There may be a reprieve in holiday cele-brations at the moment, but Asbury Park’s annual Beerfest brings a wave of energy and excitement to the boardwalk this month. Asbury Park Boardwalk and the WRAT radio station present the tenth annual Asbury Park Beerfest 2020 - “Cheers to Beers” on Saturday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 26, at the iconic Convention Hall, 1300 Ocean Ave.
BRING ON THE NEW YEAR WITH BEERFEST 2020
Just like years past, this year’s Beerfest, which is held annually the weekend before the Super Bowl, will be broken down into three sessions over the course of the two-day event: two Saturday sessions and one Sunday session.
James Douglas, co-manager of the Asbury
BRING ON THE BREWS AT
ASBURY PARK BEERFEST 2020BY SAMANTHA MATTHEWS
Park Beerfest, shared with Night & Day magazine what he is most looking forward to at this year’s event. “The energy the event brings to the build-ing, boardwalk and the surrounding community,” he said. “It truly is great to see all the visitors Beerfest brings to Asbury Park in the middle of winter!”
Since Beerfest’s inception in 2011, organizers and presenters have worked hard each year to grow the event and ensure new additions are added and fan favorites over the years continue to make their comeback for another year.
“We have expanded our food selections and added more local NJ breweries,” shared Douglas. “Of course, all the national favorites will make their return.”
Beerfest 2020-goers can also look forward

to new beers added to the lineup this year. “Since Beerfest is truly about beer, adding new breweries with their specialties is always something we strive for,” he said.
With the growing popularity of Asbury Park Beerfest it comes as no surprise that sessions continue to sell out earlier and earlier each year. The 2019 Beerfest was the fastest the Saturday sessions had sold out and 2020 seems to be following suit with both Saturday sessions selling out quickly.
“It’s great to see the event grow in popularity with each year,” he added. “The level of anticipation just sur-rounding the announced date is truly amazing!
“It has become an annual event for so many.”
BREWERIES MAKING THEIR DEBUT AND RETURN
Douglas shared Best Beer winner Icarus Brewing will be one of the breweries making a return to Beerfest as well as local favorites like Asbury Park Brewery. New additions Source Brewing and Dogfish Head Brewing will also be showcasing their products for Beerfest 2020.
“There will be ciders again and the returning old-style beers, but not bars,” he explained. “This year there will be a NJ Beer Bar.” The Beer Muscle Competi-tion will return again this year, according to Douglas.
While beer is at the forefront of this event, there are plenty of food vendors for guests to look forward to that will pair perfectly with their favorite brew. This year’s food vendors are MOGO Tacos, Windmill, Simply Southern, Waffle Cabin, El Lechon de Negron, The An-chor’s Bend, Asbury Oyster Bar and Chank’s Grab-N-Go Pizza.
And, of course, the event will showcase various entertainment in Convention Hall as well. “We always have DJ’s, WRAT Contests and Giveaways and the popu-lar Ocean Avenue Stompers,” said Douglas.
MORE TO ASBURY PARK BEERFEST 2020
The Asbury Park Beerfest is proud to support Best Day Foundation, Clean Ocean Action and Officer Down NJ charities. Hops for Awareness is another that was added to this year’s list of charities. Hops for Aware-ness is “brewing” awareness and support to improve
the lives of individuals with special needs. “We hope to accomplish our goals by
coming together to celebrate while raising funds,” said Douglas about Beerfest's sup-port of these charities. “The funds raised will be utilized to support programs in our local communities both directly and indirectly.”
“We are also very proud, our very own Asbury Park Police and Fire departments are also part of Beerfest every year.”
CHEERS TO BEERS Make sure to mark your calendars for
Beerfest 2020 if you haven’t yet because the 10th annual event of its kind is sure to be a great time for all who attend. While Saturday sessions are sold out, Sunday tickets are still available with one session from noon to 4 p.m.
“Sunday is really a great day to enjoy the event, so if you did not get a ticket for Sat-urday absolutely grab one for Sunday,” ex-claimed Douglas. “While they last of course!”
Tickets can be purchased for $44 in ad-vance and $48 at the door plus applicable service charges and fees at ticketmaster.com and Stone Pony box office.
Beerfest attendees will receive a map when they enter the event, which will pro-vide any other additional information needed to make the most of their experience.
“All the great information is contained on the map each customer receives upon entry,” said Douglas. “It is a great way to navigate all that Beerfest has to offer, plus it will let everyone know how to vote for their favorite beer.”
Each year, Beerfest proves to be more than just an annual event, and is actually a celebration among friends and family that people look forward to year in and year out. Beerfest 2020 will be no exception to the rule.

