Dear Quilting Friends,

It’s been a good month. Things appear to be moving forward as far as

finalizing all the programs for this year. We are also beginning to utilize our

website/blog more since Cassie Schwarz has revamped it. You saw that instead

of having the newsletter delivered to your email, you used the link to our website

to find it. This way we can include so much more information to keep you

abreast of all that is happening in our guild.

We are also moving along with our involvement in the KC Regional

Quilt Festival. Jackie Rudolph and I met with some of the organizers to snap

pictures of a few of our quilts* draped over the sculptures at the Pioneer

Crossing on the border of Shawnee. At some point these will appear on the

KCRQF website. Be sure to check out the info on our portion of the web page.

In 2017 our guild will have two responsibilities: to provide treats and

man the volunteer room for those working the show and along with the Blue

Valley guild, staff the registration desk. We will also need someone to organize

the collection and distribution of the quilts that we will be displaying. Those

jobs translate into plenty of volunteer opportunities with a relatively short

duration. The festival will be expanding in size in relation to the last one, not

only with vendors, but also with quilts. Be sure to consider creating a quilt for

the entrance of the KCRQF – the winner gets vendor cash! Sandy

The Fractured Fabric Society (FFS) is a group of non-traditional quilters who are working in

their home studios on original designs. They meet twice a semester to share resources, projects

and ideas in an encouraging environment. Show and Tell is a major part of the gathering with

time for suggestions and opinions. CHECK THE HARPERS CLASS SCHEDULE FOR

DETAILS ON MEETING TIMES. Usually there are 15-20 at the meeting. The group was

formed 12 years ago. Since that time, they have had an exhibit at Lenexa City Hall every other

year. Their current exhibit started on March 1st and will end on Monday, March 28th.

The guild librarians have gone dotty! In an attempt to make books easier to find on our cramped bookshelves, we’ve added dots: Applique – green; Children’s – yellow; Embellishment – purple; Modern Quilts – bright pink; Paper/Foundation piecing – red; Patchwork – turquoise; Precuts-blue; Quick Quilts – Orange; and Technique – Brown. So as you are browsing our shelves trying to find modern quilts – just look for bright pink dots. We also have printed out book lists in a white notebook on the table – By Subject or By Author or By Title AND we have Large print lists of the more popular topics. We hope you’ll stop by the library table. We’d love to help you find exactly what you want.

Our March 22nd

program will be about

the Fractured Fabric

Society led by Rosemary Cromer

along with other

members of the society.

Rosemary is an extraordinary

quilter. Her "Jewels of the Plaza" pattern was featured

in KC Star, March 2003. She

earned her BS & MS in

Family and Consumer Science Education. Her love

of teaching is obvious given

that she was a Shawnee Mission Educator for 20

years and an Adult Education

Teacher with J C Community

College for 10 years.

This year’s community project is making small utility aprons for people in nursing homes. The apron should not be too big and have pockets on the front so the patient can carry small items (tissues, mints, etc.).The internet has multiple free patterns for inspiration. You may want to modify a pattern making the ties long enough they can wrap all the way back and to the front for easy of tying. Perhaps you may modify a pattern using Velcro to “tie” the apron. Please consider the person may be rather fragile having limitations of having anything to heavy or big to wear for any length of time. All utility aprons will be donated to Johnson County Christmas Bureau to support residents in our region lacking family residing in a nursing home. Nursing Home Apron Directions

Apron Body: Cut heavy fabric 16” wide and 10” long

Pocket: Cut fabric 16” wide and 7” tall.

Straps: Cut 30” length by 2” wide.

Serge: length of Straps: and top of pocket: place pocket on lower half of apron; Straps at the top ( be sure to place straps toward front and serge side down). Then serge around all edges to fasten pocket and straps to the apron. Sew: middle of pocket with straight stitch to make to pockets. UFO Challenge Our UFO Challenge seems to be off to a successful start! Many people have told me that it gave them a reason to

look into their closets and drawers and drag out something that had been hanging around for months or … years.

Remember that this is very flexible. If you don’t get to something that you have written down for an early month,

move it to a later month. The goal is not to fill up every month necessarily, but to COMPLETE items. Thus, when

you are showing something, the item must be complete – quilted, binding on, etc. Looking forward to seeing your

long lost treasures. Sandy Fey

LADY OF THE WHITE HOUSE BLOCK 2

Lady of the Whitehouse

The First Lady of the United States is an unofficial

title and position traditionally held by the wife of the President during his term in office. Various

resources differ on the first use of the term “first

lady” but the majority state that Dolley Madison was the first to be called First Lady of the Nation,

albeit during a eulogy given by President Zachary

Taylor at her funeral. The term gained national

recognition in 1877 when Lucy Webb Hayes was referred to in a report of the inauguration of her

husband. While the position is unofficial and carries

no official duties, the role has evolved over the years and many First Ladies have attained great status in

their role. The First Lady is, first and foremost, the

hostess of the White House. She organizes and attends official ceremonies and functions of state

either along with, or in place of, the President.

Perhaps the 2016 election will bring a whole

different meaning to the term “First Lady.”

LET’S SEW 1. Sew (9) 1 ½” squares together to make a 9-patch block (3 rows of 3 squares). Make 4.

