship (DST, Govt. of India) to study how small RNAs and epigenetics play roles in development so that novel
crops that are high yielding and stress-tolerant can be generated.
Dr. Shivaprasad has some highly cited publications, especially in the area of gene silencing and epigenetics. He
has published 25 research papers in journals of national and international repute, contributed for 3 book
chapters and has applied for a patent. Under his guidance, 2 students have been awarded PhD, 6 students are
working for it and 2 students have received postgraduate degree. He is an Editorial Member for Science Matters
(2016-till date) and Special Editor to Frontiers in Plant Science (2018-19).
Dr. Shivaprasad is a recipient of Swiss Society for Psychiatry Award (2006) and has been awarded European
Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Fellowship in 2007 and Ramanujan Fellowship by DST, Govt. of India in
2013.

Dr. Shayan Srinivas Garani, born in 1975 in Mysuru, received BE (Elec &
Comm, 1997) from University of Mysore, MS (Electrical & Computer Engg,
2001) from University of Florida and PhD (Electrical & Computer Engg, 2006)
from Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. After his PhD, he worked as Senior
Innovative Systems Architect (2006-10) with ST Microelectronics, San Diego, USA, as Senior Engineering
Manager (2010-12) with Western Digital, Irvine, USA. Further, in 2012, he joined Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore, and he has served as Assistant Professor (2012-18) in Dept. of Electronic Systems Engineering.
Currently, since 2018, he is serving as Associate Professor and is involved in advanced research in theoretical and
experimental frontier areas and guiding research and postgraduate students.
Dr. Garani is a pioneer in physical data storage. He has extensively worked on all aspects of channel engineering

iterative signal detection methods, 2D generalized partial response equalization, 2D SOVA detection with noise
prediction, 2D LDPC codes, 2D defect detection and erasure, 2D joint GBP detection and error correction, 2D
timing methods that include 2D PLL based, interpolative timing recovery based and iterative timing and signal
detector.
Dr. Garani has published 18 research papers in journals and 43 papers in Conferences of national and
international repute. He has 12 US patents. Key among them are - ef�icient on-the-�ly encoder, zero latency
interleaver, defect detector and adaptive data dependent noise predictor. For these patents, he bagged
innovative patent awards, retentive bonuses and many incentives. He also led circuit designers and veri�ication
teams to put LDPC coded architecture on a 40 nm technology. His work on 2D joint self-iterating detection and
equalizer engine and an iterative multi-track signal detector which gives 8 dB of signi�icant coded SNR gain with
LDPC codes (highly cited patents) stand towering. He was also involved in leading efforts for designing the best-
in-class LDPC codes for solid state memories over the 28 nm technology. He has �iled for four patents at IISc.
Dr. Garani is a Senior Member of IEEE and Optical Society of America (OSA). He was Chairman, Photonic
Detection Group, OSA and Vice-Chair (Academics) IEEE Data Storage Society. He is a recipient of Infosys Nortel
Project of the Year Award (1999), ST Microelectronics Patent Invention Awards (2006 & 2010) and Western
Digital-Master Inventor Awards (2010 & 2012).