BALADINA MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT & CAFE Baladina Mediterranean Restaurant & Cafe invites guests to enjoy a delicious variety of Mediterranean cuisine right at the Jersey Shore. Baladina’s inviting dining area is reflective of Middle Eastern culture leaving guests with a fulfilling and unique dining experience. The Middle Eastern Culture and Egyptian flare are not just represented in the food and atmosphere. On Friday and Saturday nights guests can enjoy belly dancing with a Mediterranean drummer. The menu boasts a wide variety of items to choose from, offering selections of appetizers, sandwiches, flatbread pizzas, salads and soups, as well as entrees. In a previous interview, Tamer El Fanagily, co-owner of Baladina, shared that everything is made in-house and the most popular platter is Ouzi. The entree is a special pie of phyllo-dough that is made up of rice, peas, carrots, raisins and flavored with almonds. The Kitchen @ 35: ‘An old Jersey tradition
with a new twist’
BY SAMANTHA MATTHEWS NIGHT & DAY MAGAZINE
When an opportunity to restore an old favorite arose, owners of A.M. Kitchen, Brendan Roberts and Lou Halkias. happily took it in stride and thus The Kitchen @ 35 brought new life to the 2601 Route 35 South, Manasquan, location and opened its doors to the community on Oct. 3 of this year.
NOSTALGIA AND OPPORTUNITY Two months later and Roberts shared that
it’s been wonderful so far. While Roberts’ pas-sion fueled the opening of the Kitchen @ 35, this project was not in the works for awhile.
“We were at the A.M. Kitchen in Spring Lake and this presented itself and I view the opportunity as a low risk with a high reward, so we decided to go for it and for nostalgic reasons I wanted to see this place restored to its former glory,” shared Roberts. “So that’s why we’re here.”
There is just something about a Jersey diner that people are drawn to and that. mixed with a location that Roberts once fre-quented and an opportunity for Roberts and Halkias to make it their own with their own spin, resulted in this new establishment.
“Yeah, so an o‘Old Jersey tradition’ with a new twist,”
said Roberts. “That’s the Kitchen @ 35.” For Roberts, the concept derived from
the popularity of Jersey diners that one finds among most people. “Well, everyone loves a Jersey diner,” he explained. “In fact, when I was in the Merchant Marine, when we used to work up at the docks, there was actually an old diner that they lifted up. I believe it was from Union, New Jersey, that they dis-connected at the base, they lifted it up, put it on a trailer and we actually shipped the entire diner overseas to Germany.”
“Everybody loves a diner, like I said, and we decided to put a new menu into a tradi-tional diner setting with a little bit of extra flair on our menu and the dinners especially.”
The Kitchen @ 35 serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. According to Roberts, instead of having a 70-page menu or the typical lengthy diner menu, they decided to condense the menu and make the items they do have on it very good. He added that people have been raving about the dinners.
“When my children were born, I have a 15 year old and a 12 year old,” said Roberts. “When my children were born, I was at this
location when it was The Atlantis Diner, every Saturday and Sunday with very good friends all the time and we all have had our children here in their car seats at one point or the other because this place used to be great.”
“And when I saw that it was available I really thought a. for business reasons, but b. for kind of nostalgic reasons, I want to see this place succeed again for the neighborhood and we’ve already seen families come in with their young ones,” added Roberts. “And I’m hoping to be able to provide a good place for them, a staple, a weekend staple, a Saturday and a Sunday staple, that they can come in at breakfast, lunch, dinner.”
“Actually what we’ve been seeing a lot is our dinner crowds is a lot of families. Kids are still in their cleats from the soccer field or they’re still in their high tops from the basketball court and they’re coming in, they’re having a nice, casual meal at a really affordable price and the food is excellent. And families really seem to be very appreciative of it.”
THE MENU: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The Kitchen @ 35 offers two menus; a break-
fast and lunch menu and then a lunch/dinner menu. No matter the time of day, breakfast is always on the menu at The Kitchen @ 35. “ … Breakfast is available all day because, just like the A.M. Kitchen, there’s nothing better than pancakes for dinner on a Friday.”
The breakfast menu features kitchen spe-cialty toasts like the Avocado Toast, which is toasted seven-grain topped with a fresh guaca-mole spread, sliced tomatoes, sliced avocado, EVOO and crushed red pepper flakes. Top off any toast with two eggs cooked to your liking. The breakfast menu also includes a variety of benedicts, breakfast bowls and breakfast sandwiches as well as chef choices, kitchen omelettes and from-the-griddle selections.
“Well, the children go bananas for everything from the griddle, the pancakes, the Volcano French Toast and also what we have included in our menu is a New York Style Deli Section for lunch and dinner,” said Roberts. Mile-high, fresh corned beef, pastrami, store-cooked turkey and we create all the Sloppy Joes, the Reubens, we have the White Russian and it’s just the combi-nation of all the fresh deli meats and the people are going crazy for it. The kids like it, too.”