2. Draw a line on the back of the (2) 3 7/8” light squares.

3. Lay a 3 7/8” light square on a 3 7/8” medium square,

right sides together.

4. Sew a scant ¼” on each side of the drawn line.

5. Cut apart on the drawn line. Open and press the seam toward the darker fabric.

It’s Time to Assemble the Block 1. Make the four rows by sewing the blocks together as shown.

2. Sew the rows together to complete the block.

The Bucket Brigade Babes are working hard to match the huge success we had last month! How fun it was and what great raffle prizes....all donated by our fantastic guild members. This month will be just as great with so many wonderful items. One in particular will take care of anyone that has an iron deficiency (hint, hint). So bring your dollars and good luck. Remember 5 will buy you 6 but if you shop early it will buy you even more. Remember, we are also collecting fabric for our "Fun Fabric Frenzy" sale in August (that goes toward a National Speaker). Anyone donating will be on a list for early entrance into the sale. It just doesn't get any better! Thank you all for all that you do. The success is due to your generosity!

We have donated 132 Project Linus blankets for 2016 in just the first two months. Doesn’t it make you feel

good! We shouldn’t have any problem making 525 by the end of this year.

Starlight Project Linus blanket suggestions:

The minimum size is 36" x 36". Kits available at meetings for the smaller sizes have included fabric to

enlarge the tops.

The largest Project Linus blanket should be about 40 by 60. This size works well for toddler through high

schoolers.

Please PRESS your seams. These kids deserve your very best work.

Simple fleece blankets should be personalized in some way. It should be hand-fringed, crocheted or have a

another embellishment. If it’s plain fleece, please add something in addition to fringe to make it

personalized. Fabric patches or strips sewn to the fleece make plain fleece much more interesting.

Remember to make all fleece blankets a single layer. Double fleece blankets are not accepted because they

are too warm for our area.

When knotting the fringe on the fleece blanket, go easy. If the knots are too tight, the blanket turns into a

hammock. This needs to be fixed, if it can, and will take additional time to get to a child in need.

When using fleece or flannel for a back, leave out the batting. It’ll be too warm for our area.

To pillowcase: Lay batting down. Lay backing fabric, right side up, on top of batting. Lay quilt top, right side

down, on top of backing fabric. Using a 1/2" seam, sew all around the edges, leaving a 6"-8" opening to turn the

quilt. (Make sure batting in on the inside.) Trim corners diagonally, just short of the stitch line. Turn quilt. Press,

stitch opening shut. Stitch 1/2" around the edge of the quilt. At this point, hand quilt, tie or machine quilt.

You may hand quilt, tie or machine quilt the quilts.

Whether you machine quilt, hand quilt or tie, please do not leave any area larger than 8" by 8" un-quilted.

This will need to be fixed and will take longer to get to the child in need.

Please use cotton embroidery thread to hand-tie quilts. Cut the ends to approximately one inch long.

REMEMBER to bring those Best Choice UPC (barcode) labels from Price Chopper. The labels help pay for the Project Linus

labels that are affixed to every blanket donated to the children.

Thank you! Lea Robrahn

2016 Starlight Quilt Guild Challenge - Margaret Welch

By now many of you have picked your page number and your magazine page for the challenge. Remember you

must keep that page safe-you will need it when your quilt is presented to the guild. I will bring the bag of remaining page numbers and several different types of magazines (none quilt related) to the March guild meeting

for anyone who did not get to participate at the February meeting. The challenge is to make a quilt that is related

to something on that page-it could be color related, based on a word or phrase on the page, based on a pictures on the page, etc. Let your creativity go!!!

Rules:

1. You may piece, hand or machine appliqué your quilt. It may be a traditional or art quilt-it is your choice. 2. Quilt must be completely finished with quilting and binding.

3. It can be long and narrow, square, oval, round- your choice. It cannot be larger than 25 inches in any one

direction.

4. Completion date is for the September, 2016 guild meeting. 5. Pin your page from the magazine and also a short write up of how it is related to the quilt you made.

6. Viewer’s choice judging will determine the winners. There will be a 1st, 2

nd, and 3

‘COLOR PLAY’ QUILT SHOW

It's coming. You might be thinking it's a long way off, but for those of us putting our fall quilt show together it's just around the corner. Get out those patterns and sewing machine and get busy making something spectacular. Our

boutique chairs will be putting together some special requests. We are still looking for someone with extra special skills

in social media as that's the way we want to do the majority of our advertising. Also, we will be having a bed turning. We would like to find someone to take care of that event. If you are interested, please contract Kim Cawthon or Janette

Sheldon

Bed Turning demonstrations are showing up at quilt shows around the country. It is a unique way of telling the stories and history of quilts in a cozy kind of way. Quilts have a long history of not only being used for warmth, but are also considered a form of art. They are a pictorial history of the lives and experiences as told from the Quilter themselves. In the distant past the Quilter would use a Bed Turning as a social event. Some tell the story that a lady would invite several guests over and serve sweet tea and cookies, then show off the quilts she had made by layering several of them on a bed. Today, Bed Turnings can be seen at quilting events in themed groupings, or chronologically to appreciative audiences who are intrigued with the stories the quilts can tell.