Dr. C. D. Madhusoodana, born in 1968 in Kasargod, Kerala, obtained BE
(Cermics, 1989) from Gulbarga University, MSc (Engg) (Materials Research,
1997) from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Diploma in Advanced
Research (Chem Engg, 2000) and PhD (Ceramic Engg, 2006) from Tokyo
Institute of Technology, Japan. He worked on zeolite membranes and �ilms for his PhD. In 1991, he joined Ceramic
Technological Institute, BHEL, Bangalore, as a Scientist and has worked in various capacities during his 27 years
of service. Currently, he is serving as Additional General Manager and Head and is involved in R&D on Ceramics &
Advanced Materials for Energy and Environment.
Dr. Madhusoodana, during his R&D career on Ceramic & Advanced materials, has developed and demonstrated
many products and technologies mainly using ‘Pore Engineering’ approach. He participated in a major DST
project for the development of ceramic honeycombs for catalytic converters for automobile pollution control
which has been �ield-tested in various vehicles on Indian roads. He was actively involved with the Development
and Testing of Diesel Particulate Filter in KSRTC and BMTC buses in Bangalore, which were the �irst ever
demonstrations in India. Towards pollution control in power plants, his steered development of SCR catalyst for
NOx reduction and successful �ield testing in BTPS-KPCL Bellary and in NTPC-Simhadri power plants. Recently,
he is involved, jointly with IISc, in evaluating ceramic honeycombs for thermal storage in CSP applications.
Dr. Madhusoodana has published 43 papers in journals and over 50 presentations in conference of national and
international repute. He has contributed to 34 applications for patent, of which 15 have been granted. He is
closely associated with academics as a Member of many Boards of studies/examinations like VTU, DTE etc.
Under his guidance, 3 students have been awarded PhD and 30 students have received postgraduate degree, 4
students are working for it. He has given many invited lectures in an effort to popularize ‘Ceramic Technology’.
Dr. Madhusoodana is a Life Member of Indian Ceramics Society, Materials Research Society of India, Indian
Membrane Society and a Member of American Ceramic Society. He has served as Chairman of Indian Ceramic
Society, Karnataka Chapter (2014-16). He is a Fellow and presently Vice President of Indian Institute of
Ceramics. He has been awarded Fellowships from UNIDO, UNESCO, JSPS and Humboldt. He is a recipient of many
awards - Pavan Nagpal Memorial Award by Indian Ceramic Society, Bangalore Chapter (2012) and GN Agarwal
Award from Indian Ceramic Society, Kolkata (2013) for Life Time Achievements in Ceramics, Best Paper Award
from Transactions of Indian Ceramic Society (2017-18).

Engineering Sciences
Prof. Pramod Kumar, born in 1975 in Bengaluru, obtained BE (Mech, 1997)
from Goa University, MSc (Engg) (Mech, 2001) and PhD (Mech, 2008) from
Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. For his PhD, he developed an
innovative electromagnetic stirring system apparatus for liquid aluminium, as
a part of thixo-casting process for producing aluminium billets with semisolid microstructure. Through this
work, he demonstrated, for the �irst time in India, semisolid manufacturing of automobile components, a
technology which was subsequently adopted by leading automobile industries in India. As a major recognition,
he was awarded the Prof. B. K. Subba Rao Gold Medal (2008) for his PhD thesis. He worked as a Postdoctoral
Fellow at Georgia Institute of Technology, USA (2008-11). He joined IISc, in 2011, as Assistant Professor in
Department of Mechanical Engineering. Currently, since 2017, he is serving as Associate Professor and is
engaged in teaching and fundamental and applied research.
Prof. Pramod Kumar has had an outstanding research career. He has developed India’s �irst supercritical carbon
dioxide based Brayton cycle test loop, which will also be its �irst demonstration worldwide, for solar power. In
addition, he indigenously developed, in collaboration with Triveni Turbines, BHEL and ISRO, critical
components and systems, such as supercritical CO2 turbo-generator, high-pressure-high-temperature compact
heat exchangers, PCM coupled heat pipe for spacecraft thermal control, high performance adsorbers for silica-
gel-water-based solar cooling systems.
Prof. Pramod Kumar has published 29 papers in journals and 64 papers in conference proceedings of national
and international repute. He has authored a book and has contributed for a book chapter. Under his guidance, 2
students have been awarded PhD, 8 students are working for it and 5 students have received MTech/MS-Engg.
degree. He has �iled over 10 patent applications for his innovations and 6 patents have been granted. As a major
testimony of successful technology development, supercritical CO2 technology is now being considered for on-
board naval power generation and refrigeration.
Prof. Pramod Kumar is a Life Member of Indian Society of Heat and Mass Transfer and Member of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is a recipient of many awards - Lowest Thermal Resistance Award (2012) (in
collaboration with Prof. Yogendra Joshi, Georgia Tech), Most Innovative Design Award (2014) and Most
Multidisciplinary Approach Award (2015) - all these awards from Defense Advanced Research Project Agency,
Of�ice of Naval Research, USA, Academics Category Achievement Award, National Instruments Graphical System
Design (2013), DST, Government of India.