Roberts didn’t hesitate when sharing his fa-vorite dish. “Corned beef hash, with three eggs over easy, rye toast and a little hot sauce is probably the best breakfast, I think,” he shared. The corned beef hash is homemade in house.
Indulge in a burger, which Roberts thinks is one of the best around. Interested in other can’t- miss menu items? “The pastrami for lunch is nice and lean, it’s delicious and for dinner our saute cook is a magician with a frying pan,” said Roberts. “People have been raving about his Veal Saltimbocca, the Shrimp Fra Diavolo, of course the Chicken Francese, the Chicken Marsala, Chicken Parm, the old
staples.”“It’s really, there’s not 75 choices
for dinner, the 15 choices are sold for dinner, but they’re prepared really well,” he added. “And the chicken dishes are wonderful and we have a nice steak on the menu. A Ribeye and a Delmonico and Pork Chops. So we have everything for everyone.”
Other dinner items include seafood, a section of the classics, pasta and saute specials. They also offer one or two dinner specials every weekend for another variance off the menu. “People have been really raving about the saute section and the pasta section,” he said. “We had a young lady in here the other day, she was 16 and she said it was the best Shrimp Scampi she’s ever had.”
The Kitchen @ 35 proudly serves Hoffman’s Ice Cream as well as all breads and desserts from Country Bakery. “The ice cream comes from Point Pleasant Beach,” said Roberts. “The bread comes from Point Pleasant Beach and our desserts … so everything is bought and helping local businesses.”
The restaurant also features fresh brewed, organically grown, ground-on-premises coffee and artisan teas. There’s four TVs for customers to catch their favorite games and the establish-ment is BYOB so don’t forget to bring your favorite bottle of wine or cold beer. In addition to dining in, The Kitchen @ 35 offers Doordash as well as pickup so customers can enjoy the menu for takeout as well. The establishment is also open for private events.
LOCAL LOVE The Kitchen @ 35 supports all local
causes and hosts fundraisers as well. The restaurant recently hosted a pasta party for a local sports team the night before a big game. “We hosted one here the other night and the kids loved it,” he said. “We piled out so much pasta and soda and ice cream and the parents didn’t have to worry about picking up or cleaning up and they all came back and they picked up their kids an hour later so don’t forget to host your next pasta party before the big game here.”
The Kitchen @ 35 keeps it local from staff to customers and distributors. Fol-low the restaurant on their webpage, Facebook and Instagram because they might be coming up with new, fun ideas, according to Roberts.
“We’re from the community and we want to give to the community and that’s what we’re here for,” shared Roberts.

LIGHT OF DAY WINTERFEST BRINGS AWARENESS AND MUSIC TO ASBURY PARK
BY SAMANTHA MATTHEWS NIGHT & DAY MAGAZINE
One night featuring a single con-cert to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease evolved over 20 years into a festival that spans 10 days in the tri-state area, an internationally recognized tour and shows that take place around the world in 13 countries on three continents.
Light of Day Winterfest 2020 celebrates its 20th anniversary in the city where it all began, Asbury Park, after jumping leaps and bounds from its beginning.
START OF LIGHT OF DAY “Well, I think that when we started
this we never had any idea that it would become what it has become, where we have shows, basically, I think we’re at 13 or 14 countries now,” shared Jean Mikle, president of the Light of Day Foundation Inc. in regard to this year’s 20th anniversary. “We actually have a Light of Day in Austra-lia, believe it or not, that an Australian group does. And I just came back from the three week tour that we do in Eu-rope every year where we bring some artists over there and we tour, it’s just a songwriter’s circle and we tour for three weeks.
“So it’s just kind of really amazing that it’s become this,” she added. “The sad part, on the other hand, is that we went into this hoping that we would find a cure for Parkinson’s in our life-time and help raise money for that and that has not happened. Although there have been a lot of advances which are encouraging.”
The Light of Day Foundation, Inc. was founded in 2000, a few years after music industry veteran Bob Benjamin had been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease. After celebrating
his 40th birthday party in Red Bank and asking friends to make donations to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in lieu of gifts, the generosity spurred the creation of the Light of Day charity.
The name was taken from a Bruce Springsteen song and the foundation utilizes the power of music to raise money and awareness in its continu-ing battle to defeat Parkinson’s disease, and related illnesses PSP and ALS, within our lifetime.
“Yeah, the first major Light of Day was actually in Asbury Park at The Stone Pony in 2000 and it was one day,” explained Mikle. “It was just one concert with Joe Grushecky and the Houserock-ers as the headliner and we were very lucky that Bruce Springsteen decided to show up and play that night.
