Learning objectives:

ExplanationDesktops and Laptops

A desktop PC allows the user to carry out many different activities such as document creation, manipulating databases, gaming, design and communication. It usually has peripherals attached such as a keyboard and mouse.

A laptop has a smaller form factor than a desktop which allows users to carry them around from place to place, though they are restricted by smaller screen sizes and less powerful components.

Learning objectives:

ExplanationTablets and Hybrids

Tablet computers are controlled using a touch screen using either your fingers or a stylus. Some functions are quicker to perform on a tablet compared to a PC, digital artists use tablets with a stylus to produce their art.

A hybrid would be a tablet that can also dock with a keyboard so that it can have the functionality of a laptop as well.

Learning objectives:

ExplanationSmartphones

Smartphones have an even smaller form factor than tablets, though they have all the features tablets do in addition to making phone calls and texts.

One disadvantage to using a smartphone is the lack ofspacial awareness you may have when using them, if you were to get injured while using them on the move.

Exam question.

A employee of the government uses their smartphone for communications to other colleagues.

Describe one drawback for the government employee using their smartphone for this purpose.

Learning objectives:

Explanation Embedded Systems and Internet of Things

Embedded systems are computer systems that have a specific function within a larger system.

One example of this is a car’s GPS which has the specific function of navigation within the larger system of a car.

The Internet of Things (IoT) describes a network of objects connected to the Internet. This can include appliances like fridges and microwaves but also tracking systems used for parcels and freight.

Learning objectives:

Explanation Mainframes and Quantum Computers

A Mainframe is a massive machine used to solve complex scientific and mathematical problems. They are very secure because data is backed up regularly and if any components fail, there are backup components that will start working instead.Mainframes are only found within largeorganisations that process large amounts of data, or universities conducting research.

A Quantum Computer is an experimental computer that works with quantum bits that aren’t limited to 1s and 0s like traditional computers. A fully working Quantum Computer would be millions of times more powerful than a mainframe.