DR. AMITABH SARAF
Engineering Sciences
Dr. Amitabh Saraf, born in 1969 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, obtained B.
Tech. (Mech, 1990) and M. Tech. (Systems and Control Engg, 1992) from IIT-
Bombay, and PhD (Aerospace, 2000) from Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore. He worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in University of California,
Irvine, USA (2001-03). He has worked as a scientist, at Centre for Arti�icial Intelligence and Robotics, DRDO,
Bangalore (1992-2003). In 2003, he moved to Aeronautical Development Agency, Bangalore, as a Senior
Engineer. Since 2017, he is serving as Outstanding Scientist and Associate Technology Director (Integrated Flight
Control Systems). His speci�ic are of work is the design of �light control systems and related technologies for
�ighter aircraft. He is a senior member of the National Control Law Team for the Indian Light Combat Aircraft.
Dr. Saraf has made outstanding contributions in development of �light control laws and associated technologies
for Indian LCA. He has worked on design, implementation, software-hardware testing, and �light testing of
control laws and air data system algorithms. He is the chief designer of control laws for LCA Navy, and has
designed the special control law modes for ski jump, precision landing and bolter modes for operating the
aircraft from carriers. He has expertise in high AOA and post stall �light dynamics for modern aircraft. He has also
contributed signi�icantly to the activity of parameter identi�ication of LCA aerodynamic characteristics using
�light data.
Dr. Saraf has published 5 research papers in journals and 26 papers in conference proceedings of national and
international repute. Under his guidance, 2 students are pursuing PhD. He has contributed for 2 book chapters.
He has translated 5 books and a large number of articles on spirituality and personality re�inement.
Dr. Saraf is a Member of Aeronautical Society of India. He is a recipient of several awards - DRDO National Science
Day Award (2001), Sabita Chaudary Medal and P. S. Narayana Medal for Best PhD thesis (Aerospace and
Mechanical Sciences), IISc, (2001), Technology Shield, NAL (2001), Baghai Young Scientist of the Year (2007),
Rotary Club - Bangalore South (2007), Swarnajayanti Award, Aeronautical Society of India (2008), Agni Award
for Excellence in Self Reliance instituted by DRDO twice (2012 & 2015).

Science and Technology
Prof. Gayathri Devaraja born in 1973, Udupi, has obtained M.Sc.
(Microbiology, 1996) from Kuvempu University and Ph.D. from Mangalore
University (2004). Dr. Gayathri has started her career as Lecturer at
Mangalore University College and senior scale (1997-2006), later in Kuvempu
University as Reader and Associate Professor (2006-2012). Since 2012, serving as Professor at Davangere
University. Dr. Gayathri has worked at various capacities as chairperson, syndicate and academic council
member, Director and Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, Davangere University.
Prof. Gayathri Devaraja is one of the very dynamic researchers and talented teachers. During her doctoral work
in Biotechnology unit, College of Fisheries, Mangalore, she developed monoclonal antibodies against
Aphanomyces invadans, for epizootic ulcerative syndrome in �ish for the �irst time in the world, which received
global recognition. Further, diagnostic kit developed during the study was fast, speci�ic, sensitive, cost effective,
simple enough to be used by the farmer at �ield level. Later Dr. Gayathri worked on indigenous probiotics
controlling colorectal cancer, gluten reduced food development for CD patients, a�latoxin detoxi�ication. Her
interest was also on bioremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls, much unexplored lichen associated bacterial
productivity in terms of PGPP. Now, at the Department of Microbiology, Davangere University, she has developed
unique center for probiotic research with the funding support of UGC, DBT, DAE-BRNS, VGST-RFTT and others.
Prof. Gayathri Devaraja has published 42 research papers in National and International peer reviewed journals.
One of her papers in Mental Health and Prevention Journal (Elsevier) was reported to be the most reviewed
article for more than a year. She has presented nearly 40 research papers at conferences, authored book
Chapters, Popular articles and other publications to her credit. Under her guidance, six students have been
awarded Ph.D. and 3 are pursuing. Dr. Gayathri Devaraja is an International and National Member of American
society of Microbiology, Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology, AMI, Indian Science Congress and
others. She is a recipient of Best paper award (AMI-2003), Overseas fellowship and Best participant award
(International vaccine Institute, Seoul, South Korea), Best project of the year awards (2013 and 2018, KSCST).