“It was actually the first time he had come back to The Stone Pony since it had reopened in 2000.” This initial concert took place in November because that is when the birthday is of the movement's founder, Bob Benjamin, but they ended up moving the concerts to January to avoid competing with any other cause, according to Mikle.
Twenty years after that first official concert and even those that were there from the start didn’t dream of this. ”I don’t think Bob ever thought 20 years later we would be doing this and I don’t think any of us did,” she said. “I mean ... we were just a group of friends of Bob who kind of got together and this happened.”
THE ASBURY PARK LINEUP “But what’s cool about this event, I think, is
people come from all over the world and it’s really kind of fascinating,” shared Mikle. “We have peo-ple, a big group of people, that come from the UK every year with a group called Badlands that runs tours, rock ‘n’ roll tours, and we have a lot of people from Norway, people from Spain, Italy, Sweden and obviously people from the U.S. and lots of parts of the U.S. in addition to our local people.”
“ … And in addition to raising money to fight Parkinson’s, they just really love coming to Asbury Park in the middle of the winter,” she added with a laugh. ”And I think it speaks not just to, you
know, we have a bunch of artists who have been very dedicated to us over the years like Willie Nile, obviously Joe Grushecky has been there every year, Joe D’Urso and Stone Caravan, Joe’s on our board, he’s our vice president. Jesse Malin has been another longtime sup-porter, he’s going to be there. James Maddock, another one who’s been there for a while. So we have all these artists, but also I think this is kind of a celebration of the local music scene, too, because people get to see a lot of local artists play and they kind of fall in love with them.”
Head to The Stone Pony, the place where it all began, on Sunday, Jan. 12, for Cover Me: Best in NJ Cover & Trib-ute Bands with doors at 1 p.m. and the show at 1:30 p.m. Light of Day Winterfest concerts will continue to utilize music to illuminate Asbury Park from Thursday, Jan. 16 through Saturday, Jan. 25 with performances all over town. For a complete list of scheduled performances, performers and venues, visit lightofday.org.
While Mikle admits she doesn’t get to watch many of the shows because she’s running around working, she notes that some of the shows she is most looking forward to include the first night kickoff show at House of Independents as well as the three shows at the Para-mount Theatre and, of course, the Saturday night show.
“And then our big show of course would be Saturday night with all our artists like Jesse Malin and James Maddock and Joe Grushecky will be the headliner, so for the 20th anniversary as he was the first time, so it’s kind of like come full circle,” said Mikle. “And Joe D’Urso, Stone Caravan will be playing there so, yeah, it’s kind of going back to our roots, I guess.”
“And one of my very favorite shows is the last night, what we call the Last Note, which is at The Saint and that would be Sunday night after we’ve all hung out at McLoone’s, everybody goes and parties there,” she added. “I’m not sure yet who Scotty has playing there so I can’t tell you, but it’s always fun.”
20 YEARS OF LIGHT OF DAY “We’ve raised, I guess, about $5.5 million dollars
so far,” shared Mikle. “We’re hoping to go over $6 mil-lion this year. … In addition to giving money to various organizations, including, we give money to Joan Dancy and Pals, which is people with ALS, and also to cure PSP, which is another neuromuscular disease, and we give
money obviously to the Parkinson’s Foundation and to the Michael J. Fox organization, but we also fund, kind of our boots on the ground thing, is we pay for over 100 people a week to take boxing classes in our Boxing for Bob program. Boxing is really good for people with Parkinson’s because it helps with their balance and core strength.”
All of the money raised during Light of Day Winterfest will get distributed to those various organizations to con-tinue the foundation’s mission. “And ... our next move is we’re hoping to start a speech therapy program,” added Mikle. “Hopefully within the next year because that’s another thing … people with Parkinson’s have difficulty talking and it really kind of shuts them off from the world in a sense because they can’t communicate. So we’d like to do that. We’ve been working on that for a while so hopefully within the next year we’ll do that.”
While the Light of Day Foundation works hard all year to raise money and awareness by hosting other fundrais-ers and holding board meetings, the biggest events of the year for them are the Light of Day shows. It’s truly a pas-sion project as the grassroots organi-zation only has one salaried employee and everyone else works as a volunteer and has been for the past 20 years.
According to Mikle, all of this really comes down to Bob’s vision. After being diagnosed with early onset Par-kinson’s at the age of 38 and working as a music manager for Joe Grushecky and Joe D’Urso, he decided to do something instead of feeling sorry for himself.
“‘Let’s try to raise money and awareness for this disease’ and that’s really where this all comes from,” said Mikle, explaining what he decided to do. “Cause we were all friends with Bob and we just kind of joined into it, but he’s the inspiration. He’s 61 now. He’s had this disease for a very long time and he’s not doing as well as he was in the past, but he remains prob-ably the bravest person I know.”
